In short

ISO 42001 certification in Thailand at a glance

In Thailand, ISO/IEC 42001 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

No Thai instrument that we found requires ISO/IEC 42001, so demand for an AI management system certificate in Thailand is commercial: enterprise buyers asking software and automation suppliers how AI is governed before it is deployed. The Eastern Economic Corridor's digital cluster names intelligent electronics, automation and robotics, which puts many such suppliers in a promoted sector, and banks and fintechs using models in customer decisions operate within the Bank of Thailand's IT risk framework. Where AI systems use personal data, the Personal Data Protection Act, B.E. 2562 (2019), remains the governing privacy law. Certification comes from an accredited certification body, and the National Standardization Council's recorded scopes do not include ISO/IEC 42001, so check each body's accreditation. Sterling's Manila office builds the AI management system, impact assessment and oversight evidence for Thai clients, remotely or on site, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included in the engagement. Local questions follow.

The need

Who needs ISO 42001 in Thailand, and what happens without it

In Thailand the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Software and AI product companies selling to Thai and overseas enterprisesEnterprise buyers ask for a governed approach to AI before deployment.
  • Banks and fintechs using models in customer decisionsBank of Thailand rules on IT risk and governance apply to the systems those models run on.
  • Electronics, automation and robotics firms in the Eastern Economic CorridorIntelligent electronics and automation sit in EECO's digital cluster.
  • Organisations feeding personal data into AI systemsThe PDPA applies to personal data wherever it is processed.

Requirements

ISO 42001 requirements in Thailand

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 42001 requires a company to prove six things about how it governs the AI it builds or uses.

You know where AI is usedThe AI systems you develop, provide or use are identified, together with the role your organisation plays for each.
Leadership sets the rules for AITop management sets an AI policy and objectives, assigns accountability and provides resources for responsible use.
You assessed AI risks and impactsRisks from AI systems, and their impacts on individuals, groups and society, are assessed before and during use and then treated.
Each AI system is managed through its lifeDesign, data, testing, deployment, monitoring and retirement follow defined processes with records you can show.
Data and third parties are under controlThe quality and origin of data, and suppliers of models or components, are managed against your own requirements.
You monitor, audit and improveAI systems and the management system are monitored, audited internally and reviewed by management, with problems corrected.

In Thailand these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 42001 explained →

How Sterling gets a Thai company certified

How to get ISO 42001 certified in Thailand

One team from the Manila office carries the work from scoping to certificate. Clients across Thailand are served from Sterling's Manila office, on site where the work needs it and remotely otherwise.

  1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.
  2. Gap assessment against ISO/IEC 42001 and the Thai requirements that apply to youControls you already run for your regulators and customers are reused, not rebuilt.
  3. Your system built with your team in EffivityRisks, controls, evidence, incidents and reviews in one live system the auditor can see.
  4. Internal audit, management review and corrective actionsYour internal auditors trained by Sterling; the evidence proven before the certification body arrives.
  5. Certification body stage 1 and stage 2, then surveillanceAn accredited body audits and decides. Sterling supports the audits and the three-year cycle.

Time

How long does ISO 42001 certification take in Thailand?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Thailand these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of AI systems and their use cases
  • Existing information security and data governance controls
  • Impact assessment practice already in place

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 42001 certification cost in Thailand?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Thailand these factors move both.

  • Number and risk level of AI systems in scope
  • Impact assessment and monitoring work to build
  • Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 42001 consultants and certification bodies in Thailand

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 42001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Thailand are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 42001 in Thailand (2)

InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Eastern Economic Corridor — digital clusterMarket driver
Intelligent electronics, automation and robotics are named; no AI management standard is mentioned.
Personal Data Protection Act, B.E. 2562 (2019)Related
Personal data used in AI development and operation falls under the general data protection law; ISO/IEC 42001 is not a legal requirement.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Thailand

Use a certification body accredited for ISO/IEC 42001 by a body within the international mutual recognition arrangements now run by Global ACI (Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated). The NSC scopes recorded for management systems do not list ISO/IEC 42001, so read the certification body's accreditation certificate. No body is named here. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 42001 hub →

Audit language

Audits can be in English or Thai; AI documentation such as model cards and impact assessments is commonly kept in English.

Remote and on-site

Much document review can be remote where the certification body allows it; development and operations environments are sampled on site where needed.

ISO 42001 in Thailand: questions clients ask

Is there a Thai law that requires ISO 42001?

None that we found. Our research located no Thai instrument that requires ISO/IEC 42001, so any demand is commercial, coming from customers and from your own governance needs. Confirm with counsel whether a sector regulator or contract has introduced a duty since this page was checked.

How does the PDPA affect AI projects?

Where an AI system uses personal data, the Personal Data Protection Act is the general law that applies, and the Personal Data Protection Committee oversees it. An AI management system helps document purposes, data sources and oversight, but it does not itself satisfy the Act. Ask your counsel how it applies to your use case.

Which accreditation should an ISO 42001 certification body hold?

Few bodies hold accreditation for ISO/IEC 42001 because it is a recent standard, and the National Standardization Council's recorded scopes do not include it. Ask any certification body for its accreditation certificate, check that the standard is named and that the accrediting body sits within the international arrangements, and ask what its position is if accreditation is still pending.

Which Eastern Economic Corridor cluster covers AI-related firms?

EECO's digital cluster, which it lists as including intelligent electronics, automation and robotics, and defence. The corridor's framework is about investment promotion, so it does not mention ISO/IEC 42001 or require it. Customers and your own risk appetite decide whether to pursue certification.
