In short

ISO 37001 certification in Maldives at a glance

One Maldivian instrument bears on ISO 37001. It does not name the standard. So why do buyers in Maldives keep asking for the certificate?

Island leases, construction contracts and supply deals with state-owned companies all involve decisions where bribery risk is real, and Maldivian businesses that bid for public work face close scrutiny of how they win it. Public bodies publish invitations for bids in the Government Gazette with their own criteria, resort developers deal with island leasing under the Tourism Act, and the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, most recently amended by Law No. 26/2024, sets the institutional backdrop. ISO 37001 provides a management system for preventing, detecting and responding to bribery: a risk assessment, policy and controls, due diligence on business associates, training, reporting channels and investigation. An accredited certification body audits it. Sterling's Mumbai office runs the risk assessment, writes proportionate controls and trains staff through Sterling Academy, with Effivity holding due diligence records and gifts registers. Your counsel should confirm legal duties.

The need

Who needs ISO 37001 in Maldives, and what happens without it

In Maldives the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Contractors and suppliers bidding for public and state-company workInvitations for bids appear in the Government Gazette, and bidders face scrutiny of how they win and perform contracts.
  • Resort developers dealing with island leases and permitsLeasing of islands for resorts under the Tourism Act involves government decisions where integrity matters.
  • State-owned companies and their joint venture partnersPublic money and procurement bring anti-corruption oversight.

ISO 37001 requirements in Maldives

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 37001 requires a company to prove six things about how it prevents, detects and responds to bribery.

Leadership says no to briberyTop management and the governing body set an anti-bribery policy and show visible, consistent commitment to it.
Someone independent oversees complianceAn anti-bribery compliance function has the authority and independence to oversee the system.
You assessed your bribery risksBribery risks across activities, locations, business partners and transactions are assessed and kept up to date.
People and partners are checkedDue diligence covers relevant staff, business partners and projects, with controls on gifts, hospitality and donations.
Financial and other controls workFinancial and non-financial controls make it hard to pay or receive a bribe without it being noticed.
Concerns can be raised and investigatedStaff can report concerns in confidence without retaliation, and suspected bribery is investigated and acted on.

In Maldives these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 37001 explained →

Time

How long does ISO 37001 certification take in Maldives?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Maldives these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Bribery risk assessment across functions and partners
  • Due diligence on agents, joint venture partners and suppliers
  • Training and reporting channels in place

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 37001 certification cost in Maldives?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Maldives these factors move both.

  • Number of entities, sites and high-risk roles
  • Due diligence on business associates
  • Investigation and reporting arrangements

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 37001 consultants and certification bodies in Maldives

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 37001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Maldives are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 37001 in Maldives (2)

    InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Anti-Corruption Commission Act (Law No. 13/2008, as amended)Does not name the standard
The Act concerns the Anti-Corruption Commission; the Government Gazette lists its third amendment as Law No. 26/2024.
Invitations for bids in the Government GazetteTender practice
Each bid document sets its own criteria; an anti-bribery management system supports integrity in bidding.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Maldives

Choose a certification body accredited for this standard by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA), and check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector; the buyer or regulator decides which accreditation it accepts. Edition and transition details: ISO 37001 hub →

    Audit language

Dhivehi is the national language and Acts are published in it, while regulator websites and many Gazette bid notices are in English; audits commonly run in English with interviews in Dhivehi where staff prefer it. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.

    Remote and on-site

Document review and many interviews can be remote; head office and sites with high-risk functions such as procurement and sales may be visited on-site.

ISO 37001 in Maldives: questions clients ask

Does Maldivian law require ISO 37001?

No law recorded here requires it. The Anti-Corruption Commission Act concerns the Commission, and the Gazette lists its third amendment as Law No. 26/2024. ISO 37001 is a voluntary system for preventing and detecting bribery; ask your counsel how anti-corruption law applies to your business.

Why would a contractor pursue ISO 37001?

To show public buyers and partners that bribery risk is managed in bidding and delivery. Gazette tender documents set their own criteria, so certification will not always score points, but a working system protects the company where scrutiny is highest.

What is due diligence under ISO 37001?

It is the proportionate checking of transactions, projects and business associates such as agents, joint venture partners and suppliers before and during the relationship. Its depth follows the bribery risk assessment, and it often takes the most time to set up.

    Who certifies ISO 37001?

An accredited certification body whose scope covers anti-bribery management systems. Check the accreditation and ask whether the body has experience in your sector, such as construction or tourism. Sterling designs the system with your team; the certification body audits, decides and runs surveillance afterwards.
