In short

ISO 27701 certification in Switzerland at a glance

One Swiss instrument bears on ISO/IEC 27701. It does not name the standard. So why do buyers in Switzerland keep asking for the certificate?

Privacy management in Switzerland now has legal weight: the revised FADP, in force since 1 September 2023, asks controllers and processors to keep a record of processing, guarantee data security appropriate to the risk, carry out impact assessments for high-risk processing and notify the FDPIC of qualifying breaches. The Ordinance on Data Protection Certification adds an optional route in which accredited bodies certify management systems, products, services and processes, though it does not name ISO/IEC 27701. The FDPIC also lists the GDPR among the legal bases it works with, so groups serving people in the EU often run one privacy system for both regimes. ISO/IEC 27701 extends an information security management system with privacy controls and is certified by a certification body, preferably one accredited by the Swiss Accreditation Service. Sterling's Frankfurt office helps Swiss organisations map processing, assign roles and prepare for audit, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.

The need

Who needs ISO 27701 in Switzerland, and what happens without it

In Switzerland the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Swiss controllers with large or sensitive data setsThe FADP asks for a record of processing, data security appropriate to the risk and impact assessments for high-risk processing.
  • Processors and SaaS providersA controller must satisfy itself that its processor can guarantee data security, and processors are asked for evidence of their privacy management.
  • Companies wanting an independent privacy benchmarkThe Ordinance on Data Protection Certification allows accredited bodies to certify management systems, products, services and processes.
  • Groups that serve people in the EU as well as SwitzerlandThe FDPIC lists the GDPR among the international legal bases, and many groups manage both regimes in one privacy system.

ISO 27701 requirements in Switzerland

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 27701 requires a company to prove six things about how it handles personal data.

You know whose data you hold and whyYou know what personal data you process, for which purposes and on what basis, and whether you act as controller, processor or both.
Privacy has an ownerManagement assigns responsibility for privacy and sets objectives, so everyone who handles personal data knows their role.
You assessed the privacy risksRisks to the people whose data you process are assessed and treated, including when new products and processes are designed.
People can exercise their rightsRequests to access, correct or delete data, and other individual rights, run through a defined and timely process.
Sharing and suppliers are controlledDisclosures, transfers and processors are governed by agreements and checks, so data is used only as agreed.
You can demonstrate itRecords of processing, notices and decisions are kept, and the privacy system is audited and reviewed like any management system.

In Switzerland these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 27701 explained →

How Sterling gets a Swiss company certified

Time

How long does ISO 27701 certification take in Switzerland?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Switzerland these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of processing activities, systems and processors in scope
  • Existing ISO/IEC 27001 system and its maturity
  • Impact assessment and breach procedure maturity
  • Certification body scheduling

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 27701 certification cost in Switzerland?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Switzerland these factors move both.

  • Scope of entities and processing activities
  • Remediation needed in notices, contracts and security
  • Certification body fees quoted separately from consulting
  • Combination with ISO/IEC 27001 certification

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 27701 consultants and certification bodies in Switzerland

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 27701 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Switzerland are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Switzerland

Use a certification body accredited for this standard by the Swiss Accreditation Service (SAS) or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its accreditation scope has been verified. ISO/IEC 27701 builds on an information security management system, so certification bodies usually expect ISO/IEC 27001 to be in place or audited together. Certification does not on its own show compliance with the FADP. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 27701 hub →

    Audit language

German, French, Italian and English are all used in Swiss business; agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any language requirement in a tender, a regulator's correspondence or a customer contract.

    Remote and on-site

Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion; processing sites and key systems in scope are normally visited.

ISO 27701 in Switzerland: questions clients ask

Is ISO 27701 the same as a Swiss data protection certificate under the DPCO?

No. The Ordinance on Data Protection Certification sets its own accreditation and programme requirements, and it does not name ISO/IEC 27701. The ISO standard is an international privacy management benchmark. Ask your certification body and counsel which scheme your customers recognise before choosing.

Does ISO 27701 make my company compliant with the FADP?

No certificate does that on its own. The FADP's duties, such as records of processing, security appropriate to the risk and notification of qualifying breaches to the FDPIC, remain yours. A privacy management system helps you meet and evidence them. For a view on compliance, take advice from counsel.

Do I need ISO 27001 before ISO 27701?

Usually you need it in place or audited together. ISO/IEC 27701 extends an information security management system with privacy controls, so certification bodies typically expect that foundation. A combined audit can save effort for Swiss organisations that need both, and your chosen body can confirm its own requirements.

Does ISO 27701 help with both the FADP and the GDPR?

It can serve as a common structure. The FDPIC lists both the Swiss legislation and the GDPR among its legal bases, and the two regimes have different texts, so the certificate does not equal compliance with either. Counsel can advise whether the GDPR applies to your activities involving people in the EU.
