In short

HACCP certification in Bahrain at a glance

In Bahrain, HACCP is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

For kitchens, caterers and small producers in Bahrain, HACCP is the practical starting point for showing that food hazards are analysed and controlled. Government tenders do not require it as a rule, since Legislative Decree No. 36 of 2002 leaves criteria to each invitation, but hotels, contract catering customers and retail buyers can make documented hazard control a condition. The certificate is issued by a certification body, so the body's accreditation should cover HACCP-based certification, whether through the GCC Accreditation Centre, which serves Bahrain, or another body within the international arrangements. Producers and handlers in the Bahrain International Investment Park and the Bahrain Logistics Zone are typical users, and the competent food authority's own requirements stay in force whatever certificate is held. Sterling's Dubai office carries out the hazard analysis, sets critical limits and monitoring, and trains food handlers through Sterling Academy, with Effivity included in the engagement.

The need

Who needs HACCP in Bahrain, and what happens without it

In Bahrain the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Restaurants, hotels and central kitchensBuyers and guests look for evidence that hazards are analysed and controlled.
  • Contract caterersLarge contract customers set documented hazard control as a condition.
  • Small food producers and packersHACCP is a proportionate first system before a full management system.
  • Food handlers and storage operators in the logistics zoneCold and ambient storage need critical limits and monitoring records.

HACCP requirements in Bahrain

Strip away the vocabulary and HACCP asks a food business to prove six things about how it controls food safety hazards.

A team knows the product and processA competent team has described each product, its intended use and a verified flow diagram of how it is made.
Hazards are analysedEvery significant hazard at each step is identified, and the measures that will control it are decided.
Critical control points have limitsThe steps where control is essential are identified, each with critical limits that separate safe from unsafe.
Monitoring and correction are routineEach critical point is monitored, and corrective action is defined in advance and taken whenever a limit is breached.
The plan is verifiedChecks confirm the plan works, from validating limits to reviewing records and reassessing when anything changes.
Records prove itDocuments and records show the plan was followed, ready for customers, auditors and food inspectors.

In Bahrain these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: HACCP explained →

Time

How long does HACCP certification take in Bahrain?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Bahrain these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Hazard analysis for each product and process
  • Prerequisite programme and monitoring records
  • Number of outlets, kitchens or lines
  • Certification body scheduling around Ramadan, the Eid holidays and Friday as the weekly day of rest

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does HACCP certification cost in Bahrain?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Bahrain these factors move both.

  • Number of sites and product range
  • Monitoring equipment and staff training
  • Certification body fees quoted separately from consulting

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

HACCP consultants and certification bodies in Bahrain

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers HACCP and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Bahrain are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive HACCP in Bahrain (3)

    InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Legislative Decree No. (36) of 2002 with respect to Regulating Government Tenders, Bids, Procurements and Sales (as amended)Market driver
The text checked sets no HACCP certificate requirement; each tender sets its own criteria.
Bahrain Economic Development Board — industrial and logistics zones (Bahrain International Investment Park, Bahrain Logistics Zone, Salman Industrial City)Market driver
Food producers and handlers in industrial and logistics zones serve buyers that ask for documented hazard control.
GCC Accreditation Centre (GAC) — recorded accreditation and mutual recognition scopesAccreditation
GAC's recorded scopes were reviewed; confirm that a certification body's scope covers HACCP-based certification.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Bahrain

Choose a certification body whose accreditation covers HACCP-based food safety certification, with accreditation from the GCC Accreditation Centre (GAC), which serves Bahrain, or another body within the international mutual recognition arrangements now run by Global ACI (Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated). The certificate is issued by the certification body and does not replace the competent food authority's requirements. No body is named here. Edition and transition details: HACCP hub →

    Audit language

Arabic is the official language and English is the working language of most business; agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any Arabic-language requirement a regulator or customer sets.

    Remote and on-site

Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; operational sites are normally visited on-site.

HACCP in Bahrain: questions clients ask

What does a HACCP certificate show a buyer in Bahrain?

It shows that a certification body has audited your hazard analysis, critical control points, limits and monitoring records and found them working. For a hotel group or caterer, that is evidence a buyer can check. It does not stand in for the competent food authority's own inspections or licences.

Is a HACCP certificate required to supply the Bahraini government?

Not under the tenders decree, whose English text sets no certificate requirement of this kind. Each tender's documents define what bidders must hold, and a food supply invitation may well ask for documented hazard control. Check the eligibility section of the specific invitation and ask the issuing body about acceptable evidence.

Who decides which certification body is acceptable for HACCP?

Your customer or tender often decides, and the sensible baseline is a body whose accreditation covers HACCP-based food safety certification. Ask the buyer which bodies it accepts, then ask the body for its accreditation certificate and scope, and compare that with the accreditation body's own record.

Can a small Bahraini kitchen start with HACCP before moving to ISO 22000?

Yes. HACCP gives a small kitchen or packer a proportionate system built on hazard analysis, critical limits and records. If customers later ask for more, the same hazard analysis feeds an ISO 22000 system, so the early work is not wasted. Build the prerequisite programmes properly the first time.
