ISO 22301 certification in Nepal at a glance
Cyber Resilience Guidelines 2023 (Nepal Rastra Bank) refers to ISO 22301, yet none of the Nepali instruments checked makes it compulsory. Buyers in Nepal ask for it anyway.
Earthquake, monsoon flooding and landslides shape how Nepali organisations think about continuity, and Nepal Rastra Bank has added a cyber dimension. Its Cyber Resilience Guidelines 2023 expect licensed payment institutions to build the capacity to carry out critical activities and recover from successful cyberattacks, without naming any certification. ISO 22301 gives a recognised structure for that work: business impact analysis, risk assessment, continuity strategies, plans and exercises. Hydropower operators and infrastructure projects under the Public-Private Partnership and Investment Act, 2075 face similar questions from lenders and partners. Certification is by a body accredited for business continuity management, usually through accreditation in another economy, never by Sterling. Sterling's Mumbai office leads the impact analysis, writes plans and facilitates exercises, with Effivity tracking actions and Sterling Academy training included with the engagement.
Who needs ISO 22301 in Nepal, and what happens without it
In Nepal the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Payment institutions licensed by NRBThe Cyber Resilience Guidelines 2023 set expectations for recovering from cyberattacks and maintaining critical operations.
- Hydropower and infrastructure operatorsEarthquake, flood and landslide exposure makes continuity planning a lender and partner concern.
- Hotels and tourism operatorsSeasonal demand and weather disruption make recovery planning part of service reliability.

Take the ISO 22301 readiness checkISO 22301 requirements in Nepal
Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 22301 requires a company to prove six things about how it keeps operating when something goes wrong.
In Nepal these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 22301 explained →

How long does ISO 22301 certification take in Nepal?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Nepal these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number of sites and priority activities
- Dependencies on suppliers, power and connectivity
- Exercise planning and results
- Certification body scheduling
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 22301 certification cost in Nepal?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Nepal these factors move both.
- Scope of activities and locations
- Recovery site or technical resilience investment
- Certification body fees quoted separately from consulting
- Exercise design and facilitation
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 22301 consultants and certification bodies in Nepal
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 22301 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Nepal are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Nepal
Choose a certification body accredited for this standard by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA), and check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. NBSM, the national standards body, describes no national accreditation body for certification bodies, so certificates used in Nepal usually carry accreditation from an accreditation body in another economy; ask for the accreditation certificate and scope. Audit language
Most Nepali laws and official notices are issued in Nepali, and the Nepal Law Commission publishes English translations of many Acts, including the Privacy Act. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
Stage audits are held at operating sites; document review and some interviews can be remote at the certification body's discretion.
ISO 22301 in Nepal: questions clients ask
Does Nepal Rastra Bank require ISO 22301?
No, it does not name the standard. Its Cyber Resilience Guidelines 2023 expect licensed institutions to build capacity to carry out critical activities and recover from successful cyberattacks, and ISO 22301 provides a recognised structure for that. Confirm with NRB how it will assess your resilience before choosing certification as evidence.
Why is business continuity a particular concern in Nepal?
Because many operations depend on infrastructure exposed to natural hazards and seasonal disruption. Hydropower, road-dependent supply chains and tourism can all be interrupted, and partners and lenders want to see tested recovery plans. ISO 22301 gives a structured way to assess impacts and prove recovery.
What does an ISO 22301 project produce?
A business impact analysis, a risk assessment of disruption scenarios, continuity strategies and plans for priority activities, and an exercise programme that tests them. Certification auditors look for evidence that exercises happened and that lessons led to changes, so plan at least one realistic exercise before the audit.
Who certifies ISO 22301 for a Nepali organisation?
Business continuity certificates for Nepali organisations generally come from a certification body accredited outside Nepal. Ask prospective bodies whether auditors can visit remote sites such as power stations, how they handle exercises in the audit sample, and for the accreditation certificate showing business continuity in scope.
