ISO 9001 certification in South Korea at a glance
Korea Accreditation Board, what accreditation covers refers to ISO 9001, yet none of the South Korean instruments checked makes it compulsory. Buyers in South Korea ask for it anyway.
Korea's national standard for quality management mirrors the international one: the Korea Accreditation Board describes third-party certification as attesting that a management system conforms to ISO 9001 or its national counterpart KS Q 9001, and it accredits the certification bodies that make that judgement against ISO/IEC 17021. ISO 9001 heads KAB's recognition table within the international arrangements, and KAB's scheme list pairs it with the aerospace KS Q 9100 and telecommunications TL 9000 schemes. In public procurement, the Public Procurement Service publishes evaluation criteria for each bid on KONEPS, so any certificate requirement comes from the individual notice rather than from a blanket rule. Manufacturers in the Free Economic Zones, ICT firms and exporters usually need this standard first. Sterling's Tokyo office prepares the quality system and evidence, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement, while an accredited certification body issues the certificate.
Who needs ISO 9001 in South Korea, and what happens without it
In South Korea the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Manufacturers in the Free Economic ZonesBusan Jinhae, Gwangyang Bay and Daegu Gyeongbuk name parts, materials and machinery among their key industries, and a quality management system is the base for those supply chains.
- Subcontractors to automotive and aerospace customersKAB's scheme list pairs ISO 9001 with KS Q 9100, and the IATF and aerospace schemes both sit on a quality management base.
- ICT, software and service firmsInvest Korea lists information and communication technology among Korea's industries, and a certified system gives buyers evidence of a controlled delivery process.
- Businesses bidding for public workKONEPS publishes each bid's evaluation criteria, so any certificate requirement comes from the individual notice.
- Exporters selling to overseas customersKAB's recognition table lists ISO 9001 among the scopes it holds within the international arrangements.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 9001 requires a company to prove six things about how it delivers what customers order.
In South Korea these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 9001 explained →

How long does ISO 9001 certification take in South Korea?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In South Korea these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number of sites and processes in scope
- Maturity of existing procedures and records
- Customer or tender deadlines
- Certification body scheduling around the Seollal and Chuseok holiday periods
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 9001 certification cost in South Korea?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In South Korea these factors move both.
- Headcount and number of sites in scope
- Number of processes and outsourced activities
- Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
- Integration with ISO 14001, ISO 45001 or sector schemes
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 9001 consultants and certification bodies in South Korea
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 9001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in South Korea are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in South Korea
Use a certification body accredited for this standard by the Korea Accreditation Board (KAB) or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its accreditation scope has been verified. Edition and transition details: ISO 9001 hub →
Audit language
Agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application; many Korean companies keep procedures in Korean, and an overseas customer may ask for English.
Remote and on-site
Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; production and service sites in scope are normally visited on-site.
ISO 9001 in South Korea: questions clients ask
Is KS Q 9001 different from ISO 9001?
KAB names them side by side. It describes third-party certification as attesting that a quality management system conforms to ISO 9001 or its national standard KS Q 9001, with accredited certification bodies meeting ISO/IEC 17021 making that judgement. If a customer cares which designation appears on the certificate, ask it before you apply.
Will winning public work depend on holding ISO 9001?
It can, but only when a particular bid says so. Bid information on KONEPS, including technical specifications and evaluation criteria, is published for each opportunity, and nothing on the Public Procurement Service's page makes a certificate a general condition. Read each notice, and treat certification as a competitive advantage rather than an entry ticket.
How does ISO 9001 connect to sector schemes like KS Q 9100?
KAB's scheme list shows sector schemes alongside the base standard, for example ISO 9001 with KS Q 9100 for aerospace and with TL 9000 for telecommunications. In practice an ISO 9001 system is the foundation, and the sector scheme adds its own requirements on top. Build the base once, then extend it rather than running parallel systems.
Is a KAB-accredited ISO 9001 certificate accepted abroad?
It is designed to be. KAB lists ISO 9001 among the management-system scopes it holds within the international recognition arrangements, which is meant to let one accredited certificate be accepted in many markets. Acceptance is still your customer's decision, so confirm it in advance for contracts where the certificate is a condition.
