Implementation walkthrough
How to implement ISO 9001: video walkthrough
A three-minute walkthrough of an ISO 9001 implementation, stage by stage, from the scope of the certificate to the independent assessment and what happens after it.
Key takeaways
- Define the certificate's scope first: activities, sites and customer expectations, and nothing the system should not cover.
- A gap analysis keeps what already works and turns what is missing into actions with owners and dates.
- Evidence matters: the system has to run long enough to produce the records an auditor will ask for.
- Internal audit and management review come before the certification body's Stage 1 and Stage 2 audits.
- An independent, accredited certification body decides on certification; Sterling prepares you for it.
What the ISO 9001 implementation video walks through
ISO 9001 is the international standard for quality management systems: a framework for managing processes, meeting customer and applicable requirements, evaluating performance and improving over time. Manufacturers, service businesses, contractors, laboratories, BPOs and public bodies all use it, which is why the implementation question is rarely whether the standard fits, but how to make it fit the way your work actually happens.
This short film walks through that journey as a sequence of stages. It is a companion to the written guidance on this site: the summary below sets out the same stages as the ISO 9001 hub describes them, so you can pause the film and read the detail behind each step.
The film suits a sponsor deciding whether to start, a coordinator planning the work, or a team that holds a certificate that is no longer working and wants to rebuild the system around how work really happens.
The stages of an ISO 9001 implementation
It starts with the scope. Confirm the activities, sites, headcount and customer expectations the certificate needs to cover, and nothing you do not want the system to cover. A gap analysis then reviews your current way of working against the requirements, keeps the practice that already works and turns what is missing into actions with owners, dates and resources.
Implementation means putting controls into use, training the people concerned and keeping the records that show the system operating. Internal audit and management review then test what has been built, and findings are closed with evidence before an independent certification body carries out its Stage 1 readiness review and Stage 2 audit. The certification decision belongs to that body. After certification, monitoring, internal audits and improvement continue alongside its surveillance audits.
Sterling's expert and experienced consultants support each stage with your process owners. Every engagement runs on Sterling OS™: Design™ when your team implements with Sterling's structure and coaching, Drive™ when Sterling consultants take on the agreed consulting and documentation work, and Effivity included to hold documents, risks, audits, actions and management review in one workspace.

ISO 9001: questions people ask
Can a small business implement ISO 9001?
Yes. The system should be proportionate to your activities, risks and complexity. A small team usually needs clear responsibilities and practical controls, not an unnecessarily large set of procedures.
Does ISO 9001 require us to replace our existing processes?
No. Start by understanding what already works and what evidence exists. Improve or add controls where the gap analysis shows a shortfall, rather than rebuilding everything.
Is ISO 9001 certification mandatory?
No law requires it in general, although customers, tenders and some regulated supply chains make it a condition of doing business. Many organisations implement ISO 9001 with no external demand at all, because they want consistent delivery and a disciplined way to improve.
Does Sterling issue the ISO 9001 certificate?
No. Sterling provides consulting and hands-on support. An independent, accredited certification body conducts the certification audit and makes the certification decision. A provider that offers to do both is offering paper.
Can we combine ISO 9001 with other standards?
Yes, where appropriate. Shared document control, internal audit and management review can support an integrated system with ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO/IEC 27001 or ISO 22000, on the harmonised structure. The specific requirements of each standard still need to be addressed.
