ISO 27701 certification in Czechia at a glance
Act No. 110/2019 Coll. on personal data processing (zákon o zpracování osobních údajů) is the instrument itself: it applies to the organisations within its scope, and buyers and partners in Czechia ask for evidence that you meet it.
Privacy certification in Czechia has two separate tracks, and ISO/IEC 27701 sits on the voluntary one. Act No. 110/2019 Coll. adapts national law to the GDPR, makes the Úřad pro ochranu osobních údajů the independent authority, and provides that bodies entitled to issue data protection certificates are accredited through the national accreditation body, ČIA. The international standard is a different thing: a privacy extension to an information security management system, and ČIA's own list names ISO/IEC 27001 among its recognised scopes. Processors in hosting, payroll and SaaS, and employers running whistleblowing channels, use it to give customers organised evidence. Certification comes from an accredited body, not from Sterling. From Frankfurt, Sterling extends your existing system, builds records of processing and processor controls, and includes Effivity and Sterling Academy in the engagement.
Who needs ISO 27701 in Czechia, and what happens without it
In Czechia the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Controllers wanting a structured privacy management systemAct No. 110/2019 Coll. and the GDPR set the duties, and the standard organises the controls and records.
- Processors such as SaaS, payroll and hosting providersControllers ask processors for evidence of privacy controls in contracts.
- Organisations already certified to ISO/IEC 27001The privacy extension builds on an existing security management system.
- Employers running internal reporting channelsWhistleblower systems hold sensitive personal data that needs documented handling.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 27701 requires a company to prove six things about how it handles personal data.
In Czechia these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 27701 explained →

How long does ISO 27701 certification take in Czechia?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Czechia these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Existing ISO/IEC 27001 system and its scope
- Records of processing and data-flow mapping
- Processor and international transfer arrangements
- Certification body scheduling
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 27701 certification cost in Czechia?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Czechia these factors move both.
- Processing activities and entities in scope
- Privacy control and documentation remediation
- Certification body audit fees, quoted separately
- Data protection officer resources
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 27701 consultants and certification bodies in Czechia
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 27701 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Czechia are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.
Laws and regulations that drive ISO 27701 in Czechia (3)
| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|
| Act No. 110/2019 Coll. on personal data processing (zákon o zpracování osobních údajů) | The instrument itself The Act adapts Czech law to the GDPR and makes the Office for Personal Data Protection the central administrative authority for personal data protection, acting independently. |
| Accreditation of data protection certification bodies under Act No. 110/2019 Coll. | Framework The Act says bodies entitled to issue data protection certificates are accredited by the accreditation body under the law on accreditation of conformity assessment bodies. |
| ČIA's list of multilateral recognition agreements | Recognition ČIA's own page lists it as an EA MLA signatory for management system certification and shows recognition for certification to ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO/IEC 27001, ISO 22000, ISO 13485, ISO 50001 and ISO 45001. |
Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Czechia
Choose a certification body accredited for this standard by ČIA, the Czech national accreditation body, or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). Check that the body's accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here. The GDPR itself has no general certificate, and ISO/IEC 27701 certification is not a statutory GDPR certification. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 27701 hub →
Audit language
Czech is the official language and English is commonly used in business. Agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any language requirement in a contract or a regulator's procedure.
Remote and on-site
Audits are normally on-site with some remote review of records of processing, notices and privacy tooling.
ISO 27701 in Czechia: questions clients ask
Is ISO/IEC 27701 a GDPR certificate in Czechia?
No. It is a voluntary international standard. Act No. 110/2019 Coll. separately provides that bodies issuing data protection certificates are accredited through the national accreditation body, which is a different statutory route. The Office for Personal Data Protection or your counsel can say whether any scheme applies to you.
Who supervises privacy compliance for a Czech company with this certificate?
The Office for Personal Data Protection, which Act No. 110/2019 Coll. makes the central administrative authority and says acts independently. A certificate does not change its powers. It can help organise policies, records and controls, and the Office's own guidance remains the reference when something goes wrong.
Does ISO/IEC 27701 need ISO/IEC 27001 first?
Typically the two are run together, since the privacy extension builds on an information security management system. ČIA's own page lists ISO/IEC 27001 among its recognised certification scopes, and ISO/IEC 27701 is not named there. Ask the certification body for its accreditation certificate and confirm whether its scope covers the privacy extension.
Why do Czech processors ask for it?
Their customers, as controllers, must choose processors that give sufficient guarantees, and they often ask for evidence beyond a signed contract. Hosting, payroll and SaaS providers use the standard to show organised privacy controls. A customer may still insist on its own audit, so treat the certificate as supporting evidence.
