AS9100 certification in Sweden at a glance
In Sweden, AS9100 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
AS9100 reaches Swedish suppliers through purchasing terms rather than through a statute: aerospace and defence customers add aviation, space and defence requirements to the ISO 9001 framework and expect their suppliers to be certified. The Swedish regulatory picture is adjacent but real. The Cybersäkerhetsförordning (2025:1507) gives Transportstyrelsen supervision of manufacturers of other transport equipment under the cybersecurity law, so quality evidence and security evidence increasingly share the supplier file. Certification is issued by a certification body whose accreditation, from Swedac or another body within the international recognition arrangements, covers the scheme; because Swedac's published sub-area list does not name AS9100, ask to see the scope. Sterling's Enschede office closes the gaps against an existing ISO 9001 system, prepares configuration management, risk and first article processes, and runs internal audits, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included.
Who needs AS9100 in Sweden, and what happens without it
In Sweden the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Precision machining, composites and electronics suppliers to aerospace and defence customersAerospace customers set supplier quality requirements in their purchasing terms.
- Manufacturers of transport equipment other than motor vehiclesThe Swedish cybersecurity ordinance names Transportstyrelsen as supervisor for this manufacturing sector, so security and quality evidence travel together.
- Companies with an ISO 9001 system moving into aviation, space or defenceAS9100 builds on the quality management base they already operate.
- Suppliers handling technical data for aerospace programmesInformation security expectations from customers sit beside the quality system.

Strip away the vocabulary and AS9100 asks a supplier to prove six things about delivering aerospace products safely and on time.
In Sweden these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: AS9100 explained →

The Sterling Promise: 100% on-time completion, 100% success, 8,100+ client engagements.Sterling does not certify. Certification decisions stay with independent bodies.
How long does AS9100 certification take in Sweden?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Sweden these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number of sites and special processes in scope
- Maturity of configuration management and first article inspection
- Customer-specific requirements from aerospace customers
- Internal audit and management review evidence
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does AS9100 certification cost in Sweden?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Sweden these factors move both.
- Number of sites and headcount in scope
- Special processes and product complexity
- Certification body fees quoted separately from consulting
- Integration with an existing ISO 9001 system
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
AS9100 consultants and certification bodies in Sweden
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers AS9100 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Sweden are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.
Laws and regulations that drive AS9100 in Sweden (3)
| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|
| Cybersäkerhetsförordning (2025:1507), 7 § | Related Transportstyrelsen is the supervisory authority under the cybersecurity law for manufacture of other transport equipment, where an operator meets the law's tests. |
| Swedac — accreditation scope for management-system certification | Accreditation Swedac's published list of management-system sub-areas does not name AS9100, so the certification body's accreditation scope should be checked. |
| Lag (2016:1145) om offentlig upphandling, 15 kap. 14 § | Market driver Public buyers who ask for quality assurance certificates must refer to systems certified by accredited bodies; an aerospace customer's own terms may be stricter. |
Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Sweden
Certification by a certification body accredited by Swedac or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). AS9100 is not named in Swedac's published sub-area list, so ask the certification body for its aerospace scheme approvals and the accreditation scope that covers them. Audit language
Audits can be held in Swedish or English; agree the audit and document language with the certification body at application and follow customer-specific clauses.
Remote and on-site
Remote elements are at the certification body's discretion; production, special processes and inspection areas are normally audited on-site.
AS9100 in Sweden: questions clients ask
Does Sweden's cybersecurity law reach aerospace manufacturers?
Possibly. The Cybersäkerhetsförordning names Transportstyrelsen as the supervisory authority for the manufacture of other transport equipment, and the law applies to operators in listed sectors that meet its tests. Whether a given aerospace manufacturer qualifies depends on its activity and size, so ask your counsel or Transportstyrelsen.
Is AS9100 on Swedac's list of accredited sub-areas?
No. The sub-areas Swedac lists are quality, environmental, safety, food safety, information security, medical device and energy management, and aerospace is not one of them. Ask each certification body which aerospace scheme approvals it holds and which accreditation scope covers them, and have it show both documents before you commit to an audit.
Can an ISO 9001 certified Swedish supplier upgrade to AS9100?
Yes, and the existing system is the foundation. AS9100 layers aerospace requirements, such as configuration control and first article inspection, onto the ISO 9001 base, so the work is a gap closure rather than a rebuild. The certification body audits the additions, and your customers may add their own clauses.
Who decides whether a Swedish supplier needs AS9100?
The customer does, through its purchasing terms. Aerospace and defence customers write AS9100 into supplier quality requirements, and that clause is the source of the obligation. Read it carefully, including which edition and scheme rules it cites, and ask the buyer whether an equivalent is accepted.
