ISO 37301 certification in Maldives at a glance

Two Maldivian instruments bear on ISO 37301. Not one of them names it. So why do buyers in Maldives keep asking for the certificate?

New Maldivian laws arrive steadily: the Government Gazette lists dozens of Acts and amendments each year, from the Companies Act of 2023 to the Workplace Safety and Health Act of 2024 and recent changes to tax, payments and fisheries laws. For banks licensed by the Maldives Monetary Authority, insurers and diversified groups, keeping track of who owns each obligation is a governance task in its own right. ISO 37301 gives that task a structure: an obligations register, compliance risk assessment, defined roles, training, monitoring, reporting and response to breaches, audited by an accredited certification body. It pairs naturally with ISO 37001 for organisations that also face bribery risk. Sterling's Mumbai office builds the obligations register with your legal and operational teams, sets up monitoring of new laws and keeps evidence in Effivity, with Sterling Academy training for the people who own each obligation.

The need

Who needs ISO 37301 in Maldives, and what happens without it

In Maldives the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Banks and payment firms under MMA oversightBanking and payment laws give the MMA licensing and oversight powers that firms must track.
  • Companies adapting to new company and sector lawsThe Companies Act, Law No. 7/2023, and a steady flow of amending laws published in the Government Gazette change obligations.
  • Employers covered by new workplace safety dutiesThe Workplace Safety and Health Act, Law No. 2/2024, added policy and safety officer duties.

ISO 37301 requirements in Maldives

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 37301 requires a company to prove six things about how it meets its legal and other obligations.

You know your obligationsObligations from laws, regulators, contracts and voluntary commitments are identified and kept current.
The governing body and management leadThe governing body and top management set the compliance policy and support a culture in which compliance is expected.
A compliance function has authorityA compliance function is resourced, independent enough to act and has direct access to the governing body.
Compliance risks are assessedRisks of failing to meet obligations are assessed, and controls are designed in proportion to them.
Concerns are raised and handledPeople can raise concerns without fear of retaliation, and suspected breaches are investigated and corrected.
You monitor and reportCompliance performance is monitored, reported to leadership, audited and reviewed so the system improves.

In Maldives these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 37301 explained →

How Sterling gets a Maldivian company certified

How to get ISO 37301 certified in Maldives

One team from the Mumbai office carries the work from scoping to certificate. Clients across the Maldives are served from Sterling's Mumbai office, on-site where the work needs it and remotely otherwise.

    1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.
    2. Gap assessment against ISO 37301 and the Maldivian requirements that apply to youControls you already run for your regulators and customers are reused, not rebuilt.
    3. Your system built with your team in EffivityRisks, controls, evidence, incidents and reviews in one live system the auditor can see.
    4. Internal audit, management review and corrective actionsYour internal auditors trained by Sterling; the evidence proven before the certification body arrives.
    5. Certification body stage 1 and stage 2, then surveillanceAn accredited body audits and decides. Sterling supports the audits and the three-year cycle.

      Time

How long does ISO 37301 certification take in Maldives?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Maldives these are the factors that set the timeline.

      • Breadth of the obligations register across laws and regulators
      • Maturity of compliance roles and reporting lines
      • Monitoring of new laws and amendments

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

      Cost

How much does ISO 37301 certification cost in Maldives?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Maldives these factors move both.

      • Number of entities and regulated activities
      • Compliance monitoring tools
      • Training across functions

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

        Choosing a partner

ISO 37301 consultants and certification bodies in Maldives

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

        • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 37301 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
        • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Maldives are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
        • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
        • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 37301 in Maldives (2)

          InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Companies Act (Law No. 7/2023)Does not name the standard
The official legislation portal lists it as in force from 1 January 2024; it sets the framework within which company boards manage obligations.
Maldives Banking Act (Law No. 24/2010)Does not name the standard
The MMA licenses banks and weighs risk management procedures; a compliance management system helps track those obligations.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Maldives

Choose a certification body accredited for this standard by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA), and check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector; the buyer or regulator decides which accreditation it accepts. Edition and transition details: ISO 37301 hub →

          Audit language

Dhivehi is the national language and Acts are published in it, while regulator websites and many Gazette bid notices are in English; audits commonly run in English with interviews in Dhivehi where staff prefer it. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.

          Remote and on-site

Document review and many interviews can be remote; head office and key functions may be visited on-site.

ISO 37301 in Maldives: questions clients ask

What is ISO 37301 used for in the Maldives?

It helps organisations identify their legal and regulatory obligations, assign owners, monitor them and act when something changes. Banks overseen by the MMA and groups adapting to new laws, such as the Companies Act of 2023, use it to keep obligations under control.

Does the Companies Act require a compliance system?

Nothing recorded here makes ISO 37301 mandatory. The portal lists the Companies Act, Law No. 7/2023, as in force from 1 January 2024, and boards manage their obligations within it. A certified compliance system is a voluntary way to show that control; your counsel can advise on board duties.

How do companies keep track of new Maldivian laws?

By monitoring the Government Gazette and the official legislation portal and updating an obligations register when laws or amendments appear. ISO 37301 requires that monitoring to be assigned and evidenced, which is often the step that needs the most work.

Can ISO 37301 be combined with ISO 37001?

Yes. Both follow the same management system structure, so policies, risk assessment, training and internal audit can be shared. Many organisations certify them together, which reduces cost and gives the board one view of compliance and anti-bribery risk across the group.
