ISO 42001 certification in Switzerland at a glance
Two Swiss instruments bear on ISO/IEC 42001. Not one of them names it. So why do buyers in Switzerland keep asking for the certificate?
Swiss regulators have not waited for a dedicated AI statute to say the existing rules apply. The FDPIC states that the Federal Data Protection Act is technology-neutral and directly applicable to AI-supported data processing, and advises manufacturers, providers and users to plan new technology so that affected individuals keep the greatest possible control over their personal data. Banks adopting AI work within FINMA Circular 2023/1 on ICT and operational risk. ISO/IEC 42001 is named in none of these texts, but it gives an organisation a management system to inventory AI systems, assess risk and impact, assign oversight and improve. ICT and digital is a core industry for Switzerland Global Enterprise, so customers in that ecosystem ask suppliers how AI is governed. A certificate is voluntary and issued by an accredited certification body. Sterling's Frankfurt office helps Swiss organisations build the system and prepare for audit, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.
Who needs ISO 42001 in Switzerland, and what happens without it
In Switzerland the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Swiss companies deploying AI that processes personal dataThe FDPIC states the FADP is directly applicable to AI-supported data processing.
- AI developers and product providersThe FDPIC advises manufacturers, providers and users to ensure affected individuals keep control over their personal data when planning new technologies.
- ICT and digital firms selling AI-based servicesICT and digital is a core industry for Switzerland Global Enterprise, and customers ask how AI is governed.
- Banks and insurers adopting AIFINMA Circular 2023/1 covers ICT and operational risk, and AI use sits inside those risks.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 42001 requires a company to prove six things about how it governs the AI it builds or uses.
In Switzerland these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 42001 explained →

The Sterling Promise: 100% on-time completion, 100% success, 8,100+ client engagements.Sterling does not certify. Certification decisions stay with independent bodies.
How long does ISO 42001 certification take in Switzerland?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Switzerland these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number and risk level of AI systems in scope
- Inventory and data lineage already available
- Impact assessment and oversight processes
- Certification body availability for a newer standard
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 42001 certification cost in Switzerland?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Switzerland these factors move both.
- Number of AI systems and use cases
- Depth of model documentation and testing to build
- Certification body fees quoted separately from consulting
- Integration with ISO/IEC 27001 and ISO/IEC 27701
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 42001 consultants and certification bodies in Switzerland
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 42001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Switzerland are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Switzerland
Use a certification body accredited for this standard by the Swiss Accreditation Service (SAS) or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its accreditation scope has been verified. ISO/IEC 42001 is a newer management-system standard, so confirm that the certification body holds accreditation for it before engaging. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 42001 hub →
Audit language
German, French, Italian and English are all used in Swiss business; agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any language requirement in a tender, a regulator's correspondence or a customer contract.
Remote and on-site
Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion; development, data and operations teams in scope are normally interviewed on-site or by video.
ISO 42001 in Switzerland: questions clients ask
Does Switzerland have a specific AI law that ISO 42001 satisfies?
The relevant Swiss position today is the data protection regime: the FDPIC states that the FADP is directly applicable to AI-supported data processing. ISO/IEC 42001 is not named and does not substitute for legal compliance. Watch for developments with your counsel before treating any certificate as a legal safeguard.
Does the FADP apply to our use of generative AI tools?
Where personal data is processed, yes. The FDPIC calls the Act technology-neutral and directly applicable, and the FADP's duties on transparency, security and impact assessment attach to the processing itself. A management system helps you inventory uses and control risks; counsel can map specific tools.
Who certifies an ISO 42001 AI management system in Switzerland?
An accredited certification body, not Sterling. Because the standard is newer, check that the body's accreditation scope from the Swiss Accreditation Service or an equivalent body already includes ISO/IEC 42001, and ask for evidence in writing before you start the audit.
Can ISO 42001 help a Swiss bank govern AI?
It can give a structure for inventory, risk, oversight and improvement. FINMA Circular 2023/1 deals with ICT and operational risk and does not name ISO/IEC 42001, so supervisory expectations remain FINMA's to set. A certified system supports evidence but does not settle what FINMA expects.
