In short

ISO 17025 accreditation in Jordan at a glance

In Jordan, ISO/IEC 17025 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

Laboratories in Jordan have a national route to recognised competence: the Accreditation Unit of the Jordan Accreditation System, JAS-AU, which ILAC lists as a signatory for testing and calibration under ISO/IEC 17025 from 29 October 2017, for medical testing, and for inspection from 26 December 2021. Accreditation is the formal recognition that a laboratory is technically competent for named tests or calibrations, which is different from the certification of a management system and is granted by the accreditation body, never by Sterling. The Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization's metrology department adds national calibration, and its stated objectives include accreditation of laboratories. Food testers supporting exporters, factory quality laboratories, calibration providers and independent test houses are the usual applicants. Sterling's Dubai office prepares laboratories by building the quality manual, validating methods, estimating uncertainty and rehearsing the assessment, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.

The need

Who needs ISO 17025 in Jordan, and what happens without it

In Jordan the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Independent testing and calibration laboratoriesCustomers, regulators and exporters trust results more readily when a laboratory's competence has been assessed by the accreditation body for the specific tests it offers.
  • Food and product testing laboratories supporting exportersExport buyers and importing authorities often ask for results from accredited laboratories, which makes accreditation a commercial advantage.
  • Manufacturers with in-house quality and calibration laboratoriesA factory laboratory that releases product or issues calibration data for customers can show competence through accreditation of the methods it relies on.
  • Calibration providers serving industry and clinicsInstrument users need traceable calibration, and accredited providers can state uncertainty and traceability to customers and auditors.

Requirements

ISO 17025 requirements in Jordan

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 17025 requires a laboratory to prove six things about its competence and the results it reports.

You are impartialCommercial, financial or other pressures do not influence results, and risks to impartiality are identified and managed.
Staff are competent and authorisedEach person who performs, reviews or reports work is qualified, trained, monitored and authorised for those tasks.
Equipment is calibrated and traceableEquipment is fit for purpose and calibrated, with measurement results traceable to recognised references.
Methods are validated or verifiedMethods suit the work, are validated where needed or verified before use, and measurement uncertainty is evaluated.
Results are checked and reported properlyQuality control and proficiency testing confirm validity, and reports state results clearly, accurately and without ambiguity.
The management system worksComplaints, nonconforming work, risks, internal audits and management review run under a documented management system.

In Jordan these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 17025 explained →

Time

How long does ISO 17025 accreditation take in Jordan?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Jordan these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of methods and disciplines in the proposed scope
  • Method validation and measurement uncertainty work
  • Participation in proficiency testing or interlaboratory comparisons
  • Accreditation body assessment scheduling

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 17025 accreditation cost in Jordan?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the accreditation body’s fees, which are quoted separately. In Jordan these factors move both.

  • Number of methods, locations and staff in scope
  • Reference standards, calibration and environmental controls
  • Accreditation body fees, quoted separately from consulting
  • Proficiency testing participation fees

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 17025 consultants and assessors in Jordan

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; the accreditation body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 17025 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Jordan are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 17025 in Jordan (2)

    InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Jordan Accreditation System – Accreditation Unit (JAS-AU) and the ILAC ArrangementAccreditation
ILAC states that JAS-AU became a Full Member and signatory to the ILAC MRA for testing and calibration under ISO/IEC 17025 and for medical testing under ISO 15189, and later for inspection under ISO/IEC 17020; accreditation is granted by the accreditation body, not by Sterling.

The national metrology department calibrates measuring instruments and verifies legal measuring instruments; the Organization's stated objectives include accreditation of laboratories.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Jordan

Accreditation, not certification: ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation is granted by an accreditation body after it assesses technical competence for specific tests or calibrations. In Jordan that body is the Accreditation Unit of the Jordan Accreditation System (JAS-AU), which ILAC lists as a signatory to its arrangement for calibration, testing and medical testing from 29 October 2017 and for inspection from 26 December 2021; an accreditation body from another economy within the arrangements can also accredit a Jordanian laboratory. Confirm the current scope list and application rules with the accreditation body. Sterling prepares laboratories but does not accredit, certify, attest or validate. Audit language

Arabic and English are both used in audits and documents; agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and say early if interviews will run in Arabic.

    Remote and on-site

The accreditation body assesses laboratories on-site, witnessing tests and calibrations; document review and some interviews may be remote at its discretion.

ISO 17025 in Jordan: questions clients ask

    Who accredits laboratories in Jordan?

The Accreditation Unit of the Jordan Accreditation System, JAS-AU. ILAC announced in 2017 that it became a Full Member and signatory for testing and calibration under ISO/IEC 17025 and for medical testing under ISO 15189, and extended its status to inspection under ISO/IEC 17020 in 2022. Accreditation is granted by the unit, not by Sterling, so confirm the current scope and application rules with it.

Is ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation the same as ISO 9001 certification for a laboratory?

No. ISO 9001 certifies a management system and is issued by a certification body. ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation formally recognises technical competence for named tests or calibrations, granted by the accreditation body after it assesses methods, personnel, equipment and results. A laboratory may hold both, but only accreditation supports international recognition of its results.

Where do Jordanian laboratories obtain calibration traceability?

From calibration providers whose scope covers the quantity and range required. The Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization's metrology department calibrates measuring instruments, and ILAC lists the accreditation unit as a signatory for calibration, so a laboratory can combine national calibration with accredited providers. Check each provider's stated uncertainty against your own needs before you rely on its certificates.

    Can a factory's in-house quality laboratory seek ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation?

Yes, if it can show competence and impartiality for its scope, which means documented and verified methods, measurement uncertainty, trained staff, controlled equipment and monitoring of results through proficiency testing or comparisons. Many laboratories choose a narrow scope covering the tests customers rely on. The accreditation body decides whether the scope is acceptable.
