ISO 14006 · Guidelines for incorporating ecodesign

ISO 14006 ecodesign implementation for products designed with their whole life in view.

ISO 14006 shows how to manage ecodesign inside an environmental management system, so a product's environmental impact is weighed while it is still being designed. It is guidance and carries no certificate. Sterling's expert and experienced consultants build ecodesign into your design process and your EMS with your own teams, in 60+ countries. We help our clients put it into practice and prove it.

  • Fixed scope, one proposal: consulting, Effivity software, Sterling Academy access and internal auditor training, as applicable to your standard, in one proposal

What it is

What is ISO 14006 and what is it used for?

ISO 14006 is the ISO guidance for bringing ecodesign into an environmental management system. The standard treats ecodesign as a systematic way of considering environmental aspects during design and development, with the aim of reducing adverse impacts across the life cycle: from acquiring materials, through manufacture, delivery and use, to end-of-life treatment and disposal. It covers aspects an organisation controls and those it can only influence, and sets no environmental performance criteria of its own.

The practical reason to use it: ISO 14001 expects life cycle thinking when environmental aspects are determined, yet the people choosing materials, energy use and packaging rarely see the aspects register. ISO 14006 brings those questions into the design brief and the design review, with management backing.

Current edition. ISO 14006:2020, the second edition, was published in January 2020 and replaced the 2011 edition. ISO reviewed and confirmed it in 2025, and iso.org shows no revision in progress. The 2020 edition follows the structure of ISO 14001:2015, while ISO 14001 itself is now in its 2026 edition, published on 15 April 2026. ISO 14001 certification and the 2026 edition

Who it is for

Who needs ISO 14006?

ISO 14006 suits any organisation that decides what its products are made of, how they perform or how they end their life. It is written for ISO 14001 users but works alongside other management systems. Organisations come to Sterling from four starting points:

  • Customers ask how you reduce the footprint of what you sell. Supplier questionnaires ask how environmental impact is weighed in product development. A managed process answers consistently, backed by design records.
  • A tender scores environmental design. Some tenders award points for lowering the environmental impact of the product offered. ISO 14006 gives that evidence a recognised structure, though no certificate can be supplied.
  • Product-related legal requirements are tightening in your markets. Ecodesign carries rules on materials, energy, packaging or end of life into the design brief, not a late compliance check.
  • A parent company sets a sustainability strategy. Group targets on materials, carbon or circularity need a mechanism at every design desk. ISO 14006 links the strategy to design reviews each site can run.

With nothing to certify, the proof sits in the products and the records of how they were designed.

Guidelines

What do the ISO 14006 guidelines cover?

ISO 14006 is guidance rather than a set of requirements. It follows the ISO 14001:2015 clause structure, clauses 4 to 10, adds a Clause 11 on ecodesign activities in design and development, and closes with four informative annexes. The list maps it at title level.

  • Clause 4 Context of the organisation: the organisation and its context, the needs of interested parties, the scope of the EMS and the system itself.
  • Clause 5 Leadership: commitment from top management, including the benefits and strategic aspects of ecodesign; environmental and ecodesign policies; roles and authorities.
  • Clause 6 Planning: risks and opportunities, environmental aspects, legal and other requirements, planning action, and environmental objectives with plans to achieve them.
  • Clause 7 Support: resources, competence, awareness, communication and documented information.
  • Clause 8 Operation: operational planning and control, including integrating ecodesign into design and development, plus emergency preparedness and response.
  • Clause 9 Performance evaluation: monitoring, measurement, analysis and evaluation, evaluation of compliance, internal audit and management review.
  • Clause 10 Improvement: nonconformity and corrective action, and continual improvement.
  • Clause 11 Ecodesign activities in design and development: how design and development works, how to get started with ecodesign and how to plan its incorporation into the design process.
  • Annexes A to D (informative): top management and strategic issues, correlation with other ecodesign standards, ecodesign within design and development, and clarification of concepts.

What does useful ecodesign evidence look like?

An ecodesign policy adopted by top management, aspects assessed with a life cycle view, design briefs carrying environmental objectives, design reviews recording the options considered and why one was chosen, supplier materials data, and each new design compared with the one it replaces. We keep only the records your design process genuinely produces, in Effivity.

Implementation

How do you implement ISO 14006?

With no certificate at the end, the route is implementation and demonstration: ecodesign built into how products are designed, then shown through records, internal audit and management review. Where you hold ISO 14001 certification, the same evidence supports your EMS at surveillance; that decision stays with the certification body.

  1. 01
Agree the products, teams and ambition.Choose the product families, design teams and sites in scope, and what customers or the group expect ecodesign to show.
  2. 02
Gap analysis: compare your EMS and design process with the guidance.Review how aspects, policy and design reviews work today, keep what works and set actions, owners and dates.
  3. 03
Set the policy, the plan and the design checkpoints.Top management adopts an ecodesign policy and objectives; the design process gains environmental checkpoints and a life cycle review method.
  4. 04
Pilot on live product work and gather evidence.Apply it to one or two real developments, record the decisions and compare the outcome with the previous design.
  5. 05
Audit, review and demonstrate.Include ecodesign in internal audit and management review, close findings with evidence and extend it to other products.

Check the route before you sign. No accredited certificate exists for ISO 14006, so question any offer of one. Accredited certification in the ISO 14000 family is to ISO 14001; confirm a certification body's accreditation directly with the accreditation body that granted it, under the Global ACI arrangement. Cost

How much does ISO 14006 implementation cost?

No single price fits ecodesign: one product family on a mature ISO 14001 system is a very different scope from a multi-site group with no EMS. Sterling commits to an all-inclusive proposal with every component visible.

Cost componentWhat affects it
Consulting and implementationProducts in scope, EMS and design maturity, design sites and how much work your team carries (Design™ or Drive™)
Life cycle informationAvailable materials and supplier data, and any formal life cycle assessment, scoped separately
ISO 14001 certification, where applicableThe certification body's audit days for your EMS; ISO 14006 has no certificate and no certification fee
Internal resourcesTime from designers, purchasing and the environmental lead, and any specification changes
Software and learningIncluded in a Sterling engagement: Effivity for the system and Sterling Academy access for your people, with users, courses and access period confirmed in the proposal
Continued supportInternal audits, design-review coaching and upkeep of the approach under Sustain™

What moves the price

  • The number of product families and design teams in scope
  • Whether an ISO 14001 EMS already runs, and how well
  • How much materials and supplier information is available
  • The deadline, and how much of the work your team can carry

What a Sterling proposal always shows

  • Deliverables, responsibilities, assumptions and exclusions, set out in writing
  • Any ISO 14001 certification-body fees identified separately
  • Effivity, training and Academy access itemised at no additional cost
  • Payment milestones linked to deliverables rather than dates
  • One all-inclusive proposal. No surprises, ever

Timeline

How long does ISO 14006 implementation take?

Timing depends on whether an EMS already runs, how often your design cycle produces new or revised products and how much time designers can give. As an estimate, an organisation with a working ISO 14001 system typically needs three to six months to embed ecodesign and complete a first pilot; building the EMS in parallel takes longer.

PhaseWhat determines the pace
Scope and gap analysisAccess to designers, product data, the aspects register and existing design procedures
Policy, method and checkpointsManagement decisions on the ecodesign policy and objectives, and agreement on the life cycle review method
Pilot and evidenceThe timing of live product developments, supplier responses on materials, and design reviews completed with records
Audit, review and roll-outThe internal audit, the management review and the pace at which the approach extends to other product families

If a customer, tender or launch date drives the work, share it at the outset and we will say what is realistic.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about ISO 14006

Can you get ISO 14006 certified?

No. ISO 14006 is a guidance standard, and ISO states that ISO 14001 is the only standard in the ISO 14000 family that can be certified to. Organisations that want an independent certificate certify their EMS to ISO 14001 and use ISO 14006 to show how ecodesign works within it.

Do we need ISO 14001 before using ISO 14006?

No, although it helps. ISO 14006 is written for organisations with an ISO 14001 EMS, but ISO notes that it can also support the integration of ecodesign using other management systems, for example the design and development controls of an ISO 9001 system.

What is the difference between ISO 14006 and IEC 62430?

ISO 14006 deals with managing ecodesign through a management system; IEC 62430:2019 sets out principles, requirements and guidance for environmentally conscious design within design and development itself. The 2020 edition of ISO 14006 dropped its operational guidance because IEC 62430 covers that level, so the two work together.

Does ISO 14006 require a life cycle assessment?

No. As guidance it requires nothing, and it sets no performance criteria. It does treat life cycle thinking as essential: considering a product's environmental aspects at every stage from materials to disposal. A formal life cycle assessment under ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 is one tool you may choose for selected products.

Does ISO 14006 apply to existing products or only new designs?

Both. The standard notes that ecodesign applies to new and existing products, so a redesign or packaging update makes a good first pilot.
