SASB Standards client experienceWhat it is
What are the SASB Standards and what are they used for?
The SASB Standards are a set of 77 industry-based standards that identify the sustainability-related matters most relevant to investor decisions in each industry, and specify how to measure and report them. Each one tells a company in a given industry which topics to consider and which metrics show its performance on them, so that two companies in the same industry can be compared on the same basis.
The International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB), set up by the IFRS Foundation, is responsible for them and is maintaining and enhancing them. They sit inside the ISSB's own framework: IFRS S1 requires a company to refer to and consider the applicability of the topics and metrics in the SASB Standards, although it does not require the company to apply them, and the industry-based guidance that accompanies IFRS S2 is derived from them.
Current version. In December 2023 the ISSB amended the SASB Standards to improve their international applicability, replacing jurisdiction-specific references and definitions without significantly altering industries, topics or metrics. Exposure drafts in July 2025 and March 2026 proposed further amendments to twelve priority standards and targeted metric changes in 41 more industries; the ISSB is considering the feedback and has announced no effective date. Report against the version on the SASB Standards Navigator and record which one you used.
Who it is for
Who needs SASB Standards reporting?
No certificate hangs on SASB reporting; the demand comes from the people who read your disclosures. Companies come to Sterling for SASB Standards work from four starting points:
- Investors or lenders ask for industry metrics. Fund managers, banks and rating questionnaires ask for the SASB topics of your industry by name.
- You apply, or will apply, IFRS S1. Where your regulator or exchange has adopted ISSB-based rules, or you choose to apply them, you must consider the SASB topics and metrics when identifying risks and opportunities and deciding what to disclose.
- A parent company or group reporting cycle requires it. Group sustainability teams often ask subsidiaries and joint ventures for SASB metrics on a set template and timetable.
- Customers, tenders or a listing process expect it. Buyers in regulated and capital-intensive sectors, increasingly expect sustainability information that follows a recognised industry framework rather than a list of chosen indicators.
Requirements
What are the main SASB Standards requirements?
Every SASB Standard follows the same build, and each element sets a different task for the reporting team. The list below maps those elements in plain language; your disclosures are checked against the text of the industry standard you apply, metric by metric, during the programme.
- Industry description: confirm that the business models and activities described match your own, and choose the standard, or standards, that fit your revenue and operations.
- Disclosure topics: consider each sustainability-related risk or opportunity the standard names for your industry and decide, with reasons, which are relevant to your investors.
- Metrics: report performance on each relevant topic using the standard's quantitative and qualitative metrics, on the same basis every period.
- Technical protocols: apply the definitions, scope, implementation guidance and presentation rules that sit behind each metric, so the figure means what the reader expects.
- Activity metrics: disclose the measures of scale, such as production or customers served, that let readers normalise your data and compare it with peers.
- Link to IFRS S1 and IFRS S2: where you apply the ISSB Standards, document how the SASB topics and metrics were considered and how the IFRS S2 industry-based guidance was used for climate.
What does useful SASB Standards evidence look like?
An industry mapping that explains why a standard was chosen; a topic assessment with management's decisions and reasons; a data register naming the source system, owner and calculation for each metric; calculation files that follow the technical protocol; notes where a metric was adapted or omitted and why; and a review and approval trail for the published figures. We set these up from the first workshop and hold them in Effivity, so an assurance provider or investor can trace every number back to its source.
Reporting process
How do you report under the SASB Standards?
There is no audit to pass and no certificate at the end. The work is to identify the right standard, gather reliable data and publish disclosures that stand up to questioning. Sterling supports your team through each stage; any assurance conclusion belongs to an independent assurance provider.
- 01Confirm the purpose, the reader and the industry.Establish whether you report voluntarily, for investors, for a group or under ISSB-based rules, and confirm the industry standard or standards that fit your activities.
- 02Gap analysis: compare current data and reporting with the standard. The gap analysis tests existing reports, systems and records against each topic and metric, and agrees owners, sources and dates for what is missing.
- 03Assess the topics and record the decisions.Consider each disclosure topic for relevance to investors, record management's conclusions and reasons, and fix the reporting boundary.
- 04Build the metrics and draft the disclosures.Collect data, calculate each metric to its protocol, add activity metrics and write the explanatory narrative.
- 05Review, approve and prepare for assurance. An internal review of the data trail and a management sign-off, then any assurance engagement your board or regulator requires, and a repeatable annual cycle.
Check the route before you sign. Anyone offering a "SASB certificate" is selling something the ISSB does not issue. Confirm the version of each industry standard on the SASB Standards Navigator at ifrs.org, and where you seek assurance, confirm the independence and qualifications of the assurance provider with the provider and its professional body. Cost
How much does SASB Standards reporting cost?
The effort depends far more on the state of your data than on the length of the standard. What we can promise is a proposal in which every component is visible and nothing is added later.
| Cost component | What affects it |
|---|---|
| Consulting and implementation | The number of industry standards and entities in scope, the topics judged relevant, the metrics to build, existing reporting and how much of the work your team takes on (Design™ or Drive™) |
| Assurance, where sought | The assurance provider's own fees, shown separately, driven by the level of assurance, the metrics in scope and the quality of the workpapers |
| Internal resources and systems | Time from finance, operations, HR and procurement, data extraction from source systems and management time for review and approval |
| Software and learning | Part of the Sterling engagement: Effivity for the reporting programme and Sterling Academy access for your people, with users, courses and access period set out in the proposal |
| Continued support | The annual reporting cycle, changes to the standards as the ISSB amends them and alignment with other frameworks under Sustain™ |
What moves the price
- How many industries your group spans, and how many entities report
- The number of metrics that need new data collection
- Whether data sits in controlled systems or in spreadsheets
- Whether you also report under IFRS S1 and IFRS S2, GRI or CDP
- The publication date and the assurance you plan to obtain
What a Sterling proposal always shows
- Deliverables, responsibilities, assumptions and exclusions, in writing
- Assurance-provider fees identified separately, so the full programme cost is comparable
- Effivity, training and Academy access itemised at no additional cost
- Payment milestones tied to deliverables, not to the calendar
- One all-inclusive proposal. No surprises, ever
Timeline
How long does SASB Standards reporting take?
A first report typically takes three to six months to reach a draft ready for review, measured from the gap analysis. Groups building new data flows across several sites sit at the upper end. Data has to cover the full reporting period, so the calendar sets limits that effort cannot shorten.
| Phase | What determines the pace |
|---|---|
| Scope and gap analysis | How quickly the purpose, industries and entities are agreed, and access to existing reports and data owners |
| Topic assessment | Management availability to consider each topic and sign off the decisions and reasons |
| Data and metric build | Where the data lives, how clean it is and the effort to calculate each metric to its protocol |
| Drafting, review and assurance | Internal review and approval, consistency with the financial report, and any assurance provider's schedule |
If an investor, a group deadline or a listing date drives the timing, tell us at the start. We will say which metrics can be ready and which should be phased in with a disclosed plan.

Effivity · ISO and GRC software, included in every engagement
How Effivity helps you fulfil, automate and simplify the requirements of the SASB Standards.
Every Sterling SASB Standards engagement includes Effivity, the ISO and GRC automation platform built by the Sterling group and used in 50+ countries. Your consultant configures the workspace within the agreed scope, so documents, risks, audits, nonconformities, training records and management review sit beside your metric registers and data owners, the reporting cycle runs in daily work and a reviewer sees live records rather than a folder of spreadsheets. Sterling consulting clients get their Effivity subscription included with the engagement, at no additional cost.

Scope, entities and industry mapping
The reporting boundary, the entities included and the reasons for the industry standards chosen, kept in one register and reviewed when the business changes.
Topic assessment and decisions
Each topic with its relevance assessment, the owner, management's decision and the reasons, so the next cycle starts from a record rather than a memory.
Risks and opportunities
The risks and opportunities linked to each relevant topic, with owners, actions and review dates, feeding the same register the rest of the business uses.
Metric register and data owners
Every metric with its definition, source system, owner, frequency and due date; missing data flagged before the reporting deadline, not after it.
Documents, calculations and versions
Calculation methods, emission factors and procedures under version control with approvals, so each figure can be recalculated the same way next year.
Scale and normalisation data
Production volumes, headcount and other activity measures collected once and reused, so intensity figures and peer comparisons stay consistent.
Internal audit, findings and management review
Reviews of the data trail, findings raised and closed with evidence, and a sign-off record that shows who approved the disclosures and when.
Your own forms, workflows and reports
Data-collection forms, fields, workflows and dashboards adapted to your sites and systems, without code, and shared with other frameworks you report under.
What this means when someone checks
An investor or assurance provider asks why a topic was left out, where a figure came from and who approved it. In Effivity each answer is a record with a date, an owner and the evidence attached, not a search through e-mail the week before publication. After the first report, Sustain™ runs in the same workspace, so next year's cycle starts with last year's data and decisions in place.

The Sterling Promise
What our SASB Standards reporting success guarantee means
We stay with you until your agreed SASB Standards reporting outcome is achieved, supporting implementation, preparation and the resolution of review findings. Clear explanations, practical delivery, included software and employee learning turn the investment into lasting capability rather than a report on a shelf.
The engagement identifies the standards, scope, outcome and responsibilities. Your organisation supplies accurate information and puts the agreed controls into use. Any independent assurance provider forms and retains its own conclusion. Our commitment concerns the agreed reporting support, not a promise of every future investor decision or error-free data.
FAQs
Frequently asked questions about the SASB Standards
Is SASB Standards reporting mandatory?
Not in itself. The ISSB does not make anyone report, and use of the SASB Standards on their own is voluntary. Where a regulator or exchange requires IFRS S1, companies must refer to and consider the SASB topics and metrics, and investors or group owners may make the metrics a condition of their own reporting.
Can we use the SASB Standards without applying IFRS S1?
Yes. Many companies use them on their own to answer investor requests or to structure a sustainability report. The topic assessment and data you build carry straight into IFRS S1 later.
How do we find out which SASB Standard applies to our company?
Compare your business model and main activities with the industry descriptions on the SASB Standards Navigator and choose the closest fit. A group with several distinct businesses may need to review more than one standard; record which you chose, and why, so the decision can be explained and repeated.
Are the SASB Standards changing?
Yes, amendments are in progress. The ISSB consulted in 2025 on nine standards and targeted metric changes in 41 more, and in 2026 on three further standards; it has not announced when any final amendments will take effect.
Can SASB disclosures be independently assured?
Yes, an independent assurance provider can give a conclusion on selected metrics or the full set, at the level you or your regulator choose. Assurance is only as strong as the workpapers behind each figure. Sterling prepares the evidence and does not provide the assurance.
