2026 migration
ISO 14001:2015 to ISO 14001:2026: the key changes: video
A two-minute film on moving an environmental management system from ISO 14001:2015 to ISO 14001:2026: what changes and how to plan the transition audit.
Key takeaways
- ISO 14001:2026 was published on 15 April 2026.
- ISO 14001:2015 certificates must move to the new edition by 30 April 2029.
- The environmental context now explicitly covers climate, biodiversity, pollution and resources.
- A new clause 6.3 covers the planning of changes.
- A life-cycle perspective is required, but not a formal life-cycle assessment.
What ISO 14001:2026 changes
Published on 15 April 2026, ISO 14001:2026 replaces ISO 14001:2015 together with its 2024 amendment on climate action. Certified organisations have until 30 April 2029 to move across; after that date 2015-edition certificates lapse. The transition can be assessed at a surveillance audit, at recertification or in a separate transition audit, on the timetable your certification body confirms. This short film runs through what is new and what an environmental manager should plan.
The changes include a broader environmental context covering climate, biodiversity, ecosystem health, pollution and resource availability; a new clause 6.3 on planning changes; clearer determination of environmental risks and opportunities; wider wording on external providers in clause 8.1; stronger emphasis on leadership and measurable results; and clearer emphasis on audit programmes and management review. The life-cycle perspective guides what you control or influence, but it does not require a formal life-cycle assessment.
Moving the EMS without starting again
Environmental teams usually start by fixing three things: which edition and certificate cycle they are in, the audit that will carry the transition, and whether sites or scope are changing at the same time. The gap analysis that follows compares today's environmental management system with each revised requirement, keeps whatever already satisfies the new text and lists the rest; in most systems the action list touches the context analysis, aspects and environmental risks, the planning of changes and the controls passed to external providers.
Most of the system stays as it is. Environmental leads, site managers and internal auditors learn the new requirements, registers and procedures are amended, and an internal audit with a pre-assessment shows whether the EMS is ready before the certification body's transition audit, which should be booked well before demand peaks near 2029. The decision on the transitioned certificate is the certification body's.
Under Revise™, part of Sterling OS™, Sterling's transition service covers each of these steps through to support at the final audit, with Effivity and Sterling Academy access included. Organisations implementing ISO 14001 for the first time build to the 2026 edition from the start.

ISO 14001: questions people ask
Is ISO 14001 certification mandatory?
No law makes ISO 14001 compulsory. Customers, main contractors, tenders and some regulators make it a condition of doing business, and many organisations implement it with no external demand at all, because it is the most reliable way to keep a site inside its permits and bring waste, energy and water costs down.
Does ISO 14001 require full legal compliance?
The standard requires a policy commitment to meet your compliance obligations, a process to identify them and a periodic evaluation of whether you meet them, with action where you do not. The certificate is not a permit and does not replace one; it is evidence that compliance is managed. An auditor who finds an unmanaged, continuing breach will raise it.
Can an office-based or service business implement ISO 14001?
Yes. Energy, water, waste, business travel, purchasing and the environmental behaviour of suppliers are all aspects an office can control or influence. The system is scaled to them; it does not need a factory's monitoring regime.
Does Sterling issue the ISO 14001 certificate?
No. Sterling provides consulting, training and software. The audit and the certification decision belong to an independent, accredited certification body. Anyone offering to do both at once is selling paper.
Can we integrate ISO 14001 with ISO 45001 and ISO 9001?
Yes, and most do. The three standards share the harmonised structure, so one context, one set of roles, one document control, one internal audit programme and one management review can serve a QHSE system, while the environmental requirements, such as aspects, compliance obligations and emergency preparedness, are still addressed in full. Certification bodies commonly audit an integrated system in one visit.
