ISO 22000 certification in the UAE at a glance
In the UAE, ISO 22000 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
Food businesses across the food chain — producers in KEZAD, traders and logistics operators in Jafza, caterers and central kitchens in Dubai — use ISO 22000 to turn HACCP-based controls into a certifiable food safety management system. The regulatory base is already in place in Dubai, where the Municipality's Food Code requires a documented food safety programme based on HACCP principles, audited by an approved third-party auditor, and a certified Person in Charge in every food establishment. ISO 22000 adds management-system discipline: context, leadership, prerequisite programmes, hazard control plans, verification, traceability and continual improvement. Certificates are issued by accredited certification bodies; where a retailer or export customer requires a GFSI-recognised scheme, FSSC 22000 builds directly on ISO 22000. Sterling's Dubai team implements the system from hazard analysis to internal audit and management review, with Effivity and Sterling Academy training included. The local route and questions follow.
Who needs ISO 22000 in the UAE, and what happens without it
In the UAE the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Food producers in KEZADKEZAD lists food production among its sectors; buyers ask for certified food safety management.
- Food traders and logistics operators in JafzaJafza lists food and agriculture among its sectors.
- Dubai caterers and central kitchensThe Food Code's HACCP-based programme is the base that ISO 22000 builds on.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 22000 requires a company to prove six things about keeping food safe from supplier to customer.
In the UAE these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 22000 explained →

How long does ISO 22000 certification take in the UAE?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In the UAE these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Existing Food Code programme and HACCP plans
- Number of product categories and sites
- Traceability and recall test evidence
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 22000 certification cost in the UAE?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In the UAE these factors move both.
- Number of sites and product categories
- Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
- PRP infrastructure gaps
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 22000 consultants and certification bodies in the UAE
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 22000 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in the UAE are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|
| Dubai Municipality Food Code | Related Food safety programme based on HACCP principles, audited by an approved third-party auditor; does not name ISO 22000. |

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in the UAE
Use a certification body accredited for this standard by EIAC or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its UAE accreditation scope has been verified. Edition and transition details: ISO 22000 hub →
Audit language
English audits are the norm; agree the audit and document language with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; operational sites are normally visited on-site.
ISO 22000 in the UAE: questions clients ask
Does ISO 22000 satisfy the Dubai Food Code?
Not on its own. The Dubai Municipality Food Code requires a Municipality-approved food safety programme and an approved audit, and it does not name ISO 22000. ISO 22000 can carry the programme content, yet the Municipality's approval and audit process still has to be followed in full.
ISO 22000 or FSSC 22000?
Choose FSSC 22000 where your customer requires a GFSI-recognised scheme; otherwise ISO 22000 may be enough. Start with your customers' specifications, since they settle the question, and compare the additional scheme requirements before committing to either route. If a customer has not named a scheme, ask it which one it would accept.
Who issues the certificate?
A certification body does. Use one accredited for ISO 22000 by EIAC or by another accreditor within the international mutual recognition arrangements, and confirm that its accreditation scope covers food safety and your product sector before applying. Ask to see the scope document, not just a statement.
