ISO 17025 accreditation in France at a glance
Cofrac is the instrument itself: it applies to the organisations within its scope, and buyers and partners in France ask for evidence that you meet it.
Laboratory competence in France is confirmed by one body. Cofrac, designated as the sole national accreditation body under Regulation (EC) No 765/2008, runs a laboratories section that accredits testing, analysis and calibration laboratories as well as organisers of inter-laboratory comparisons and producers of reference materials. Its LAB REF 02 document, at revision 15, sets the requirements for accreditation to NF EN ISO/IEC 17025:2017. The result is accreditation of a defined scope, not a certificate of the whole organisation, and that scope is what customers, auditors and regulators read. Sterling does not accredit; Cofrac does. Sterling's Enschede office prepares laboratories in France for the assessment, covering method validation, uncertainty and quality documentation, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.
Who needs ISO 17025 in France, and what happens without it
In France the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Independent testing and analysis laboratoriesCofrac's laboratories section accredits test, analysis and calibration laboratories.
- Calibration laboratories serving industryCustomers rely on accredited calibration results across quality systems.
- In-house laboratories of manufacturers and food producersAn accredited scope gives customers and auditors confidence in results.
- Proficiency-testing providers and reference-material producersCofrac's section also covers inter-laboratory comparison organisers and reference-material producers.

Take the ISO/IEC 17025 readiness checkISO 17025 requirements in France
Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 17025 requires a laboratory to prove six things about its competence and the results it reports.
In France these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 17025 explained →

How long does ISO 17025 accreditation take in France?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In France these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Scope of tests or calibrations to be accredited
- Measurement uncertainty and traceability work
- Validation of methods
- Proficiency-testing participation
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 17025 accreditation cost in France?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the accreditation body’s fees, which are quoted separately. In France these factors move both.
- Number of methods and measurement ranges
- Equipment calibration and reference standards
- Proficiency-testing costs
- Accreditation-body assessment effort
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 17025 consultants and assessors in France
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; the accreditation body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 17025 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in France are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in France
This is accreditation, not certification: Cofrac, France's sole national accreditation body, accredits the laboratory against NF EN ISO/IEC 17025:2017, within the requirements of its LAB REF 02 document. Sterling does not accredit; the laboratory applies to Cofrac. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 17025 hub →
Audit language
French; Cofrac documents and assessments work in French, and technical records are normally in French or English by agreement.
Remote and on-site
Document review can be remote; assessment is on-site at the laboratory, with witnessing of tests and calibrations.
ISO 17025 in France: questions clients ask
Who accredits laboratories in France?
Cofrac, the Comité français d'accréditation. It is the sole national accreditation body and has a laboratories section for test, analysis and calibration laboratories. You apply to Cofrac directly, and the accreditation is awarded to your laboratory for a defined scope. Sterling prepares you for that assessment but cannot accredit.
Which Cofrac document sets the ISO 17025 requirements?
LAB REF 02, in revision 15, titled as the requirements for the accreditation of laboratories according to NF EN ISO/IEC 17025:2017. Read it alongside the standard, because it records how Cofrac applies the standard to its assessments. Check the Cofrac document library for the current revision before applying.
Is ISO 17025 accreditation the same as ISO 9001 certification?
No. Cofrac keeps separate sections for laboratories and for management-system certification bodies. Laboratory accreditation confirms technical competence for a defined scope of tests or calibrations, while an ISO 9001 certificate confirms a quality management system. A laboratory may hold both, but one does not replace the other.
Does Cofrac accredit proficiency-testing providers too?
Yes, its laboratories section covers organisers of inter-laboratory comparisons and producers of reference materials alongside testing, analysis and calibration laboratories. Cofrac has also announced the end of the transition to the 2023 edition of ISO/IEC 17043 for comparison providers. Providers should check the current Cofrac requirements for their scope.
