ISO 13485 certification in Switzerland at a glance
Two Swiss instruments bear on ISO 13485. Not one of them names it. So why do buyers in Switzerland keep asking for the certificate?
Swissmedic is the authority behind medical device rules in Switzerland, and the Medical Devices Ordinance of 1 July 2020 applies the requirements of Regulation (EU) 2017/745 by reference, including quality management system duties for economic operators. Manufacturers abroad must name an authorised representative domiciled in Switzerland, importers carry their own obligations, and Swissmedic designates the conformity assessment bodies that carry out conformity assessment. ISO 13485 is not named in the ordinance text, yet it is the quality system standard written for the sector, and buyers, designated bodies and distributors ask for it. Medical technology is one of the focus industries described by Switzerland Global Enterprise. A certificate is issued by a certification body, preferably one accredited by the Swiss Accreditation Service, and is separate from conformity assessment of the device. Sterling's Frankfurt office supports Swiss and foreign device makers with gap assessment, design control, risk management and audit preparation, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.
Who needs ISO 13485 in Switzerland, and what happens without it
In Switzerland the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Medical device manufacturers selling in SwitzerlandThe Medical Devices Ordinance applies the EU Medical Device Regulation's requirements by reference, including quality management system duties, under the oversight of Swissmedic.
- Foreign manufacturers needing a Swiss authorised representativeThe Ordinance requires a manufacturer in another country to give a written mandate to an authorised representative domiciled in Switzerland.
- Importers and distributors of medical devicesImporters must run storage, transport and quality management arrangements and cooperate with the manufacturer and authorities.
- Component and contract manufacturers in the medtech clusterSwitzerland Global Enterprise lists medical technology as a focus industry, and device makers push quality requirements to suppliers.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 13485 requires a company to prove six things about making medical devices that are safe and work as intended.
In Switzerland these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 13485 explained →

How long does ISO 13485 certification take in Switzerland?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Switzerland these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Device classes and product families in scope
- Design and development records already held
- Supplier controls and sterilisation or software processes
- Designated body or certification body scheduling
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 13485 certification cost in Switzerland?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Switzerland these factors move both.
- Number of sites and device families
- Depth of risk management and design documentation to build
- Certification body fees quoted separately from consulting
- Extra work for software, sterile or implantable devices
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 13485 consultants and certification bodies in Switzerland
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 13485 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Switzerland are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Switzerland
Use a certification body accredited for this standard by the Swiss Accreditation Service (SAS) or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its accreditation scope has been verified. An ISO 13485 certificate is separate from conformity assessment by a body designated under the Medical Devices Ordinance, which is decided by the regulator and the designated body. Audit language
German, French, Italian and English are all used in Swiss business; agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any language requirement in a tender, a regulator's correspondence or a customer contract.
Remote and on-site
Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion; manufacturing, cleanroom and warehouse sites in scope are normally visited on-site.
ISO 13485 in Switzerland: questions clients ask
Does the Swiss Medical Devices Ordinance require ISO 13485?
The text does not name ISO 13485. It applies the quality management system requirements of the EU Medical Device Regulation to economic operators and presumes conformity where designated technical standards are met, as Swissmedic sets out. Whether ISO 13485 is the route you take depends on your device and conformity route, so confirm with your regulatory counsel.
Who decides whether my Swiss medical device conforms?
Conformity assessment is a regulatory matter, not part of ISO 13485 certification. Swissmedic designates conformity assessment bodies that meet its requirements, and a designated body performs the assessment where the device class calls for one. An ISO 13485 certificate from an accredited body is a separate document with a different purpose.
Do I need a Swiss representative to sell a device from abroad?
Usually, if you are the manufacturer and are located in another country. The Ordinance defines the authorised representative as a person domiciled in Switzerland who has accepted a written mandate from the foreign manufacturer. Details of tasks and exceptions sit in the Ordinance itself, so read it with your regulatory adviser.
Which accredited body certifies a medical device quality system in Switzerland?
Pick a certification body accredited by SAS, or by a body in the international arrangements, whose scope names ISO 13485 and your device sector. The SAS list shows each body's scope. The certificate stays separate from device conformity assessment, and Sterling prepares the quality system without issuing certificates.
