EcoVadis · Business sustainability ratings

EcoVadis rating consulting for the score your customers require, on evidence that stands up to the analyst.

Get your EcoVadis rating right first time, or lift the one you have. Sterling's expert and experienced consultants review the questionnaire against your real policies, actions, indicators and documents, close the gaps, support the submission and turn the scorecard's improvement areas into the plan for the next cycle, in 60+ countries. EcoVadis is a rating, not a certification: analysts score your sustainability management system from 0 to 100, and a medal or badge follows only from that score. We ensure a successful EcoVadis submission for our clients.

What it is

What is EcoVadis and what is it used for?

EcoVadis is a business sustainability ratings platform. A company registers, answers a questionnaire customised to its size, industry and the countries it operates in, uploads the documents that prove its answers, and receives a scorecard: an overall score from 0 to 100, a score for each of four themes, a percentile rank against every company rated in the previous twelve months, and a list of strengths and improvement areas. The rating measures the quality of the sustainability management system, through its policies, actions and results, not the sustainability of any product. EcoVadis reports more than 150,000 rated companies in 180 countries and describes its methodology as aligned with the UN Global Compact, GRI and ISO 26000.

Its main use is in procurement. Large buyers require a rating when onboarding new suppliers, score it in tenders, write it into contracts, consider it at ordering and monitor it year after year. Sector initiatives such as Together for Sustainability in chemicals or the Responsible Health Initiative in pharmaceuticals share one supplier scorecard among all their members, so one rating answers many customers.

Current methodology. EcoVadis applies its Sustainability Rating Methodology V10.0 from January 2026, with a Medals methodology (V2.0) and a Badges methodology (V1.0) from the same date. Since 2024 medals have been awarded on percentile rank rather than fixed score thresholds; the questionnaire changes as the methodology develops, and a reassessment follows whatever changes were introduced before it began. From 2 July 2026 the EU regulation on the transparency and integrity of ESG rating activities, Regulation (EU) 2024/3005, applies to ESG rating providers in the EU; EcoVadis states that it notified ESMA of its intention to apply for authorisation on 8 July 2026 and publishes a methodology disclosure document for each rating product. EcoVadis explained: themes, criteria, scoring and medals

Who it is for

Who needs an EcoVadis rating?

EcoVadis rates companies of every size, from extra-small to large, in more than 200 industries; the questionnaire is built for the company's profile, not for a minimum scale. Organisations come to Sterling for EcoVadis support from four starting points:

  • A customer has made it a supplier requirement. Buyers require an EcoVadis rating for new suppliers, score it in tenders, write it into contracts and check it at ordering and review. The invitation arrives with a deadline, a required plan and sometimes a minimum score.
  • A sector initiative has invited you. Members of initiatives such as Together for Sustainability or the Responsible Health Initiative share supplier scorecards, so one rating reaches every member, and one weak rating does too.
  • The last scorecard was below the mark. The score missed a customer's threshold, a theme fell under 30 and blocked a medal, or last year's medal is out of reach under the percentile rules. The reassessment is due within twelve months and the improvement areas need owners, evidence and time.
  • The board or an investor wants a recognised ESG benchmark. A rating with a percentile rank is quicker to obtain and easier to explain than a full sustainability report, and can sit beneath GRI or CSRD reporting later without redoing the work.

The benefit is retained customers, access to tenders that require a rating, and a management system that improves on a twelve-month rhythm. The score is decided by EcoVadis analysts on the evidence submitted, which is why the evidence, not the ambition, is where the work goes.

Business benefits

How an EcoVadis rating protects revenue and improves management

A rating pays for itself when it keeps a customer, wins a tender or replaces a dozen bespoke ESG questionnaires with one scorecard. We start from the customers that are asking, then build the evidence so the score reflects what the organisation actually does.

  • Supplier status kept and tenders openedA scorecard that meets the requirements customers write into onboarding, RFP scoring and contracts, shared with unlimited trading partners under a Premium or higher plan.
  • One answer to many questionnairesA single rating shared with every requesting company and every member of a sector initiative, instead of a different survey for each customer.
  • A medal or badge you can displayWhere the score and theme minimums allow, a Platinum, Gold, Silver or Bronze medal, or a Committed or Fast Mover badge, valid for twelve months.
  • A management system that actually improvesImprovement areas turned into a corrective action plan with owners and dates, visible to your customers, and closed before the reassessment.
  • Certificates that count twiceISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 50001, ISO 37001 and similar certificates credited under the Certifications indicator, so the systems you already run lift the rating.
  • Evidence ready for the next obligationPolicies, actions and indicators organised by theme and criterion that can feed GRI reporting, a CSRD value-chain request or an investor questionnaire.

Measure the programme by what it does for the business: customer requirements met, the trend in the overall and theme scores, corrective actions closed before reassessment. A medal is welcome; a lost customer over a missing policy is the outcome to avoid.

Themes, criteria and indicators

What does EcoVadis assess?

EcoVadis has no clauses to conform to. It assesses the adequacy and comprehensiveness of your sustainability management system against 21 criteria in four themes, activating only the criteria material to your industry, size and locations, and scores each active criterion through seven management indicators. The weights are those EcoVadis publishes in its methodology disclosure; each theme is weighted from 1 to 4 for its materiality to your industry.

ElementWhat EcoVadis looks atWhat the evidence looks like in practice
Theme EnvironmentNine criteria: Energy Consumption & Greenhouse Gas Emissions; Water; Biodiversity; Air Pollution; Materials, Chemicals & Waste; Product Use; Product End-of-Life; Customer Health & Safety; Environmental Services & AdvocacyAn environmental policy with quantified objectives, energy and emissions data with a target, waste and chemical controls, an ISO 14001 or ISO 50001 certificate where held, and reported indicators
Theme Labour & Human RightsSeven criteria: Employee Health & Safety; Working Conditions; Social Dialogue; Career Management & Training; Child Labor, Forced Labor & Human Trafficking; Discrimination & Harassment; External Stakeholder Human Rights (EcoVadis spells the theme Labor & Human Rights)A health and safety policy and injury data, working-hours and wage rules, grievance channels, training records, a human rights commitment, an ISO 45001 or SA8000 certificate where held
Theme EthicsThree criteria: Corruption; Anticompetitive Practices; Responsible Information ManagementAn anti-corruption policy and code of conduct, gifts and conflict-of-interest rules, whistleblowing, competition-law guidance, information security controls, ISO 37001 or ISO/IEC 27001 where held
Theme Sustainable ProcurementTwo criteria: Supplier Environmental Practices; Supplier Social PracticesA supplier code of conduct, sustainability clauses in contracts, risk-based supplier assessment with results, and corrective actions agreed with suppliers
Indicator Policies · 20%The company's objectives and commitments for each active criterion, formalised and approvedSigned policies that name the issue, set measurable objectives and cover the whole scope, not a one-line statement of intent
Indicator Endorsements · 5%Formal public commitment to external sustainability initiativesParticipation in the UN Global Compact or a sector charter, evidenced by the commitment letter or listing
Indicator Actions · 40%The measures that put policies into practice and the valid certifications, labels and third-party audits that confirm them; measures carry 60 per cent and certificates 40 per cent of the indicator, scaled by coverage for companies of 1,000 or more employeesProcedures, programmes, training and controls with dated evidence that they operate; certificates within validity; deployment shown across sites and headcount
Indicator Reporting · 14%The quality of the company's reporting on sustainability metricsIndicators for the last period with dates, units and coverage: emissions, energy, water, waste, injuries, training hours, supplier assessments
Indicator 360° Watch · 21%External stakeholder viewpoints: publications from verified sources reflecting positive and negative findings from NGOs, trade unions, government bodies, grievance mechanisms and other third partiesNothing to upload, but a documented response to any public allegation or sanction, showing what was investigated and corrected

What does useful EcoVadis evidence look like?

Documents that carry the company's name or logo, an issue or review date and, for a policy, an approval; within EcoVadis's validity windows, eight years for policies and actions and two years for reported indicators; and uploaded within the limit of 55 documents, with the relevant page marked. EcoVadis states that it does not credit documents created solely for the questionnaire, material copied from another organisation, informal or undated files, or evidence that sits only behind an embedded link. We identify which existing records answer each active criterion, close the gaps with documents your managers will use, and keep them in Effivity so the next reassessment starts from a live system.

EcoVadis documents: what the analysts credit

The rating route

How do you get an EcoVadis rating?

There is no certification body and no audit visit. The company answers the questionnaire on the EcoVadis platform, uploads its evidence, and EcoVadis analysts score it; the scorecard is valid for twelve months and the cycle repeats. Sterling prepares the organisation and the evidence with you; the answers are yours and the score is EcoVadis's.

  1. 01
Confirm the scope, the plan and the deadline.Which entity, group or site is rated, who is asking and by when, which plan the customer expects, and which criteria will be active for your size, industry and countries.
  2. 02
Gap analysis: review the questionnaire against your evidence. The gap analysis walks every active criterion and indicator against your existing policies, actions, indicators and documents, estimates where the score stands and agrees actions, owners and dates.
  3. 03
Close the gaps that move the score.Policies approved with measurable objectives, measures in operation with dated evidence, indicators collected for the last period, supplier controls established, certificates and endorsements brought into the file.
  4. 04
Build the evidence file and answer the questionnaire. Each answer matched to the document that proves it, within the 55-document limit and the validity windows, and the submission reviewed before it goes.
  5. 05
Submit and follow the analysis.EcoVadis typically publishes results within six to eight weeks of submission; analyst queries are answered with you and the scorecard reading is prepared.
  6. 06
Read the scorecard, act and plan the next cycle.Strengths, improvement areas and any 360° Watch findings turned into the corrective action plan your customers can see, with the reassessment planned before the twelve months run out.

Check what is being sold, not only the price. Nobody can guarantee an EcoVadis score or a medal: analysts decide on the evidence, and medals depend on your percentile against every company rated in the previous twelve months. A provider promising Gold, or offering to write your policies for the questionnaire, is selling what EcoVadis states it does not credit. Cost

How much does an EcoVadis rating cost?

Two invoices exist and they should be kept apart: EcoVadis charges the rated company a subscription, priced by company size and plan, and Sterling charges a fixed consulting fee for the preparation. What we promise is a proposal in which every component is visible and nothing is added later.

Cost componentWhat affects it
Consulting and implementationCurrent maturity, the number of active criteria, the sites and entities in scope, the gaps in policies, actions and indicators, and how much of the work your team takes on (Design™ or Drive™)
EcoVadis subscriptionPaid to EcoVadis, by company size and plan. Basic allows sharing inside the EcoVadis network only, without the medal or badge image; Premium, Select and Corporate allow unlimited sharing outside the network, benchmarking and use of the medal or badge. Customers often specify the plan
Internal resourcesTime from the HSE, HR, procurement, compliance and facilities owners to approve policies, collect indicators and locate documents; management time for the objectives and the corrective action plan
Software and learningIncluded in a Sterling engagement: Effivity for policies, actions, indicators, documents and corrective actions, and Sterling Academy access for your people, with users, courses and access period confirmed in the proposal
Continued supportThe annual cycle under Sustain™: corrective actions tracked, indicators collected through the year, the reassessment prepared against the methodology in force

What moves the price

  • Company size band and industry, which set the active criteria and the questionnaire length
  • Number of sites, entities and countries in the scope of the assessment
  • Whether policies, procedures and indicators exist today or must be built
  • The plan and score your customer requires, and the deadline it has set
  • Supplier controls: how many suppliers you have and what assessment exists

What a Sterling proposal always shows

  • Deliverables, responsibilities, assumptions and exclusions, in writing
  • The EcoVadis subscription identified separately, paid to EcoVadis, never marked up
  • Effivity, training and Academy access itemised at no additional cost
  • Payment milestones tied to deliverables, not to the calendar
  • One all-inclusive proposal. No surprises, ever

Timeline

How long does an EcoVadis rating take?

From gap review to a published scorecard usually takes three to five months. Two clocks run: yours, to close the gaps and build the evidence file before the questionnaire deadline, and EcoVadis's, which typically takes six to eight weeks from submission to publication, shorter or longer depending on the company profile. A first rating with policies and indicators to create sits at the long end; a reassessment with a corrective action plan already worked sits at the short end.

PhaseWhat determines the pace
Scope and gap analysisAccess to the theme owners, the customer's requirements and the last scorecard where one exists
Closing the gapsApproval routes for new or revised policies, the time to collect a full period of indicator data, and whether measures must operate for a while before evidence exists
Evidence file and questionnaireNumber of active criteria, the document search across sites, translations, and the questionnaire deadline
EcoVadis analysis and scorecardEcoVadis's queue and any analyst queries; typically six to eight weeks, ending in a scorecard valid for twelve months

If a customer's deadline or a tender date is fixed, share it at the start and we will say what is achievable and which gaps cannot be closed in time. The questionnaire deadline can be extended on request; the customer's patience usually cannot.

Challenges

Common EcoVadis rating challenges

Most disappointing scorecards trace back to five problems. Each has a practical answer.

The company does the work but has no document that proves it.

Analysts score evidence, not effort. We locate the records that already exist, formalise the practices that were never written down, and make sure each document carries the company name, a date and, for a policy, an approval.

Policies were written for the questionnaire and scored nothing.

EcoVadis states that it does not credit documents created solely for the questionnaire or copied from another organisation. Policies are rebuilt as management documents: objectives that mean something to the business, approved by the people accountable and communicated to staff.

One theme drags the whole rating down.

A theme score below 30 blocks any medal whatever the overall score, and Sustainable Procurement is the usual culprit because few mid-sized companies assess their own suppliers. A supplier code, risk-based assessment and a first cycle of supplier evaluation are set up early, since they take longest to evidence.

Indicators exist in someone's spreadsheet, without dates, units or coverage.

Reporting is scored on quality: period, unit, scope and trend. We define the indicators that matter for the active criteria, collect a full period and put them in Effivity, so the next reassessment reads them from the system.

Last year's medal is not reachable this year.

Medals follow percentile rank against every company rated in the previous twelve months, so the bar moves. The plan targets the improvement areas with the most weight and the certificates that lift the Actions indicator, not a number from an old scorecard.

  • Effivity ISO & GRC software

Policies, actions, indicators, documents, supplier assessments and corrective actions run in Effivity from day one, included with the engagement at no additional cost.

  • Training for everyone

Internal auditor training for the people who will audit your sustainability management system, as applicable to your standard, and preferential Sterling Academy access, including complimentary awareness training for your people as part of the engagement.

  • Evidence file and submission support

Each answer matched to its document within the limit and validity rules, the submission reviewed before it goes, and analyst queries answered with you.

  • Scorecard reading and next-cycle plan

The scorecard read with your management, improvement areas turned into the corrective action plan your customers see, and the reassessment planned within the twelve months.

Scores, medals and badges are decided by EcoVadis on the evidence submitted; none is promised.

How we deliver

How Sterling supports your EcoVadis rating

Every EcoVadis engagement runs on Sterling OS™, our delivery operating system: five phases with named deliverables, decision owners and evidence at each stage. Pick the level of support your capacity allows; the method, the software and the accountability do not change.

  1. 01
Design™Guided preparation: your team closes the gaps and builds the evidence file with Sterling's structure, templates, workshops and coaching.
  2. 02
Drive™Fully managed preparation: Sterling consultants take on the agreed documentation, evidence assembly and submission support with your theme owners.
  3. 03
Sustain™After the scorecard: corrective actions tracked, indicators collected through the year, the annual reassessment prepared against the methodology in force, refreshers and new-hire training.
  4. 04
Automate™The management system running in Effivity: policies, actions, indicators, documents, supplier assessments, audits and corrective actions in one workspace.
  5. 05
Revise™Adoption of each EcoVadis methodology update and of each change in your customers' requirements, scope, sites or ownership.

Before work starts we agree the engagement team, the weekly session, the deliverables and the decision owners. Progress is reviewed against those commitments, so gaps show early, not at the questionnaire deadline.

Effivity · EcoVadis evidence software, included in every engagement

How Effivity helps you fulfil, automate and simplify the evidence requirements of the EcoVadis Sustainability Rating Methodology V10.0.

Effivity, the ISO and GRC automation platform built by the Sterling group and used in 50+ countries, is part of every Sterling EcoVadis engagement. Your consultant configures the workspace by theme and criterion, so policies, actions, indicators, supplier assessments, internal audits and corrective actions live in one place with dates, owners and approvals attached; when the questionnaire opens, the evidence comes from a system that has run all year rather than from inboxes in the final week. For Sterling consulting clients the Effivity subscription is included with the engagement, at no additional cost.

Effivity: Context of the Organisation dashboard with issues, interested parties and scope
Effivity · Context of the Organisation dashboard
Environment

Aspects, energy, emissions and waste

Environmental aspects, energy and emissions data by site and period, waste and chemical controls and their objectives, kept with the dates and units the Reporting indicator is scored on.

Labour & Human Rights

Safety, working conditions and training

Hazard and incident records, injury indicators, working-hours and grievance procedures, training plans and completion records, so the safety and training criteria are evidenced from live data.

Ethics

Codes, declarations and controls

The code of conduct with its acknowledgements, gifts and conflict-of-interest declarations, whistleblowing cases and information-security controls, each with the date and owner an analyst looks for.

Sustainable Procurement

Supplier assessment on the record

Supplier code acknowledgements, risk-based supplier assessments, audit findings and corrective actions with suppliers: the criteria most companies can least evidence.

Policies

Approved, versioned, communicated

Each policy with its approval, version, distribution and review date, so the Policies indicator rests on documents that show the company's name, date and signature.

Measures

Actions with evidence of operation

Programmes, procedures, training and controls linked to the criterion they address, with the records that show them operating, and certificates held with their validity dates.

Reporting

Indicators with period, unit and coverage

Emissions, energy, water, waste, injuries, training hours and supplier assessments collected through the year, with the period, unit and scope the analysts credit.

Corrective Action Plan

Improvement areas closed before reassessment

Scorecard improvement areas and customer requests logged as actions with owners, dates and evidence, mirrored to the EcoVadis corrective action plan and tracked to closure.

What this means at the analysis

An EcoVadis analyst sees only what is uploaded: a document per answer, dated, named and within the validity window, and reported indicators with period and unit. In Effivity each answer's evidence is a record that already exists, so the submission is an export rather than a search, and the corrective action plan runs in the same workspace from the day the scorecard is published.

Manufacturing supplier: ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and ISO 37001 as the evidence base for an EcoVadis rating

An EcoVadis rating is commonly the visible end of an integrated programme. In such a programme the environmental, safety and anti-bribery management systems supply the policies, measures, certificates and indicators for three of the four themes; a supplier code of conduct and a risk-based supplier assessment cycle are added for Sustainable Procurement; and the scorecard's improvement areas feed the corrective action process the certified systems already use, so the reassessment, the surveillance audits and the customers' requests draw on one set of evidence.

    How integrated programmes run

Sterling Academy · EcoVadis e-learning

Train every employee for the EcoVadis rating, not just the sustainability lead.

Sterling Academy delivers e-learning for the whole workforce and for the theme owners: video lessons with practice checkpoints, a final exam and a numbered Certificate of Completion for each learner, verifiable online. Sterling consulting clients benefit from preferential course access and special pricing through their Sterling consultant, including complimentary awareness training for their people as part of the engagement.

  • EcoVadis awareness for every employee, so the practices the questionnaire asks about are followed on the floor, not only on paper
  • Practitioner courses for the theme owners in HSE, HR, procurement and compliance who supply the evidence
  • Internal auditor training for the people who will audit the sustainability management system, as applicable to your standard, as part of the engagement
  • Learner progress by department and a training status report as evidence under the Career Management & Training criterion
  • New hires trained as they arrive, so training records are current at reassessment
  • A Sterling consultant reachable when a learner needs one

Why Sterling

Want an EcoVadis rating that holds up? Come to Sterling.

Whether one plant is answering a first invitation or a group is aligning ratings across subsidiaries in several countries, Sterling helps you build one evidence base with clear local ownership. We work through differences in law, language and practice between sites, so group policies are credited everywhere.

Sustainability management in 60+ countries since 2003

Environmental, safety, anti-bribery, information security and social accountability systems implemented for manufacturers, chemical and pharmaceutical suppliers, logistics firms and BPOs, with one engagement team accountable across every country you operate in.

All-inclusive proposal

Consulting, Effivity, training and Academy access in one proposal, with the EcoVadis subscription identified separately and paid to EcoVadis. No surprises, ever.

Evidence your people can maintain

Less documentation and maximum effect: policies managers recognise, indicators collected where the data already is, and a corrective action plan that fits meetings you already hold.

Expert and experienced consultants

Consultants who have advised on management systems across sectors and countries since 2003 and know which document answers which criterion, so the first submission is scored on what the organisation really does.

The Sterling Promise

What our EcoVadis success guarantee means

100%on-time completion · success · 8,100+ client engagements

We stay with you until your agreed EcoVadis outcome is achieved: the gaps closed, the evidence file complete, the questionnaire submitted and the scorecard read into a plan for the next cycle. Clear explanations, practical delivery, included software and employee learning turn the investment into lasting capability rather than a folder built for one deadline.

The engagement identifies the scope, outcome and responsibilities. Your organisation supplies accurate information, approves the policies and objectives and puts the agreed measures into use. Scores, percentile ranks, medals and badges are decided by EcoVadis on the evidence submitted and are not promised; our commitment concerns the agreed preparation and submission support, not a particular score.

After the rating

What happens after your EcoVadis rating?

The scorecard is valid for twelve months from publication, and the work starts the day it arrives. The improvement areas and any 360° Watch findings go into the corrective action plan, which your trading partners can see and add requests to, and a trading partner can ask for a reassessment up to three months before the scorecard expires. The reassessment is answered against the methodology in force at the time, with 20 to 50 per cent of answers pre-filled and the previous documents kept in your library.

Under Sterling OS™ Sustain™ we track the corrective actions, collect the indicators through the year and prepare the reassessment against the current questionnaire, so the next scorecard improves on the last rather than repeating it.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about EcoVadis

Is an EcoVadis rating a certification?

No. EcoVadis rates the quality of your sustainability management system on a 0 to 100 scale from the evidence you submit, and awards medals and badges to companies in the top percentiles. EcoVadis states that medals and badges are not certifications or product labels, do not mean that a company's products or services are sustainable and are not an endorsement by EcoVadis. A certificate is an accredited certification body's decision that a system conforms to a standard; it counts as evidence in the rating, but the two are different things.

How is the EcoVadis score calculated?

Your questionnaire activates the criteria material to your industry, size and locations, drawn from the 21 criteria in the four themes. Each active criterion is scored through seven management indicators with the weights EcoVadis publishes: policies 20 per cent, endorsements 5 per cent, actions 40 per cent (measures and certifications, scaled by coverage for companies of 1,000 or more employees), reporting 14 per cent and the 360° Watch 21 per cent. Theme scores are weighted from 1 to 4 for materiality to your industry, and EcoVadis labels the overall score Insufficient (0 to 24), Partial (25 to 44), Good (45 to 64), Advanced (65 to 84) or Outstanding (85 to 100).

What score do we need for a medal?

Since 2024 there is no fixed score. Medals go to the top 1 per cent (Platinum), 5 per cent (Gold), 15 per cent (Silver) and 35 per cent (Bronze) of companies rated in the previous twelve months, calculated at publication, and a company whose score in any theme is below 30 is not eligible. Below medal level, the Committed badge needs an overall score of at least 45 and the Fast Mover badge a score of 34 to 44 with at least a six-point improvement on the previous assessment within 18 months.

How long is an EcoVadis rating valid?

Twelve months from the publication date, and the same for any medal or badge. A trading partner can request a reassessment up to three months before expiry or once the scorecard has expired, and you can start one yourself if a customer's requirement was missed or new evidence exists. Each reassessment produces a new scorecard with a new publication date.

Which documents does EcoVadis accept?

Documents that show the company's name or logo and an issue or review date, sit within the validity windows (eight years for policies and actions, two years for reported indicators) and fit within the limit of 55 documents per assessment. EcoVadis states it will not credit documents created solely for the questionnaire, material copied from another organisation, informal or undated files, or evidence behind an embedded link.

Do our ISO certificates improve the score?

Yes, within limits. Valid certifications, labels and third-party audits are scored under the Certifications indicator, which carries 40 per cent of the Actions indicator, itself 40 per cent of each theme score; EcoVadis states it recognises more than 1,300 labels and certifications. A certificate does not replace the policy, the measures or the reported indicators for the criteria it covers, and it counts for its own theme: ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 in Environment, ISO 45001 and SA8000 in Labour and Human Rights, ISO 37001 and ISO/IEC 27001 in Ethics.

A customer requires a minimum score and we missed it. What now?

Read the improvement areas by weight, agree with the customer which actions matter to them through the corrective action plan, which they can see and add requests to, close those actions with dated evidence and start the reassessment when the evidence exists rather than at expiry. Sterling's next-cycle plan works this way, with any theme under 30 fixed first if a medal is the goal.

What is the EcoVadis Carbon Scorecard?

A separate rating of your greenhouse gas emissions management system, covering Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, targets, governance, action plans, monitoring and reporting, with maturity levels from Insufficient through Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced to Leader and its own twelve-month validity. It comes with the sustainability rating plans and is what buyers work with through EcoVadis's Carbon Action Manager, also called the Carbon Action Module. Sterling prepares the emissions inventory and the management evidence with you; ISO 14064-1 verification, where required, is a separate engagement.

What do you need to prepare an EcoVadis proposal?

Who is asking and their deadline, your size band and industry, the sites or entities in scope, which certificates you hold, whether you have been rated before and the last scorecard if so, and who owns each theme internally. That is enough for a scoped, all-inclusive proposal; there is no need to register with EcoVadis first.

Before the first call

Prepare a useful EcoVadis readiness brief

You do not need to register with EcoVadis before the first discussion. Bring a short account of who is asking and what exists. Seven questions are enough:

  1. Who is asking for the rating: a customer, a sector initiative, a tender, a parent company or an investor? What plan, score or deadline have they set?
  2. Which entity, group or sites should the assessment cover, and what is the headcount and industry of each?
  3. Have you been rated before? If so, what were the overall and theme scores, the improvement areas and the expiry date?
  4. Which certificates do you hold, and which policies exist for environment, safety, labour, ethics and suppliers?
  5. Which indicators do you already collect, for what period and in which system: emissions, energy, water, waste, injuries, training, suppliers?
  6. How do you select and monitor suppliers today, and is there a supplier code of conduct?
  7. Who owns each theme internally, and who can approve policies and objectives quickly?

With these answers we can scope the work and price it properly. They prepare a discussion; they are not a scored assessment or an estimate of your rating.

Don’t be fooled by certification scams

If it comes with a guaranteed medal, it is not an EcoVadis rating.

EcoVadis analysts score evidence, medals follow percentile rank against every company rated in the previous twelve months, and EcoVadis states it does not credit documents written for the questionnaire. That has not stopped a market in "Gold guaranteed" packages, services that upload borrowed policies, and "EcoVadis certified" claims on websites. They cost less, until the scorecard arrives.

How to choose a credible EcoVadis consultant

  1. Walk away from any guarantee of a score, a medal or a badge. Nobody outside EcoVadis decides them; a percentile cannot be promised in advance, and a theme below 30 blocks a medal whatever the total.
  2. Ask what will be written and by whom. Policies drafted from a template and uploaded under your name are what EcoVadis states it will not credit; the useful work is finding, formalising and approving what you actually do.
  3. Ask how each answer will be evidenced. One dated, named document per answer within the validity windows and the 55-document limit, agreed before submission.
  4. Identify who carries each task, who approves policies, who collects the indicators and what support exists between publication and the reassessment.
  5. Ask what your people will learn and where the evidence will live. No training and no system means the next questionnaire starts from zero again.
  6. Be cautious of "EcoVadis certified" wording and one invoice for the rating and the consulting. The subscription is paid to EcoVadis; a medal is a recognition linked to your recognition page, not a certificate, and claiming certification misleads the customers who asked for the rating.
