In short

ISO 27001 certification in Mauritius at a glance

Data Protection Act 2017 (Act 20/2017) is the instrument itself: it applies to the organisations within its scope, and buyers and partners in Mauritius ask for evidence that you meet it.

Information security certification in Mauritius is driven first by financial regulation. The Bank of Mauritius Guideline on Cyber and Technology Risk Management sets minimum requirements for banks and payment service providers and invites them to consider standards such as NIST, COBIT and other relevant ISO standards, while the Guideline on Use of Cloud Services governs outsourced infrastructure. Since June 2026 the critical information infrastructure regulations have let the National Cybersecurity Committee designate systems in financial services, ICT, energy, water and transport. BPO and software firms add overseas customer demand, and the Data Protection Act 2017 adds a legal duty to secure personal data. An ISO/IEC 27001 certificate from an accredited certification body ties these threads into one management system, but it does not replace the Bank's own audit requirement. Sterling's Johannesburg office delivers the work, using Effivity to keep evidence current and drawing on 8,100+ client engagements in 60+ countries.

The need

Who needs ISO 27001 in Mauritius, and what happens without it

In Mauritius the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Banks and payment service providersThe Bank of Mauritius sets minimum cyber and technology risk requirements for institutions it licenses or authorises, and an ISMS gives the controls and evidence they examine.
  • Financial institutions using cloud and outsourced servicesThe Bank's cloud guideline asks institutions to govern, assess and secure cloud arrangements, and suppliers are asked how they meet equivalent controls.
  • Owners of critical information infrastructureDesignated owners must follow the directions of their sector's regulatory body, so they need a demonstrable security programme.
  • BPO, ICT and software companies with overseas customersOverseas customers ask outsourced service providers for independent evidence of an information security management system.
  • Controllers and processors holding large volumes of personal dataThe Data Protection Act 2017 requires appropriate security and organisational measures, and ISO/IEC 27001 is a recognised way to organise them.

ISO 27001 requirements in Mauritius

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 27001 requires a company to prove six things about how it protects the information it holds.

You know what you are protectingThe scope is defined: the information, systems, locations and people that matter, and who inside and outside relies on them.
Management owns itTop management sets the information security policy and objectives, assigns roles and gives the effort the resources it needs.
You decided what could go wrong, and what to do about itSecurity risks are assessed against agreed criteria, and each is treated with a recorded choice of safeguards and the reasons for it.
The safeguards work every dayAccess, suppliers, devices, backups, incidents and staff awareness are managed as routine operations, not one-off projects.
You can show itPolicies, risk decisions and records are kept, so an auditor sees the system working in practice rather than on paper.
You check yourselvesSecurity performance is measured, internal audits and management reviews take place, and what they find is put right.

In Mauritius these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 27001 explained →

How Sterling gets a Mauritian company certified

Time

How long does ISO 27001 certification take in Mauritius?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Mauritius these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Scope: number of sites, data centres, cloud services and teams
  • Maturity of the risk assessment and Statement of Applicability
  • Existing controls from Bank of Mauritius guidelines or customer security requirements
  • Certification body scheduling and any buyer-specific audit conditions

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 27001 certification cost in Mauritius?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Mauritius these factors move both.

  • Headcount and number of sites in scope
  • Number of systems, applications and outsourced suppliers
  • Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
  • Penetration testing, monitoring tools and remediation work

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 27001 consultants and certification bodies in Mauritius

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 27001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Mauritius are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 27001 in Mauritius (4)

InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Bank of Mauritius Guideline on Cyber and Technology Risk Management (BOM/BSD 780, May 2023)Refers to / expects
Minimum requirements for institutions licensed or authorised by the Bank; encourages standards in international guidance such as the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, COBIT and other relevant ISO standards, and names no ISO standard as mandatory.
Bank of Mauritius Guideline on Use of Cloud Services (BOM/BSD 46, September 2022)Does not name ISO/IEC 27001
Sets governance, risk and security expectations for cloud arrangements entered into by financial institutions.
Cybersecurity and Cybercrime (Critical Information Infrastructure Designation) Regulations 2026 (GN No. 113 of 2026)Does not name the standard
The National Cybersecurity Committee may designate critical information infrastructure and owners must comply with the directions of the regulatory body.
Data Protection Act 2017 (Act 20/2017)The instrument itself
Section 31 requires appropriate security and organisational measures, including pseudonymisation and encryption, resilience, restoration and regular testing, and a written contract with any processor.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Mauritius

Choose a certification body accredited for this standard by the Mauritius Accreditation Service (MAURITAS) or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. The external independent audit that the Bank of Mauritius asks financial institutions to obtain on their cyber and technology risk framework is a regulator-facing assessment and is not an ISO/IEC 27001 certificate. Audit language

English is the usual language of business records, standards and tenders in Mauritius, with French widely used alongside it, and interviews with staff or suppliers can run in French or another local language. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.

Remote and on-site

Stage audits cover the management system and the sites, data centres and teams in scope; document review and interviews can be remote at the certification body's discretion, while operations rooms and data centres are normally visited.

ISO 27001 in Mauritius: questions clients ask

Is ISO 27001 mandatory for banks in Mauritius?

Not by name. The Bank of Mauritius Guideline on Cyber and Technology Risk Management sets minimum requirements and says institutions should also consider standards in international guidance, including the NIST framework, COBIT and other relevant ISO standards, but it makes no single ISO standard mandatory. Banks should confirm what the Bank expects of them directly with the Bank.

Do the critical information infrastructure regulations require ISO 27001?

No standard is named. The 2026 regulations let the National Cybersecurity Committee designate systems in financial services, the public service, ICT and broadcasting, energy and water, and transport, and they oblige designated owners to follow the regulatory body's directions. An ISMS helps you show a security programme, but ask your regulator what it will direct.

Can an ISO 27001 certificate show compliance with the Data Protection Act security duty?

It supports but does not prove compliance. Section 31 of the Act requires security measures suited to the harm and the nature of the data, including encryption where appropriate, resilience, restoration and regular testing, and a written processor contract. An ISMS organises many of these controls, yet the Act cites no standard, so test your position with your counsel or the Office.

Is the Bank of Mauritius external audit the same as ISO 27001 certification?

No. The Bank's guideline asks financial institutions to have their cyber and technology risk framework audited by an external independent assessor and to report the result to the Bank. ISO 27001 certification is a voluntary assessment by an accredited certification body. One can inform the other, but each has its own audience, so plan them separately.
