ISO 22301 certification in South Korea at a glance
Korea Accreditation Board, business continuity management system scheme refers to ISO 22301, yet none of the South Korean instruments checked makes it compulsory. Buyers in South Korea ask for it anyway.
Business continuity certification in South Korea is voluntary, yet several duties point organisations toward it. The Electronic Financial Transactions Act has financial companies and electronic financial business entities appoint a chief information security officer responsible for preventing electronic financial transaction accidents, and the Network Act's national certification is directed at the stability and reliability of information and communications networks. Neither names ISO 22301. The Korea Accreditation Board lists a business continuity management scheme based on ISO 22301 among its accreditation schemes, although the standard does not appear in its international recognition table, so ask a certification body which accreditation backs its certificate. Financial institutions, telecom and cloud providers, manufacturers with just-in-time customers, and logistics and port operators are typical applicants. Sterling's Tokyo office prepares the business impact analysis, strategies, plans and exercise evidence, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement. Sterling does not certify.
Who needs ISO 22301 in South Korea, and what happens without it
In South Korea the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Banks, insurers and electronic financial business entitiesThe Electronic Financial Transactions Act has the chief information security officer responsible for preventing electronic financial transaction accidents and taking measures against them.
- Telecommunication, data-centre and cloud operatorsThe Network Act's national certification is directed at the stability and reliability of information and communications networks.
- Manufacturers with just-in-time customersFree Economic Zones such as Gyeonggi and Busan Jinhae host automobile and machinery parts makers whose customers depend on continuity of supply.
- Port, logistics and shipbuilding operatorsBusan Jinhae and Gwangyang Bay name port logistics among their core activities, where a disruption stops flows for many customers.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 22301 requires a company to prove six things about how it keeps operating when something goes wrong.
In South Korea these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 22301 explained →

How long does ISO 22301 certification take in South Korea?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In South Korea these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number of critical services and sites in scope
- Business impact analysis and recovery strategy maturity
- Exercise and test records available
- Certification body scheduling around the Seollal and Chuseok holiday periods
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 22301 certification cost in South Korea?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In South Korea these factors move both.
- Number of sites, services and dependencies in scope
- Recovery capability the gap analysis calls for
- Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
- Integration with ISO/IEC 27001 work
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 22301 consultants and certification bodies in South Korea
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 22301 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in South Korea are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in South Korea
Use a certification body accredited for ISO 22301 by the Korea Accreditation Board (KAB), whose scheme list includes it, or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). KAB's recognition table does not list ISO 22301, so ask the body which accreditation its certificates rest on and check the scope. No body is named here unless its accreditation scope has been verified. Edition and transition details: ISO 22301 hub →
Audit language
Agree the audit language and the language of plans and exercise records with the certification body at application; Korean and English are both used in financial and technology companies.
Remote and on-site
Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion; recovery sites, operations centres and exercises in scope may be observed on-site.
ISO 22301 in South Korea: questions clients ask
Does South Korean law require ISO 22301?
No law reviewed here names it. The Electronic Financial Transactions Act assigns the chief information security officer responsibility for preventing electronic financial transaction accidents, and the Network Act's certification targets network stability, but neither cites ISO 22301. Certification is a voluntary way to evidence continuity capability; ask your regulator or counsel what they expect.
Which accreditation backs an ISO 22301 certificate?
The Korea Accreditation Board lists a business continuity management scheme based on ISO 22301 among its accreditation schemes. Its international recognition table does not include it, so ask the certification body which accreditation covers your certificate, and check the scope on the accreditation body's own directory before you rely on it with an overseas customer.
Who owns continuity in a financial company?
The Electronic Financial Transactions Act has each financial company or electronic financial business entity appoint a chief information security officer responsible for the technology security behind electronic financial business, including preventing accidents and taking measures against them. A continuity system gives that officer a framework, but governance should be agreed with your own board and regulator.
How does continuity management connect to the national ISMS?
The Network Act's national certification covers an information security management system for the stability and reliability of information and communications networks, so recovery planning sits close to it. Entities that must hold the national certification can reuse risk, asset and incident work for a continuity system, though the two certificates remain separate.
