ISO 42001 certification in Czechia at a glance
Act No. 110/2019 Coll. on personal data processing (zákon o zpracování osobních údajů) is the instrument itself: it applies to the organisations within its scope, and buyers and partners in Czechia ask for evidence that you meet it.
AI governance has arrived in Czechia through EU law first. Regulation (EU) 2024/1689, the Artificial Intelligence Act, lays down harmonised rules for AI systems, and it neither names ISO/IEC 42001 nor creates a certification scheme. Software providers, organisations deploying AI in HR or credit decisions, and manufacturers adding AI features to products therefore look for a way to organise inventories, risk and oversight, and the standard offers a management system for that purpose. Where personal data is involved, Act No. 110/2019 Coll. and the Office for Personal Data Protection remain in play. Certificates come from accredited certification bodies, never from Sterling, and ČIA is the national accreditation body whose scope for this standard should be confirmed. Sterling's Frankfurt office builds the inventory, impact assessments and controls, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included in the engagement and 20+ years of experience.
Who needs ISO 42001 in Czechia, and what happens without it
In Czechia the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Czech providers of AI-enabled softwareThe EU AI Act sets harmonised rules for AI systems, and a management system helps organise governance.
- Organisations deploying AI in HR, credit or public servicesDeployers carry their own duties and need inventories, oversight and records.
- Processors and controllers using AI on personal dataAct No. 110/2019 Coll. and the GDPR apply alongside any AI rules.
- Manufacturers and life-science firms adding AI to productsAI features sit within existing product and quality regulation.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 42001 requires a company to prove six things about how it governs the AI it builds or uses.
In Czechia these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 42001 explained →

How long does ISO 42001 certification take in Czechia?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Czechia these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Inventory of AI systems and their uses
- Existing ISO/IEC 27001 or quality system
- Data governance and model lifecycle controls
- Certification body scheduling
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 42001 certification cost in Czechia?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Czechia these factors move both.
- Number of AI systems and use cases in scope
- Impact assessment and control remediation
- Certification body audit fees, quoted separately
- Monitoring and documentation tooling
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 42001 consultants and certification bodies in Czechia
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 42001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Czechia are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Czechia
Choose a certification body accredited for this standard by ČIA, the Czech national accreditation body, or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). Check that the body's accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 42001 hub →
Audit language
Czech is the official language and English is commonly used in business. Agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any language requirement in a contract or a regulator's procedure.
Remote and on-site
Audits are normally on-site with some remote review of AI system documentation, data governance records and tooling.
ISO 42001 in Czechia: questions clients ask
Does the EU AI Act make ISO/IEC 42001 mandatory?
No. Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 lays down harmonised rules on artificial intelligence and does not name ISO/IEC 42001. The standard is a voluntary management system for governing AI. It can organise evidence, but compliance with the Regulation is judged against the Regulation itself, so take advice from counsel on your AI systems.
Who supervises AI in Czechia?
National supervisory arrangements are for the competent Czech authorities to confirm, and none is stated here as a verified fact. The EU Regulation applies across the Union, and data protection questions still go to the Office for Personal Data Protection. Check the current position with counsel before assigning responsibility internally.
How does the GDPR interact with an AI management system?
They apply together. Act No. 110/2019 Coll. adapts Czech law to the GDPR and makes the Office for Personal Data Protection the independent supervisor, so AI systems that use personal data need lawful grounds, notices and security alongside any AI governance. A management system should link its records to those duties.
Which accreditation should the certification body hold?
Accreditation by ČIA or an equivalent body for management system certification. ČIA's own published list names seven standards and ISO/IEC 42001 is not among them, so the scope needs checking. Ask for the accreditation certificate, and compare it with your sector and the AI systems you want covered.
