ISO 17025 accreditation in Switzerland at a glance

One Swiss instrument bears on ISO/IEC 17025. It does not name the standard. So why do buyers in Switzerland keep asking for accreditation?

Laboratory results only carry weight if the laboratory can show it is competent, and in Switzerland that recognition comes from the Swiss Accreditation Service. SAS, part of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs, assesses and accredits testing laboratories, inspection bodies and certification bodies against the relevant international standards, and publishes the list of accredited bodies. Accreditation is governed by the Accreditation and Designation Ordinance, and the food legislation illustrates why results matter: HACCP-based procedures are validated and verified with tests against microbiological criteria where appropriate. Medical technology, biotech-pharma, food and the mechanical, electrical and metal industries are focus industries for Switzerland Global Enterprise, and each depends on calibration and testing. ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation is therefore granted by SAS, not issued by Sterling. Sterling's Frankfurt office helps laboratories define scope, validate methods, estimate measurement uncertainty and prepare for assessment, with Effivity software and Sterling Academy training included with the engagement.

The need

Who needs ISO 17025 in Switzerland, and what happens without it

In Switzerland the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Calibration and testing laboratoriesSAS assesses and accredits testing laboratories, inspection bodies and certification bodies on the basis of the relevant international standards, and publishes the list of accredited bodies.
  • Quality-control laboratories in medtech, pharma and life sciencesSwitzerland Global Enterprise lists medical technology and biotech-pharma as focus industries, and customers and notified or designated bodies look at laboratory competence.
  • Food and environmental testing laboratoriesFood is a focus industry and the food ordinances rely on microbiological criteria and verification testing, so reliable laboratory results matter.
  • Laboratories serving industrial customersMechanical, electrical and metal manufacturers commission calibration and testing, and many ask for accredited results.

Requirements

ISO 17025 requirements in Switzerland

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 17025 requires a laboratory to prove six things about its competence and the results it reports.

You are impartialCommercial, financial or other pressures do not influence results, and risks to impartiality are identified and managed.
Staff are competent and authorisedEach person who performs, reviews or reports work is qualified, trained, monitored and authorised for those tasks.
Equipment is calibrated and traceableEquipment is fit for purpose and calibrated, with measurement results traceable to recognised references.
Methods are validated or verifiedMethods suit the work, are validated where needed or verified before use, and measurement uncertainty is evaluated.
Results are checked and reported properlyQuality control and proficiency testing confirm validity, and reports state results clearly, accurately and without ambiguity.
The management system worksComplaints, nonconforming work, risks, internal audits and management review run under a documented management system.

In Switzerland these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 17025 explained →

Time

How long does ISO 17025 accreditation take in Switzerland?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Switzerland these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of methods and measurement ranges in the scope
  • Validation and uncertainty data already available
  • Proficiency testing and inter-laboratory comparison results
  • SAS assessor scheduling

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 17025 accreditation cost in Switzerland?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the accreditation body’s fees, which are quoted separately. In Switzerland these factors move both.

  • Scope size and number of methods
  • Equipment calibration and reference standards
  • SAS accreditation and assessment fees, quoted separately
  • Staff competence records and training

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 17025 consultants and assessors in Switzerland

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; the accreditation body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 17025 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Switzerland are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Switzerland

Laboratory competence is recognised by accreditation, not certification. The Swiss Accreditation Service (SAS) assesses the laboratory against ISO/IEC 17025 and accredits it for a defined scope; neither Sterling nor an ISO certification body accredits laboratories. SAS is a member of European co-operation for Accreditation, and its scopes are listed under the Global ACI arrangement. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 17025 hub →

    Audit language

SAS works in German, French, Italian and English; agree the assessment language and the language of the quality manual with SAS at application, bearing in mind that accredited reports may be read by foreign customers.

    Remote and on-site

Document review can be remote; technical assessment of methods, equipment and witnessed tests takes place at the laboratory.

ISO 17025 in Switzerland: questions clients ask

    Who accredits laboratories in Switzerland?

The Swiss Accreditation Service (SAS), part of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs, is the national accreditation body. It assesses testing laboratories, inspection bodies and certification bodies against the relevant international standards and publishes its list of accredited bodies. Sterling prepares your laboratory but does not accredit it.

Is ISO 17025 accreditation mandatory for Swiss laboratories?

Not in general. Accreditation is voluntary unless a regulation, customer or tender requires it. The food ordinances, for example, speak of validation and testing without making accreditation the test. Check the specific rule or contract that applies to your laboratory's results, and ask the authority if it is unclear.

    Is ISO 17025 a certificate?

No. It is an accreditation, which attests technical competence for a stated scope rather than conformity of a management system. SAS grants it after assessing methods, equipment, staff and records. An ISO 9001 certificate from a certification body is a different thing and does not prove technical competence.

Does SAS accreditation get recognised abroad?

That depends on the arrangement. SECO states that SAS is a member of European co-operation for Accreditation and links to the SAS scopes under the Global ACI arrangement. Recognition by a foreign customer or regulator is theirs to decide, so ask them whether SAS-accredited results are accepted for your scope.
