FSSC 22000 certification in Tanzania at a glance
In Tanzania, FSSC 22000 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
Retailers and brand owners abroad frequently write FSSC 22000 into supplier contracts, and that is what brings Tanzanian beverage, ingredient and packaging producers to the scheme. Foundation FSSC owns it and publishes a public register of licensed certification bodies, which is the first check before engaging one. FSSC 22000 builds on ISO 22000, adding sector prerequisite programmes and requirements such as food defence and food fraud mitigation. National rules still apply: TBS certifies and registers food and food products under the Standards Act. SADCAS holds international recognition for ISO 22000, while the FSSC licence and accreditation must be confirmed for each body. Certification is the certification body's decision; Sterling prepares your system and evidence. Sterling's Nairobi office leads the work with 20+ years of practice, using Effivity to keep records audit-ready for unannounced visits and Sterling Academy for staff training.
Who needs FSSC 22000 in Tanzania, and what happens without it
In Tanzania the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Food and beverage exporters supplying retailers and brand ownersMany international buyers specify a benchmarked scheme such as FSSC 22000 rather than ISO 22000 alone.
- Packaging and ingredient manufacturersFSSC 22000 covers packaging and ingredient categories that brand owners ask their suppliers to certify.
- Processors already registered with TBSTBS food registration covers national rules; FSSC 22000 adds the certified system export buyers expect.

Strip away the vocabulary and FSSC 22000 asks a company to prove six things about food safety to the level global buyers expect.
In Tanzania these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: FSSC 22000 explained →

How long does FSSC 22000 certification take in Tanzania?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Tanzania these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number of sites and food chain categories
- Prerequisite programmes to the relevant technical specification
- FSSC additional requirements such as food defence and food fraud
- Certification body availability
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does FSSC 22000 certification cost in Tanzania?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Tanzania these factors move both.
- Premises and hygiene upgrades
- Laboratory testing and environmental monitoring
- Number of product categories
- Certification body fees quoted separately
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
FSSC 22000 consultants and certification bodies in Tanzania
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers FSSC 22000 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Tanzania are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Tanzania
Choose a certification body licensed by Foundation FSSC and accredited for FSSC 22000 by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). SADCAS's international recognition covers ISO 22000 but the scheme licence comes from Foundation FSSC, so check the body on the FSSC public register and confirm the food chain categories. Audit language
Acts are published with a Kiswahili text and an English version, and bodies such as TBS and the PDPC publish in both languages. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
Production and storage areas are audited on-site, including unannounced audits as the scheme requires; some document review can be remote.
FSSC 22000 in Tanzania: questions clients ask
Why would a Tanzanian food exporter need FSSC 22000?
Because the buyer asks for it. Many retailers and brand owners specify a benchmarked scheme, and FSSC 22000 combines ISO 22000 with sector prerequisite programmes and additional requirements. If your customer accepts ISO 22000 alone, that may be enough. Ask each buyer which scheme and categories they require before you start.
How do I check an FSSC 22000 certification body?
Use Foundation FSSC's public register. The scheme owner lists licensed certification bodies and the accreditation bodies behind them, so you can confirm both the licence and the food chain categories. SADCAS's recognition covers ISO 22000, but the FSSC licence is a separate check you should make before signing.
Does TBS registration cover FSSC 22000 requirements?
No, they serve different purposes. TBS certifies and registers food, food products and cosmetics under the Standards Act, which is a national regulatory requirement. FSSC 22000 is a voluntary, buyer-driven certification of your food safety management system. Keep both in view, and confirm product registration duties with TBS.
What adds work when moving from ISO 22000 to FSSC 22000?
The scheme's extras. You need prerequisite programmes to the relevant technical specification for your category, plus FSSC additional requirements such as food defence, food fraud mitigation and environmental monitoring. Unannounced audits also change how you prepare, so the system must be audit-ready every day.
