ISO 14001 certification in France at a glance
Directive 2014/24/EU, Article 62(2) refers to ISO 14001, yet none of the French instruments checked makes it compulsory. Buyers in France ask for it anyway.
The 2026 edition of ISO 14001 is the live issue for French organisations: Cofrac reports that the French version, NF EN ISO 14001:2026, was published in April and has issued a transition note for certification bodies, building on the transition requirements Global ACI set in September. Certificates come from bodies accredited by Cofrac, the sole national accreditation body. Public buyers can use the standard too, since the EU procurement directive lets authorities that want environmental certificates refer to EMAS or to environmental management standards certified by accredited bodies, and a certified system that includes an energy audit can also meet the energy efficiency directive's exemption. Sterling does not certify; the accredited body does. Sterling's Enschede office builds or updates the environmental management system for clients in France, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.
Who needs ISO 14001 in France, and what happens without it
In France the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Bidders for contracts that ask for environmental management evidenceThe EU procurement directive points authorities to EMAS or to environmental management standards certified by accredited bodies.
- Large energy consumersA certified environmental management system that includes an energy audit can exempt an enterprise from the Directive's separate energy duties.
- Manufacturers and industrial sites supplying large groupsCustomers use certificates from Cofrac-accredited bodies to screen suppliers.
- Organisations already certified to the 2015 editionCofrac has published the transition route to the 2026 edition.
- Food, chemical and automotive suppliers working on shared sitesSite environmental performance is a recurring audit theme in these supply chains.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 14001 requires a company to prove six things about how its activities affect the environment.
In France these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 14001 explained →

How long does ISO 14001 certification take in France?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In France these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number of sites and environmental aspects
- Legal-compliance register to build or refresh
- Moving from the 2015 to the 2026 edition
- Contractors and suppliers within scope
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 14001 certification cost in France?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In France these factors move both.
- Number of sites and activities
- Aspect and compliance evaluation work
- Monitoring and measurement tools
- Certification-body audit effort
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 14001 consultants and certification bodies in France
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 14001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in France are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in France
Use a certification body accredited by Cofrac for ISO 14001 and confirm it has moved its scope to the 2026 edition. Cofrac is France's sole national accreditation body, and its mission includes wide acceptance of the certificates of the bodies it accredits through mutual recognition agreements. Cofrac published its transition note for NF EN ISO 14001:2026 on 16 September 2026, covering the move from the 2015 edition including its 2024 amendment on climate-related actions. Audit language
French or English; agree with the certification body, and expect French-language permits and records to be reviewed on site.
Remote and on-site
Document review can be remote; site audits are on-site because the audit looks at operational controls, emissions, waste and emergency arrangements.
ISO 14001 in France: questions clients ask
Which edition of ISO 14001 do French certificates follow now?
The 2026 edition is now the reference. Cofrac reports that the French version, NF EN ISO 14001:2026, appeared in April and that it has issued a transition note covering movement from the 2015 edition with its 2024 climate amendment. Ask your certification body what timetable it applies to your certificate, and confirm that its accreditation scope has moved too.
Does ISO 14001 count in French public tenders?
It can, but no tender must ask for it. When an authority demands an environmental management certificate, the EU directive tells it to refer to EMAS, other recognised systems or standards based on European or international standards, certified by accredited bodies. An equivalent certificate from another Member State has to be accepted too. The tender's own wording decides what you submit.
Could ISO 14001 exempt us from energy audits?
Possibly. The EU energy efficiency directive exempts an enterprise whose environmental management system is certified by an independent body, provided the system includes an energy audit meeting the Directive's minimum criteria. The French implementing rules decide the detail, so check them with your counsel or the competent authority before dropping a separate audit.
Is ISO 14001 an alternative to EMAS?
They are different schemes that the procurement directive names side by side. It refers authorities to EMAS, to other systems recognised under the EMAS regulation, or to environmental management standards based on European or international standards and certified by accredited bodies. ISO 14001 falls in the last group. Which one a buyer prefers is a matter for the tender documents.
