ESG & sustainability reporting: standards and frameworks

ESG reporting standards set what an organisation discloses about its sustainability impacts, risks and performance, and on what basis. This family holds 24 records: reporting frameworks such as GRI and the ISSB standards, EU rules such as CSRD, scored disclosures such as CDP, ratings such as EcoVadis, and guidance.

What the family covers

What do ESG reporting standards cover, and how do they fit together?

The family holds four kinds of record. Reporting frameworks, the GRI Standards, IFRS S1 and S2 from the ISSB, the SASB Standards, TCFD, the Integrated Reporting Framework and AA1000, set what to disclose and for whom. Regulations, CSRD with the ESRS, the EU Taxonomy, SFDR, EUDR, CBAM, CSDDD and SEBI BRSR in India, make disclosure or due diligence a legal duty for the companies in scope. Scored disclosures, ratings and certifications, CDP, EcoVadis, GRESB, the S&P Global CSA and B Corp, turn answers into a result that investors and customers compare. Guidance and principles, ISO 26000, ISO 32210 and the UN Global Compact, shape the approach without a certificate. Requests come from investors, lenders, regulators and stock exchanges, and from large customers passing their own reporting duties down the supply chain. What connects the family is the data and the materiality judgement. Most frameworks draw on the same emissions inventory, governance facts, policies and indicators, but each reads them differently: the ESRS on a double materiality basis, the ISSB standards from the investor’s view, the GRI Standards through impacts on the economy, the environment and people.

Sterling builds that foundation once and maps it to each disclosure you owe: the materiality assessment, the data and evidence trail, the report or questionnaire, and readiness for assurance where it applies, including engagements under ISAE 3000 and ISAE 3410. You choose Design™, where we develop and your team implements under our expert advice and supervision, or Drive™, where we design and build under your approval, fully managed. Either way, Effivity is included at no additional cost to hold indicators, evidence, owners and deadlines from one reporting cycle to the next. Sterling does not assure, score or rate: the statutory auditor or an independent assurance provider gives the assurance conclusion, and the scheme owner, such as CDP or EcoVadis, gives the score.

FAQs

ESG reporting standards: common questions

Answered by route: legal reporting, voluntary reporting, scores, ratings and guidance.

Which ESG reporting standard should we start with?

Start with the one you are obliged or asked to provide. A company in CSRD scope reports under the ESRS; a company whose regulator or exchange has adopted ISSB-based rules applies IFRS S1 and S2; a supplier asked through CDP Supply Chain or for an EcoVadis rating starts there. With no obligation yet, the GRI Standards suit a first report for all stakeholders, and a greenhouse gas inventory is worth building early because climate disclosures under each of these ask for emissions figures.

Can one set of data meet GRI, ESRS, ISSB and CDP at once?

Largely, yes. Emissions, governance, policies and indicators can be collected once and reused, but each framework applies its own materiality basis and disclosure format, so the outputs differ: a sustainability statement under the ESRS, investor disclosures under IFRS S1 and S2, a GRI content index and a CDP questionnaire response.

Who checks an ESG report, and can it be certified?

None of the main reporting frameworks certifies a report. A CSRD sustainability statement receives limited assurance from the statutory auditor or, where the Member State allows, an accredited independent assurance services provider. ISSB-based disclosures are assured where the jurisdiction requires it, and GRI recommends but does not require external assurance. CDP scores responses from D- to A; EcoVadis issues a scorecard out of 100, with medals that it states are not certifications. ISO 26000 is guidance and is not certifiable.
