ISO 37001 certification in Sweden at a glance
In Sweden, ISO 37001 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
Bribery risk in a Swedish company can sit far from home. It sits with agents, distributors and customers abroad, and with the gifts and hospitality that cross every sales relationship. The Lag (2021:890) om skydd för personer som rapporterar om missförhållanden gives employers a legal frame for internal reporting channels and follow-up, and Institutet mot mutor publishes a voluntary code against corruption in business life. ISO 37001 turns those expectations into a certifiable management system: risk assessment, due diligence on business associates, controls on gifts, investigations and leadership commitment. Certification comes from a certification body accredited by Swedac or by another accreditation body within the international recognition arrangements, never from Sterling; Swedac's published sub-area list does not name the standard, so ask for the scope. Sterling's Enschede office builds the risk assessment, procedures and internal audits, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included.
Who needs ISO 37001 in Sweden, and what happens without it
In Sweden the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Companies selling to public authorities and state-owned bodiesPublic buyers and large customers screen suppliers for integrity controls.
- Exporters and port operators dealing with intermediaries abroadThird-party and agent risk is where anti-bribery controls matter most.
- Employers obliged to run internal reporting channelsThe whistleblowing act sets rules for internal reporting channels and follow-up, which an anti-bribery system can use.
- Businesses adopting the industry code against corruptionInstitutet mot mutor publishes a code on corruption in business life that members and followers apply.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 37001 requires a company to prove six things about how it prevents, detects and responds to bribery.
In Sweden these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 37001 explained →

How long does ISO 37001 certification take in Sweden?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Sweden these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Bribery risk assessment across countries and intermediaries
- Due diligence on business associates
- Gifts, hospitality and conflict of interest controls
- Investigation and reporting procedures
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 37001 certification cost in Sweden?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Sweden these factors move both.
- Number of countries, subsidiaries and business associates
- Risk profile of sales and procurement
- Certification body fees quoted separately from consulting
- Integration with compliance and whistleblowing channels
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 37001 consultants and certification bodies in Sweden
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 37001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Sweden are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Sweden
Certification by a certification body accredited by Swedac or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). Swedac's published sub-area list does not name ISO 37001, so ask the certification body for its accreditation scope for anti-bribery management systems. Audit language
Audits can be held in Swedish or English; agree the language with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
Document review and many interviews can be remote; sites and high-risk functions such as sales and procurement are normally visited.
ISO 37001 in Sweden: questions clients ask
Does Swedish law require an ISO 37001 system?
The whistleblowing act does not name it. Lag (2021:890) protects people who report wrongdoing and regulates internal reporting channels and the follow-up of reports, but an anti-bribery system certificate is not required by that text. ISO 37001 is a voluntary framework that customers, tenders and boards may ask for. Take advice from counsel on your legal duties.
What is Institutet mot mutor?
Institutet mot mutor (IMM) is a Swedish body that publishes a code against corruption in business life, available on its website as the Kod mot korruption i näringslivet. The code is self-regulation, not law. Companies use it as a reference for gifts and hospitality rules, and an ISO 37001 system can sit alongside it.
How does the whistleblowing act connect to an anti-bribery system?
The act gives employers a legal framework for internal reporting channels and for how reports are received, followed up and documented. An anti-bribery system needs a way for concerns to reach management, so the same channel can serve both, provided it meets the act. Check the exact duties that apply to your organisation with counsel.
Is ISO 37001 on Swedac's list of accredited sub-areas?
No. The management-system sub-areas Swedac publishes do not mention anti-bribery. That should not stop certification, but ask the body to show the accreditation scope under which it assesses ISO 37001 and to explain how that scope is recognised, and keep its reply for customers who ask.
