In short

ISO 17025 accreditation in Vietnam at a glance

In Vietnam, ISO/IEC 17025 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

Laboratory results carry weight in Vietnam when the laboratory is accredited, and accreditation here means BoA, the National Accreditation Bureau, through its VILAS programme for testing and calibration laboratories. BoA states it has been a signatory to the APAC and ILAC mutual recognition arrangements for testing and calibration laboratories since 2000, which supports acceptance of VILAS-accredited results outside Vietnam. ISO/IEC 17025 itself covers impartiality, competence, method validation, measurement uncertainty, metrological traceability and the reporting of results. Accreditation is granted by the accreditation body after assessment, including witnessing of tests or calibrations; Sterling prepares the laboratory and the accreditation body decides. Food, pharmaceutical, materials, electronics and environmental testing laboratories, and the in-house calibration functions of manufacturers, are the usual applicants. Sterling's Ho Chi Minh City office builds the quality system, validation files, uncertainty budgets and proficiency testing plan, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included. Questions follow.

The need

Who needs ISO 17025 in Vietnam, and what happens without it

In Vietnam the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Testing laboratories for food, pharmaceuticals, materials and the environmentCustomers and regulators accept results from accredited laboratories.
  • Calibration laboratories and in-house calibration functions of manufacturersTraceable calibration supports ISO 9001, ISO 13485 and IATF 16949 systems.
  • Laboratories in hi-tech parks serving electronics and biotechExport customers ask for accredited test reports.

Requirements

ISO 17025 requirements in Vietnam

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 17025 requires a laboratory to prove six things about its competence and the results it reports.

You are impartialCommercial, financial or other pressures do not influence results, and risks to impartiality are identified and managed.
Staff are competent and authorisedEach person who performs, reviews or reports work is qualified, trained, monitored and authorised for those tasks.
Equipment is calibrated and traceableEquipment is fit for purpose and calibrated, with measurement results traceable to recognised references.
Methods are validated or verifiedMethods suit the work, are validated where needed or verified before use, and measurement uncertainty is evaluated.
Results are checked and reported properlyQuality control and proficiency testing confirm validity, and reports state results clearly, accurately and without ambiguity.
The management system worksComplaints, nonconforming work, risks, internal audits and management review run under a documented management system.

In Vietnam these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 17025 explained →

Time

How long does ISO 17025 accreditation take in Vietnam?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Vietnam these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of tests or calibrations in the requested scope
  • Availability of method validation and uncertainty data
  • Proficiency testing results available before assessment
  • Scheduling around the Tết break

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 17025 accreditation cost in Vietnam?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the accreditation body’s fees, which are quoted separately. In Vietnam these factors move both.

  • Size of the accreditation scope
  • Accreditation body application and assessment fees, separate from consulting
  • Equipment calibration and reference material needs

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 17025 consultants and assessors in Vietnam

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; the accreditation body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 17025 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Vietnam are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

    Remote and on-site

Assessments include on-site witnessing of tests or calibrations; document review elements may be remote at the accreditation body's discretion.

ISO 17025 in Vietnam: questions clients ask

Who accredits laboratories to ISO/IEC 17025 in Vietnam?

BoA, the National Accreditation Bureau, through its VILAS programme for testing and calibration laboratories. Accreditation follows assessment by the bureau itself; neither a consultant nor a certification body can grant it, so a laboratory seeking it should apply to BoA directly.

    Are VILAS-accredited results recognised abroad?

BoA states that it has held APAC and ILAC MRA signatory status for testing and calibration laboratories since 2000, which is the basis for presenting VILAS results as recognised beyond Vietnam. Ask the receiving customer or regulator whether it accepts that arrangement for your scope.

    Is ISO/IEC 17025 a certification?

No. ISO/IEC 17025 leads to accreditation, which the accreditation body grants after assessment, and not to a certificate from a certification body. In Vietnam that body is BoA, through VILAS. A consultant can prepare the laboratory, but the accreditation decision is BoA's.
