How to improve EcoVadis score results: where the points are lost and what wins them back

Where EcoVadis points are lost, indicator by indicator and theme by theme: policies, actions, reporting, 360° Watch and the theme floor, and how to read your scorecard to plan the evidence for the next reassessment.

Key points

  • An EcoVadis score is rebuilt from indicator scores inside each theme, so points are lost in specific places: missing objectives, actions without dated proof, stale indicators, unanswered public findings and one weak theme.
  • Actions carry 40% of every theme score and 360° Watch 21%, so those two usually decide how far a score can rise; Endorsements, at 5%, rarely do.
  • Themes are weighted from 1 to 4 by how material they are to your industry, and a medal needs at least 30 in each of the four themes, so the weakest heavily weighted theme comes first.
  • A new score only appears after a reassessment, and nobody can promise what it will be: EcoVadis analysts decide on the evidence.

Where EcoVadis points are lost: the short answer

If you want to improve EcoVadis score results, stop looking at the overall number and look at how it is assembled. EcoVadis scores four themes, Environment, Labour & Human Rights, Ethics and Sustainable Procurement, and each theme score comes from five weighted indicators: Policies, Endorsements, Actions, Reporting and 360° Watch. Only the criteria material to your size, industry and countries are active, and each is judged through those indicators.

A score is low because, for particular criteria, a policy has no measurable objective, a measure exists but nothing dated shows it working, the indicators stop two years back, or an allegation in the public domain has no documented response.

How the methodology is built is covered in EcoVadis explained: themes, criteria, scoring and medals, and the rules on which files analysts accept sit in EcoVadis documents: what the analysts credit.

How the indicator weights decide where improvement pays

EcoVadis's methodology disclosure for version V10.0, applicable from January 2026, publishes the weight each indicator carries in a theme score. They show where the same effort buys the most.

Indicator and weightHow points are typically lostWhat usually recovers them
Actions · 40%Measures described in the questionnaire but not evidenced; certificates expired or outside the rated scope; for companies of 1,000 or more employees, actions confined to one siteDated records that the measure operates, certificates within validity, and deployment shown across sites and headcount
360° Watch · 21%Findings from NGOs, unions, government bodies or grievance mechanisms left without a responseA documented investigation and correction for each finding, kept ready before the next assessment
Policies · 20%A general statement instead of a policy per active criterion; no objectives; no approval or dateApproved policies that name each issue, set measurable objectives and cover the whole scope
Reporting · 14%Indicators older than the two-year window, without units or coverage, or reported for one site onlyThe last period's figures for the issues that matter to your industry, with dates, units and scope stated
Endorsements · 5%No formal public commitment to an external initiativeA genuine commitment your organisation will keep, evidenced by the commitment letter or listing

Within Actions, EcoVadis splits the indicator into measures (60%) and certificates (40%), and for large companies scales the result by coverage. How certificates such as ISO 14001 or ISO 45001 count is the subject of EcoVadis and your ISO certificates.

Losing points on policies

Policy points are easy to lose and quick to repair. The recurring pattern is one sustainability policy that mentions energy, human rights and bribery in a paragraph each. An analyst looking at a criterion such as Water, Social Dialogue or Anticompetitive Practices wants the commitment for that issue, with an objective that can be measured and an approval that shows management owns it.

The second pattern is a policy that does not reach the whole scope, such as a group code the rated subsidiary never adopted. The third is timing. EcoVadis applies a validity window of eight years to policies and actions.

What does not work is writing policies for the questionnaire. EcoVadis states that it does not credit commitments created solely to satisfy it, or objectives copied from another organisation without evidence of implementation.

Losing points on actions, the heaviest indicator

Most scores that plateau do so here. The questionnaire asks whether a measure is in place; the analyst asks for the document that proves it. A supplier that answers "yes" to supplier sustainability assessments, energy audits or anti-corruption training, and then uploads the procedure rather than the completed assessments, attendance records or audit report, has described an action without evidencing it.

Three things usually close the gap. First, match each claimed measure to a dated record of it happening in the last cycle. Second, bring certificates and third-party audits into the file only where they are valid and cover the rated entity. Third, for companies of 1,000 or more employees, show how far a measure reaches: a training programme at one plant of five earns less than the same programme across all five.

Actions also take time to generate evidence: a supplier code signed last week has produced no supplier assessments yet. Start the next cycle's plan when the scorecard is published, not a month before the deadline.

Reporting and 360° Watch: points lost outside the policy file

Reporting carries 14% of each theme score and looks at the quality of your published or reported metrics. Points go when figures sit in a spreadsheet without a period, a unit or a statement of what they cover, and when they fall outside EcoVadis's two-year validity window for KPI reporting. At a reassessment, metrics are not pre-filled, so a supplier that did not keep collecting through the year starts that part again from nothing.

360° Watch carries 21% and has nothing to upload. EcoVadis considers publications from verified sources, positive and negative, from NGOs, trade unions, government bodies, grievance mechanisms and other third parties. An unanswered sanction or union complaint can cost more than a missing policy. The remedy is a documented response: what was alleged, what was investigated, what was corrected and what now prevents a repeat.

One weak theme and the theme floor

Each theme is allocated a weight between 1 and 4, depending on how material it is for your industry compared with others. A theme that is weighted heavily for your sector moves the overall score far more than one weighted lightly.

There is a second reason to look theme by theme. EcoVadis states that a company is not eligible for a medal if its score is below 30 in any of the four themes. Sustainable Procurement is a common casualty: with only two criteria, Supplier Environmental Practices and Supplier Social Practices, it can look small, yet a supplier with no code of conduct and no supplier assessments can sit below that floor while scoring well elsewhere.

Take a logistics company in the Philippines with a respectable Environment score and a weak Sustainable Procurement score. A supplier code, sustainability clauses in new contracts and a first round of risk-based supplier assessments, properly evidenced, is usually worth more than a fourth environmental procedure. How medals are then awarded on percentile rank is explained in EcoVadis medals and badges: the percentile rules.

How Sterling improves an EcoVadis score

Your scorecard, read indicator by indicator, turned into a plan your managers will run.

Sterling's expert and experienced consultants work from your last scorecard and questionnaire: every active criterion against every indicator, the gaps ranked by theme weight and indicator weight, then policies, measures, indicators and 360° Watch responses closed with the owners who run them, and the evidence file rebuilt for the reassessment. EcoVadis is a rating, not a certification. Sterling prepares the rating submission and the evidence; the platform decides. Effivity, used in 50+ countries, keeps the evidence live between cycles.

Reading your scorecard to plan the next score

Your scorecard lists strengths and improvement areas. The actions you take against them are managed in the Corrective Action Plan on the EcoVadis platform, where each corrective action carries a priority measured by its impact on your scorecard, through the theme and indicator it relates to. That priority is a better starting point than intuition. The plan is visible to your trading partners, although the detailed score breakdown is not.

The score itself does not change as you complete actions. EcoVadis states that updating the results requires a reassessment, which can be requested up to three months before the scorecard expires or after it has expired. Around 20 to 50% of answers are pre-filled, previous documents remain in the library, and the reassessment follows any methodology changes introduced before it begins. The mechanics are covered in EcoVadis reassessment and the corrective action plan.

Be wary of anyone who promises a number: analysts judge the evidence, and a medal also depends on how every company rated in the previous twelve months performed.

Improving an EcoVadis score: questions buyers ask

How can we improve our EcoVadis score quickly?

The quickest gains usually come from approving criterion-specific policies with measurable objectives and matching each claimed action to a dated record, because Policies and Actions together carry 60% of each theme score. The new score appears only after a reassessment.

Which EcoVadis theme should we improve first?

Start with the theme that is both weak and heavily weighted for your industry, and any theme below 30, because a score under 30 in any theme rules out a medal. Your Corrective Action Plan priorities show where EcoVadis sees the largest impact.

Why did our EcoVadis score drop when nothing changed?

A score can fall without any change in practice when documents age out of their validity windows, eight years for policies and actions and two years for reported indicators, when a 360° Watch finding appears, or when the methodology has changed before the reassessment began. A medal can also be lost at the same score, because medals follow percentile rank against all companies rated in the previous twelve months.

Does a public sustainability commitment raise the EcoVadis score?

A formal public commitment to an external initiative counts under the Endorsements indicator, which carries 5% of each theme score. It is worth having when genuine, but it cannot compensate for missing actions or reporting.

Can we answer EcoVadis findings in the 360° Watch?

There is nothing to upload for 360° Watch, but a documented response to a public allegation or sanction, showing what was investigated and corrected, is the evidence to prepare. The indicator carries 21% of each theme score.

Can a consultant guarantee a higher EcoVadis score or a medal?

No. EcoVadis analysts score the evidence, and medals depend on your percentile against every company rated in the previous twelve months, so any guarantee of a score or a medal is a warning sign. A consultant can deliver a well-evidenced submission and a plan that closes the gaps your scorecard names.
