ISO 9001 certification in Thailand at a glance

In Thailand, ISO 9001 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

Buyers across Thailand's automotive, electronics and food supply chains tend to ask the same first question of a new supplier: is there a certified quality system? ISO 9001 answers it. No law checked makes the certificate compulsory, and the Board of Investment's Investment Promotion Guide 2025 attaches certification to sector standards such as ISO 22000 and ISO 13485 rather than to ISO 9001, so demand is commercial and sits mostly in the Eastern Economic Corridor's target clusters and in the industrial estates run by IEAT. Certification comes from an accredited certification body; the National Standardization Council of Thailand has ISO 9001 (QMS) recorded in its management systems scope. Sterling, with 20+ years of experience across 8,100+ client engagements in 60+ countries, builds and embeds the system from its Manila office, on site where a plant visit is needed and remotely otherwise, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included in the engagement. Local questions are answered below.

The need

Who needs ISO 9001 in Thailand, and what happens without it

In Thailand the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Auto-parts and electronics manufacturers supplying multinational buyersA certified quality management system is the usual entry ticket to those supply chains, and both sectors sit among the Eastern Economic Corridor's target clusters.
  • Manufacturers tenanting industrial estatesEstate tenants run under IEAT's estate rules and often need one documented system that also carries environmental and safety controls.
  • BOI-promoted producers in food, medical device and pharmaceutical activitiesThe BOI conditions name sector standards, and ISO 9001 is the common base those sector systems are built on.
  • Contractors, logistics firms and service providers bidding for corporate work

Requirements

ISO 9001 requirements in Thailand

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 9001 requires a company to prove six things about how it delivers what customers order.

You know what customers expectYou understand customer and other relevant requirements, and confirm you can meet them before you accept an order or contract.
Leadership sets direction and owns qualityTop management sets the quality policy and objectives, assigns responsibilities and makes sure the system has the people and resources it needs.
Your key processes are defined and controlledWork is planned, documented where it matters and carried out under controlled conditions, including the work you outsource.
You deal with risks before they biteRisks and opportunities that could affect your products, services or customer satisfaction are identified and acted on in proportion.
Problems get fixed at the rootComplaints, defects and nonconformities are recorded, corrected and traced to their cause so the same problem does not return.
You measure, review and improvePerformance and customer satisfaction are monitored, internal audits and management reviews take place, and the results drive improvement.

In Thailand these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 9001 explained →

How Sterling gets a Thai company certified

Time

How long does ISO 9001 certification take in Thailand?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Thailand these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of sites and shifts in scope
  • How much of the system already exists in customer-mandated tools
  • Certification body scheduling around public holidays and the Songkran period

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 9001 certification cost in Thailand?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Thailand these factors move both.

  • Headcount and number of processes in scope
  • Customer-specific requirements to be mapped alongside the standard
  • Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 9001 consultants and certification bodies in Thailand

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 9001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Thailand are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Thailand

Choose a certification body accredited for ISO 9001 by the National Standardization Council (NSC) or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements now run by Global ACI (Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated). NSC's recorded management systems scope includes ISO 9001 (QMS). Check the accreditation certificate for your industry code, and for any buyer-specified body. Audit language

Audits can run in Thai or English; agree the audit and document language with the certification body at application and keep Thai versions of the procedures that shop-floor staff use.

Remote and on-site

Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; plants, warehouses and project sites are normally visited on site.

ISO 9001 in Thailand: questions clients ask

Which Thai body accredits ISO 9001 certification bodies?

The National Standardization Council (NSC), whose office sits in the Thai Industrial Standards Institute, is the accreditation body whose scope is recorded for ISO 9001 quality management certification, together with ISO/IEC 17021-1 and 17021-3. Ask any certification body you shortlist for its accreditation certificate and check that your industry sector is covered.

Is ISO 9001 certification a legal requirement in Thailand?

No instrument checked makes it compulsory. In practice the requirement comes from customers: export-oriented manufacturers and suppliers to multinational buyers are routinely asked for a certificate, and procurement notices set their own criteria. Confirm with the buyer, or with your counsel where a contract is involved, whether a certificate is a condition.

Does Board of Investment promotion require ISO 9001?

Not as a stated condition. The BOI's Investment Promotion Guide 2025 attaches certification to named sector standards, such as ISO 22000, ISO 13485 and an international environmental standard, for particular activities, and none of those conditions names ISO 9001. A quality system often underpins those sector standards anyway. Check your activity's conditions with the BOI.

Do I need Thai-language documentation for ISO 9001?

Controlled documents can be in English, Thai or both, as long as the people using them understand them. Settle the language with the certification body when you apply, and plan for Thai wherever shop-floor operators, a Thai regulator or a Thai customer will read the procedure. The auditor's working language is agreed at the same time.
