ISO 42001 certification in Nepal at a glance
Two Nepali instruments bear on ISO/IEC 42001. Not one of them names it. So why do buyers in Nepal keep asking for the certificate?
When a software house or a bank puts machine learning into credit scoring, fraud detection or customer service, clients abroad want to know how those systems are governed. Nepal has no AI-specific statute among the instruments cited here, but the Privacy Act, 2075 (2018) still applies whenever personal data feeds a model, requiring consent and limiting use to the purpose of collection, and Nepal Rastra Bank expects payment institutions to manage technology risk on a risk-based footing. ISO/IEC 42001 provides a certifiable AI management system covering policy, impact assessment, data quality and lifecycle controls. Certification is by a body accredited for AI management systems, never by Sterling. Sterling's Mumbai office runs AI impact assessments, designs controls and integrates them with ISO 27001, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.
Who needs ISO 42001 in Nepal, and what happens without it
In Nepal the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Banks and payment firms using automated decision toolsNRB expects risk-based cyber resilience from licensed payment institutions, and AI systems add new risks to govern.
- Software and outsourcing firms building AI products for overseas clientsExport clients increasingly ask how AI risks are managed.
- Organisations processing personal data with AIThe Privacy Act, 2075 (2018) limits use of personal data to the purpose of collection.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 42001 requires a company to prove six things about how it governs the AI it builds or uses.
In Nepal these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 42001 explained →

How long does ISO 42001 certification take in Nepal?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Nepal these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number of AI systems and use cases in scope
- Maturity of data governance and model documentation
- Integration with ISO 27001 and ISO 27701
- Availability of accredited certification bodies
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 42001 certification cost in Nepal?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Nepal these factors move both.
- Number and risk level of AI systems
- Impact assessment and testing effort
- Certification body fees quoted separately from consulting
- Supplier and third-party model oversight
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 42001 consultants and certification bodies in Nepal
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 42001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Nepal are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.
Laws and regulations that drive ISO 42001 in Nepal (2)
| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|
| Privacy Act, 2075 (2018) | Expected in practice Consent and purpose limits apply to personal data used in AI systems; the Act names no standard. |
| Cyber Resilience Guidelines 2023 (Nepal Rastra Bank) | Expected in practice Risk-based cyber resilience expectations for licensed payment institutions extend to new technology; AI management standards are not named. |
"Expected in practice" means the instrument asks for the outcomes ISO/IEC 42001 covers without naming a standard, and ISO/IEC 42001 is what buyers and regulators commonly accept as evidence of them.
Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Nepal
Choose a certification body accredited for this standard by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA), and check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. NBSM, the national standards body, describes no national accreditation body for certification bodies, so certificates used in Nepal usually carry accreditation from an accreditation body in another economy; ask for the accreditation certificate and scope. Audit language
Most Nepali laws and official notices are issued in Nepali, and the Nepal Law Commission publishes English translations of many Acts, including the Privacy Act. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
Stage audits combine on-site visits with remote review of records and service tooling, at the certification body's discretion.
ISO 42001 in Nepal: questions clients ask
Does Nepal regulate artificial intelligence directly?
Not through any instrument cited here. The Privacy Act, 2075 (2018) still applies when AI systems use personal data, requiring consent at collection and use only for the purpose of collection. ISO/IEC 42001 is a voluntary framework for governing AI responsibly. Take legal advice on how privacy rules affect your AI use cases.
Why would a Nepali software firm pursue ISO/IEC 42001?
To answer client questions about AI risk with a certificate rather than a questionnaire. The standard covers AI policy, impact assessment, data quality, lifecycle controls, transparency and supplier oversight, which overseas clients increasingly ask about when outsourcing AI development or using AI-enabled services.
How does ISO/IEC 42001 relate to ISO 27001 and ISO 27701?
It uses the same management system structure. ISO 27001 secures information, ISO 27701 governs personal data, and ISO/IEC 42001 governs how AI systems are designed, deployed and monitored. Organisations often integrate all three, sharing risk assessment, internal audit and management review.
Who certifies ISO/IEC 42001 in Nepal?
A certification body accredited for AI management systems within the international recognition arrangements. Accreditation for this standard is still being extended worldwide, so ask any body for its accreditation certificate, confirm the scope includes ISO/IEC 42001, and check whether it can audit alongside an existing ISO/IEC 27001 certificate to save effort.
