ISO 45001 certification in Maldives at a glance
One Maldivian instrument bears on ISO 45001. It does not name the standard. So why do buyers in Maldives keep asking for the certificate?
Health and safety officers became a requirement at every Maldivian workplace with the Workplace Safety and Health Act, Law No. 2/2024, which also gives employers general safety duties and asks for a health and safety policy in the form its regulations set. Contractors running marine works, resorts with large island workforces and fish processing plants feel those duties first. ISO 45001 organises them into a working system: hazard identification and risk assessment, worker consultation, legal compliance, incident investigation and continual improvement, all checked by an accredited certification body. Gazette tender documents for construction and services may also ask bidders to show safety certification. Sterling's Mumbai office helps employers set up the system, trains supervisors and safety officers through Sterling Academy and keeps inspections and actions current in Effivity, working on-site at islands and yards where the risks are.
Who needs ISO 45001 in Maldives, and what happens without it
In Maldives the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Construction and marine works contractorsThe Workplace Safety and Health Act gives every employer general safety duties and requires a health and safety officer at each workplace.
- Resort and hospitality operators with large island workforcesEmployers must prepare a health and safety policy and appoint safety officers for each workplace, including island sites.
- Fish processing and boatyard operationsPlants and yards carry machinery, cold storage and manual handling risks that the Act's employer duties cover.
- Bidders for public and state-company contractsGazette tender documents set their own criteria and may ask for safety certification.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 45001 requires a company to prove six things about keeping its people safe and healthy at work.
In Maldives these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 45001 explained →

How long does ISO 45001 certification take in Maldives?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Maldives these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number of worksites and islands
- Maturity of risk assessment and incident records
- Worker consultation arrangements and language needs
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 45001 certification cost in Maldives?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Maldives these factors move both.
- Number of employees and sites
- High-risk activities such as diving, marine works or work at height
- Training for supervisors and safety officers
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 45001 consultants and certification bodies in Maldives
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 45001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Maldives are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.
Laws and regulations that drive ISO 45001 in Maldives (2)
| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|
| Workplace Safety and Health Act (Law No. 2/2024) | Does not name the standard It sets employer duties, a health and safety policy in the form the regulations set and a health and safety officer at every workplace; ISO 45001 is a voluntary framework for meeting them. |
| Invitations for bids in the Government Gazette | Tender practice Each bid document sets its own criteria, and safety certification may be among them for construction and service contracts. |
Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Maldives
Choose a certification body accredited for this standard by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA), and check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector; the buyer or regulator decides which accreditation it accepts. Audit language
Dhivehi is the national language and Acts are published in it, while regulator websites and many Gazette bid notices are in English; audits commonly run in English with interviews in Dhivehi where staff prefer it. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
Document review may be remote; worksites, plant rooms and staff accommodation in scope are audited on-site, including interviews with workers.
ISO 45001 in Maldives: questions clients ask
Does the Workplace Safety and Health Act require ISO 45001?
No. Law No. 2/2024 sets general duties for employers, asks for a health and safety policy prepared as the regulations set out and requires a health and safety officer at every workplace, but it does not name ISO 45001. The standard is a practical way to organise those duties. Your counsel can confirm the legal detail.
Who oversees workplace safety under the 2024 Act?
The Act gives roles to the Ministry responsible for employment, an advisory council that guides the Minister and a Director General for Workplace Safety and Health who monitors compliance, and it refers to the Labour Relations Authority set up under the Employment Act. Contact these bodies for guidance on inspections and reporting.
How does ISO 45001 help a resort with island workforces?
It turns the Act's policy and safety officer duties into a working system across every island. Hazards from kitchens, boats, diving, maintenance and staff housing are assessed in one register, workers are consulted and incidents investigated the same way everywhere. Multi-island scope and language needs shape the timeline.
What should contractors prepare before an ISO 45001 audit?
Live worksites with risk assessments in use, incident and inspection records, and trained supervisors. The certification body visits sites and interviews workers, so marine works, diving or work at height must show controls in practice. Training for safety officers and supervisors is often the largest preparation cost.
