ISO 9001 certification in Nepal at a glance
Two Nepali instruments bear on ISO 9001. Not one of them names it. So why do buyers in Nepal keep asking for the certificate?
Cement plants, steel mills and concrete producers are frequent ISO 9001 candidates in Nepal, and contractors, hotels and service firms follow when customers, lenders or tenders ask how work is controlled. Certificates come from accredited certification bodies within the international recognition arrangements, usually accredited in another economy. Public procurement under the Public Procurement Act, 2063 leaves the evidence to each standard bidding document, so a quality certificate is a frequent but not universal request, and exporters in zones such as Bhairahawa and Simara meet buyers who set their own quality evidence. Products may separately carry the NS mark, which is a product scheme rather than a system certificate. Sterling's Mumbai office helps organisations define scope, document processes, train internal auditors and prepare for the certification audit, with Effivity software and Sterling Academy training included with the engagement.
Who needs ISO 9001 in Nepal, and what happens without it
In Nepal the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Cement, steel and concrete manufacturersCement, steel and concrete producers supply construction and public works, where buyers and tender documents often ask for evidence of a controlled quality system.
- Contractors and suppliers bidding for public worksEach standard bidding document sets its own qualification evidence, and a quality certificate is a common request.
- Hotels, resorts and tourism operators serving international guestsOverseas partners and tour operators often ask for a documented quality system behind service delivery.
- Manufacturers holding or seeking the NS markNBSM runs product certification under the Nepal Standards (Certification Mark) Act 2037, and a controlled quality system supports consistent production.

Take the ISO 9001 readiness checkISO 9001 requirements in Nepal
Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 9001 requires a company to prove six things about how it delivers what customers order.
In Nepal these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 9001 explained →

How long does ISO 9001 certification take in Nepal?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Nepal these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number of sites, plants and processes in scope
- State of process documentation and internal audit history
- Customer and tender requirements to build into the system
- Certification body scheduling around Dashain, Tihar and monsoon access
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 9001 certification cost in Nepal?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Nepal these factors move both.
- Headcount and number of sites in scope
- Number of processes, products and outsourced activities
- Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
- Travel to plants and project sites outside the Kathmandu Valley
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 9001 consultants and certification bodies in Nepal
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 9001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Nepal are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.
Laws and regulations that drive ISO 9001 in Nepal (2)
| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|
| Public Procurement Act, 2063, Public Procurement Rules and standard bidding documents (Public Procurement Monitoring Office) | Expected in practice Each bidding document decides whether an ISO 9001 certificate is requested as evidence of quality capability. |
| Special Economic Zone Act, 2073 and Special Economic Zone Regulation, 2074 (Special Economic Zone Authority) | Does not name the standard Sets the framework for export-oriented zones such as Bhairahawa and Simara, where buyers set their own quality evidence. |
"Expected in practice" means the instrument asks for the outcomes ISO 9001 covers without naming a standard, and ISO 9001 is what buyers and regulators commonly accept as evidence of them.
Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Nepal
Choose a certification body accredited for this standard by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA), and check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. NBSM, the national standards body, describes no national accreditation body for certification bodies, so certificates used in Nepal usually carry accreditation from an accreditation body in another economy; ask for the accreditation certificate and scope. Audit language
Most Nepali laws and official notices are issued in Nepali, and the Nepal Law Commission publishes English translations of many Acts, including the Privacy Act. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
Stage audits are held at operating sites; document review and some interviews can be remote at the certification body's discretion.
ISO 9001 in Nepal: questions clients ask
Who issues ISO 9001 certificates in Nepal?
Certification is the decision of an accredited certification body, never of Sterling or the client. In Nepal, choose a body whose accreditation sits within the international recognition arrangements, ask for its accreditation certificate, and check that the scope covers your sector, sites and any construction or hydropower work before you sign.
Is ISO 9001 required to bid for government contracts in Nepal?
There is no blanket rule. Public procurement runs under the Public Procurement Act, 2063 and its Rules, using standard bidding documents published by the Public Procurement Monitoring Office, and each document sets its own qualification evidence. Read the qualification clause carefully and ask the procuring entity whether a quality certificate is mandatory.
Does the NS mark replace ISO 9001 certification?
No, they answer different questions. The NS mark is NBSM's product certification under the Nepal Standards (Certification Mark) Act 2037 and confirms a product meets a Nepal Standard, while ISO 9001 certifies the management system behind your whole operation. Many manufacturers find the second makes the first easier to sustain.
Which Nepali industries hold accredited ISO 9001 most often?
Building materials stand out: cement, steel and concrete producers supply construction and public works, where quality evidence is often requested. Service firms, hotels and contractors also pursue the standard when customers, lenders or tender documents ask for evidence of a controlled quality system.
