FSSC 22000 certification in Bahrain at a glance
In Bahrain, FSSC 22000 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
International retailers and importers are usually the reason a Bahraini food business looks at FSSC 22000. The scheme, owned by the Foundation FSSC, builds on ISO 22000, adds the ISO 22002 prerequisite programme series for the sector concerned, and layers on its own Scheme Requirements; certificates come from certification bodies licensed under it, listed on the Foundation's public register. In Bahrain the manufacturers and handlers most likely to need it work in the industrial and logistics zones that the Economic Development Board describes, such as the Bahrain International Investment Park and the Bahrain Logistics Zone. No Bahraini regulator was found that requires it, and no food-safety instrument was reviewed, so the competent food authority's rules remain a separate matter. The certification body should also hold accreditation for the scheme from an accredited body within the international arrangements. Sterling's Dubai office closes the gaps to the scheme and trains staff through Sterling Academy, with Effivity included.
Who needs FSSC 22000 in Bahrain, and what happens without it
In Bahrain the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Food manufacturers supplying international retailersRetail buyers can require a certified food safety scheme from suppliers.
- Food packaging manufacturersThe scheme has its own requirements for packaging manufacturers.
- Re-export and food logistics operatorsHandlers of food in the Bahrain Logistics Zone chain are drawn into customer audits.
- Caterers serving airlines and large contractsThe scheme draws on the ISO 22002 prerequisite series, including catering.

Strip away the vocabulary and FSSC 22000 asks a company to prove six things about food safety to the level global buyers expect.
In Bahrain these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: FSSC 22000 explained →

How long does FSSC 22000 certification take in Bahrain?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Bahrain these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Gap to the ISO 22000 elements, ISO 22002 prerequisites and scheme additions
- Food defence and food fraud assessments
- Number of lines and sites
- Certification body scheduling around Ramadan, the Eid holidays and Friday as the weekly day of rest
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does FSSC 22000 certification cost in Bahrain?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Bahrain these factors move both.
- Number of sites, lines and product categories
- Technical upgrades to prerequisites and monitoring
- Certification body fees quoted separately from consulting
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
FSSC 22000 consultants and certification bodies in Bahrain
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers FSSC 22000 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Bahrain are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Bahrain
FSSC 22000 certificates are issued by certification bodies licensed under the scheme; the Foundation FSSC keeps a public register of certification bodies and certified organisations, and the body should also hold accreditation for the scheme from an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements now run by Global ACI (Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated). No body is named here. Edition and transition details: FSSC 22000 hub →
Audit language
Arabic is the official language and English is the working language of most business; agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any Arabic-language requirement a regulator or customer sets.
Remote and on-site
Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; operational sites are normally visited on-site.
FSSC 22000 in Bahrain: questions clients ask
What is FSSC 22000 built on?
The Foundation FSSC describes the scheme as three layers: ISO 22000 as the management system base, the ISO 22002 series for sector-specific prerequisite programmes, and the FSSC 22000 Scheme Requirements that add consistency and integrity rules. A company with ISO 22000 therefore already has the first layer, and needs to close the rest.
Who issues an FSSC 22000 certificate in Bahrain?
A certification body licensed under the scheme issues it, not a regulator, and not Sterling. The Foundation FSSC keeps a public register of certification bodies and certified organisations, so check the body there and ask for the accreditation certificate that supports its work. Confirm the body's current standing before you sign.
Should a Bahraini food business choose FSSC 22000 or ISO 22000?
Ask the buyers you care about. FSSC 22000 adds scheme requirements on top of ISO 22000, and international retailers are the customers most likely to name it. If your buyers accept ISO 22000, it is the lighter route, and you can move to the scheme later if the customer base demands it.
Does FSSC 22000 replace local food authority inspections?
No. A scheme certificate is voluntary and separate from the requirements of the competent food authority, and no Bahraini food-safety rule was reviewed for this page. Continue to meet licensing and inspection obligations for your product, and ask the authority whether a certificate changes anything for your site.
