In short

ISO 27701 certification in Nepal at a glance

Two Nepali instruments bear on ISO/IEC 27701. Not one of them names it. So why do buyers in Nepal keep asking for the certificate?

Nepal has no data protection authority to approve a privacy programme, so organisations need their own evidence. The Privacy Act, 2075 (2018) requires consent when personal data is collected, keeps its use to the original purpose and bars disclosure of health, income, employment, family, biometric and transaction details without consent, and the Individual Privacy Regulations, 2077 add notice before collection and secure storage of electronic records. ISO/IEC 27701 extends an ISO 27001 system with privacy controls for controllers and processors, giving banks, insurers, payment firms and outsourcing providers a structured way to show they meet those duties. Certification is by a body accredited for privacy information management, usually through accreditation in another economy, never by Sterling. Sterling's Mumbai office maps personal data, builds privacy controls and records, and prepares the audit, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.

The need

Who needs ISO 27701 in Nepal, and what happens without it

In Nepal the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Businesses handling customer personal data at scaleThe Privacy Act, 2075 (2018) requires consent at collection and limits disclosure of listed personal details.
  • Banks, insurers and payment firmsThey hold income, transaction and identity details that the Act protects, alongside NRB's security expectations.
  • IT and outsourcing providers processing data for clientsClients want evidence that personal data they share is protected and used only as instructed.

Requirements

ISO 27701 requirements in Nepal

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 27701 requires a company to prove six things about how it handles personal data.

You know whose data you hold and whyYou know what personal data you process, for which purposes and on what basis, and whether you act as controller, processor or both.
Privacy has an ownerManagement assigns responsibility for privacy and sets objectives, so everyone who handles personal data knows their role.
You assessed the privacy risksRisks to the people whose data you process are assessed and treated, including when new products and processes are designed.
People can exercise their rightsRequests to access, correct or delete data, and other individual rights, run through a defined and timely process.
Sharing and suppliers are controlledDisclosures, transfers and processors are governed by agreements and checks, so data is used only as agreed.
You can demonstrate itRecords of processing, notices and decisions are kept, and the privacy system is audited and reviewed like any management system.

In Nepal these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 27701 explained →

How Sterling gets a Nepali company certified

How to get ISO 27701 certified in Nepal

One team from the Mumbai office carries the work from scoping to certificate. Clients across Nepal are served from Sterling's Mumbai office, on-site where the work needs it and remotely otherwise.

  1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.
  2. Gap assessment against ISO/IEC 27701 and the Nepali requirements that apply to youControls you already run for your regulators and customers are reused, not rebuilt.
  3. Your system built with your team in EffivityRisks, controls, evidence, incidents and reviews in one live system the auditor can see.
  4. Internal audit, management review and corrective actionsYour internal auditors trained by Sterling; the evidence proven before the certification body arrives.
  5. Certification body stage 1 and stage 2, then surveillanceAn accredited body audits and decides. Sterling supports the audits and the three-year cycle.

Time

How long does ISO 27701 certification take in Nepal?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Nepal these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • State of the underlying ISO 27001 system
  • Number of processing activities and systems to map
  • Controller and processor roles across clients
  • Certification body scheduling

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 27701 certification cost in Nepal?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Nepal these factors move both.

  • Volume and sensitivity of personal data
  • Number of entities and systems in scope
  • Certification body fees quoted separately from consulting
  • Notice, consent and contract redesign

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 27701 consultants and certification bodies in Nepal

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 27701 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Nepal are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 27701 in Nepal (2)

    InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Privacy Act, 2075 (2018)Expected in practice
Consent, purpose limits and restrictions on disclosure; the Act names no standard.
    Individual Privacy Regulations, 2077 (वैयक्तिक गोपनीयता सम्बन्धी नियमावली, २०७७)Expected in practice
Consent for use of electronic personal information, notice before collection and secure storage; no standard is named.

"Expected in practice" means the instrument asks for the outcomes ISO/IEC 27701 covers without naming a standard, and ISO/IEC 27701 is what buyers and regulators commonly accept as evidence of them.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Nepal

Choose a certification body accredited for this standard by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA), and check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. NBSM, the national standards body, describes no national accreditation body for certification bodies, so certificates used in Nepal usually carry accreditation from an accreditation body in another economy; ask for the accreditation certificate and scope. Audit language

Most Nepali laws and official notices are issued in Nepali, and the Nepal Law Commission publishes English translations of many Acts, including the Privacy Act. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.

    Remote and on-site

Stage audits combine on-site visits with remote review of records and service tooling, at the certification body's discretion.

ISO 27701 in Nepal: questions clients ask

Does the Privacy Act recognise ISO/IEC 27701?

No, the Act names no standard and creates no certification. ISO/IEC 27701 is a voluntary way to show that a privacy information management system supports the Act's consent, purpose and disclosure rules. Treat it as evidence, not as a legal safe harbour, and keep your counsel involved in interpreting the law.

Do we need ISO 27001 before ISO/IEC 27701?

Yes. ISO/IEC 27701 extends an ISO/IEC 27001 information security management system with privacy-specific requirements for controllers and processors, so certification is normally granted together with or after ISO 27001. Organisations already certified to ISO 27001 can add the privacy extension with a focused project.

Which Nepali privacy duties does ISO/IEC 27701 help evidence?

Mainly consent, purpose and security. The Act requires consent when personal data is collected, limits use to the original purpose and bars disclosure of listed details without consent, while the 2077 Regulations add notice before collection and secure electronic storage. ISO/IEC 27701 records and controls make those duties visible. Confirm specific obligations with counsel.

Who certifies ISO/IEC 27701 in Nepal?

Normally the same certification body that holds your ISO 27001 certificate, provided its accreditation extends to privacy information management. The privacy extension is audited on top of the information security system, so splitting the two between bodies rarely makes sense. Expect a body accredited in another economy.
