ISO 42001 certification in Tanzania at a glance
In Tanzania, ISO/IEC 42001 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
Automated decisions already have a legal hook in Tanzania: section 36 of the Personal Data Protection Act, 2022 lets a person require that significant decisions are not based solely on automated processing, section 33 entitles them to know the logic involved, and the 2023 Collection and Processing Regulations set procedures and impact assessments. ISO/IEC 42001 gives lenders, fintechs, telecoms and software firms a management system for AI: risk and impact assessment, data governance, human oversight and supplier controls. It does not replace the Act, which the Personal Data Protection Commission enforces. SADCAS's recognition does not list ISO/IEC 42001, so certificates come from bodies accredited elsewhere, and only an accredited certification body can certify. Sterling's Nairobi office inventories your AI systems, runs impact assessments and integrates controls with ISO/IEC 27001 and 27701, bringing 8,100+ client engagements in 60+ countries, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included.
Who needs ISO 42001 in Tanzania, and what happens without it
In Tanzania the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Banks, lenders and fintechs using automated decisionsThe Personal Data Protection Act gives people rights concerning decisions based solely on automated processing.
- Telecoms and digital platforms using AI on customer dataAI systems trained on personal data must respect the Act's purpose, security and transfer rules.
- Software and BPO firms supplying AI-enabled services abroadInternational clients increasingly ask suppliers to show AI governance.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 42001 requires a company to prove six things about how it governs the AI it builds or uses.
In Tanzania these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 42001 explained →

The Sterling Promise: 100% on-time completion, 100% success, 8,100+ client engagements.Sterling does not certify. Certification decisions stay with independent bodies.
How long does ISO 42001 certification take in Tanzania?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Tanzania these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number and risk of AI systems in scope
- AI impact assessments and data governance
- Supplier and model provenance controls
- Certification body availability for this newer standard
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 42001 certification cost in Tanzania?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Tanzania these factors move both.
- Number of AI systems and teams
- Data quality and monitoring tooling
- Impact assessment effort
- Certification body fees quoted separately
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 42001 consultants and certification bodies in Tanzania
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 42001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Tanzania are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.
Laws and regulations that drive ISO 42001 in Tanzania (3)
| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|
| Personal Data Protection Act, 2022, section 36 (automated decision making) | The law A data subject may require that decisions significantly affecting them are not based solely on automated processing, and section 33 entitles them to be told the logic involved; ISO/IEC 42001 is not named. |
| Personal Data Protection (Personal Data Collection and Processing) Regulations, 2023 | Regulations Procedures for rights in relation to automated decision making and for data protection impact assessment; no ISO standard named. |
| SADCAS recognition scopes (list dated 31 December 2025) | Context The scopes listed for SADCAS cover ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 22000 and product certification; other management system standards are accredited elsewhere. |
Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Tanzania
Choose a certification body accredited for ISO/IEC 42001 by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). The recognition list dated 31 December 2025 does not show ISO/IEC 42001 among SADCAS's management system scopes, so a certificate used in Tanzania may carry accreditation from another economy; check the accreditation body, the scope and your customer's acceptance before you sign. Audit language
Acts are published with a Kiswahili text and an English version, and bodies such as TBS and the PDPC publish in both languages. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
AI system documentation, impact assessments and controls can be reviewed remotely; development and operations teams are interviewed as the certification body plans.
ISO 42001 in Tanzania: questions clients ask
Does Tanzanian law regulate automated decisions?
Yes, through data protection law. Section 36 of the Personal Data Protection Act lets a person require that significant decisions about them are not based solely on automated processing, section 33 entitles them to know the logic involved, and the 2023 regulations set procedures. Test your AI use with your counsel or the PDPC.
Is ISO/IEC 42001 required in Tanzania?
No law found requires it. ISO/IEC 42001 is a voluntary management system for responsible AI, covering risk, impact assessment, data and supplier controls. It helps you show that automated decisions and personal data use are governed in line with the Personal Data Protection Act, which remains the binding rule.
Who accredits ISO/IEC 42001 certification for Tanzanian organisations?
An accreditation body within the international arrangements that covers the standard. The recognition list dated 31 December 2025 does not show ISO/IEC 42001 among SADCAS's scopes, so certificates come from bodies accredited elsewhere. Because the standard is new, check each body's accreditation status carefully.
How do ISO/IEC 42001, 27001 and 27701 fit together?
They layer. ISO/IEC 27001 secures information, ISO/IEC 27701 adds privacy management, and ISO/IEC 42001 governs how AI systems are designed, used and monitored. Organisations using AI on personal data often integrate all three, so one risk process and one set of supplier controls serve every certificate.
