In short

ISO 14001 certification in Switzerland at a glance

Two Swiss instruments bear on ISO 14001. Not one of them names it. So why do buyers in Switzerland keep asking for the certificate?

Environmental compliance in Switzerland is checked twice, once in the law and once in the tender. The Public Procurement Act has contracting authorities award contracts only to tenderers that comply with environmental law at the place of performance, and the Energy Act ties the refund of the grid surcharge to a target agreement with the Confederation on energy efficiency, with the cantons regulating agreements with large consumers. Neither text names ISO 14001, so the standard works as a way of organising evidence rather than as a legal requirement. Pharma, biotech, food and the mechanical, electrical and metal industries are all focus industries for Switzerland Global Enterprise, and each has customers who ask how sites manage their environmental aspects. Certification is issued by a certification body, preferably one accredited by the Swiss Accreditation Service. Sterling's Frankfurt office supports Swiss organisations from aspects register and legal-requirements review to internal audit, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.

The need

Who needs ISO 14001 in Switzerland, and what happens without it

In Switzerland the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Contractors bidding for public work in SwitzerlandThe Public Procurement Act has authorities award contracts only to tenderers that comply with environmental law at the place of performance.
  • Energy-intensive manufacturers in the mechanical, electrical and metal industriesThe Energy Act ties the refund of the grid surcharge to target agreements on energy efficiency, which pushes large consumers to manage their environmental aspects systematically.
  • Pharma, biotech and food producersSwitzerland Global Enterprise names these as focus industries, and site-level environmental management is part of how they present themselves to partners.
  • Large consumers dealing with cantonal energy rulesThe cantons issue rules on agreements with large consumers on energy efficiency targets.

Requirements

ISO 14001 requirements in Switzerland

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 14001 requires a company to prove six things about how its activities affect the environment.

You know your environmental impactsYou have identified how your activities, products and services interact with the environment and which of those impacts are significant.
You know the rules that applyEnvironmental laws, permits and other commitments that apply to you are identified, and you check regularly that you meet them.
Leadership commits to protecting the environmentTop management sets an environmental policy that commits to preventing pollution and meeting obligations, with objectives to deliver it.
Significant impacts are under controlOperations linked to significant impacts are planned and controlled, taking a life-cycle view of what you buy, make and deliver.
You are ready for an incidentPotential environmental emergencies such as spills or releases are identified, and the response is planned and tested where practicable.
You track performance and improveEnvironmental performance is monitored, compliance is evaluated, and the system is audited and reviewed by management to improve.

In Switzerland these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 14001 explained →

How Sterling gets a Swiss company certified

Time

How long does ISO 14001 certification take in Switzerland?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Switzerland these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of sites and significant environmental aspects
  • Status of legal-requirements register and permits
  • Energy and waste data already collected
  • Certification body scheduling around the Swiss summer holiday period

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 14001 certification cost in Switzerland?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Switzerland these factors move both.

  • Number of sites and employees in scope
  • Complexity of aspects, permits and contractors
  • Certification body fees quoted separately from consulting
  • Combination with ISO 50001 or ISO 45001 work

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 14001 consultants and certification bodies in Switzerland

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 14001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Switzerland are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Switzerland

Use a certification body accredited for this standard by the Swiss Accreditation Service (SAS) or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its accreditation scope has been verified. Edition and transition details: ISO 14001 hub →

Audit language

German, French, Italian and English are all used in Swiss business; agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any language requirement in a tender, a regulator's correspondence or a customer contract.

Remote and on-site

Document review can be remote at the certification body's discretion; sites with environmental aspects such as emissions, waste or chemicals are normally visited on-site.

ISO 14001 in Switzerland: questions clients ask

Does a Swiss public tender require ISO 14001?

Not as such. The Public Procurement Act has the contracting authority award a contract only to tenderers that comply with environmental law where the work is done, and each tender defines how compliance is shown. ISO 14001 can be one way to evidence systematic management, but only if the tender accepts it; read the criteria.

Is ISO 14001 mentioned in the Swiss Energy Act?

No. The Energy Act links the refund of the grid surcharge to a target agreement with the Confederation to raise energy efficiency, with regular reporting, and the cantons regulate agreements with large consumers. ISO 14001 is not named. A certified system can help you organise the data such agreements require, subject to the specific terms.

Which body can issue an ISO 14001 certificate in Switzerland?

Any certification body can offer one, but accreditation is what gives it weight. Check that the body holds SAS accreditation, or accreditation from a body within the international arrangements, for ISO 14001 and for the industry sector you work in. Sterling helps you prepare and has no role in awarding the certificate.

Do cantons set their own rules that affect environmental management?

For energy, yes in part. The Energy Act directs the cantons to issue rules on agreements with large consumers on efficiency targets and to give advantages for concluding and meeting them. Other environmental permits vary by canton and site, so check the rules of the canton where each facility operates with your counsel or the authority.
