ISO 17025 accreditation in Norway at a glance
In Norway, ISO/IEC 17025 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
Laboratories in Norway earn recognition through accreditation, not certification, and the route runs through Norsk akkreditering. This governmental body, established by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries to support safe products and market access, accredits testing and calibration laboratories against ISO/IEC 17025. It states that it has signed EA's agreements covering calibration and testing laboratories and is a member of ILAC, so results can travel across the EEA and beyond. Its public register, updated daily, lists accredited laboratories by technical field, from chemical analysis and microbiology to dimension measurement. Sterling's Enschede office prepares laboratories for assessment: method validation, measurement uncertainty, traceability, proficiency testing and the quality system around them, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement. The accreditation decision remains with Norsk akkreditering.
Who needs ISO 17025 in Norway, and what happens without it
In Norway the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Testing laboratories in food, environment, materials and chemical analysisNorsk akkreditering's register groups testing laboratories by technical field, from chemical and microbiological analysis to dimension measurement.
- Calibration laboratories supporting industry measurementsThe EA agreements signed by Norsk akkreditering cover calibration and testing laboratories.
- Laboratories whose customers and authorities want recognised resultsNorsk akkreditering has signed the EA and ILAC arrangements that support acceptance of results across borders.
- In-house industrial and R&D laboratories seeking recognitionAccreditation gives their results standing with customers and regulators.

Take the ISO/IEC 17025 readiness checkISO 17025 requirements in Norway
Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 17025 requires a laboratory to prove six things about its competence and the results it reports.
In Norway these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 17025 explained →

How long does ISO 17025 accreditation take in Norway?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Norway these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Scope of tests or calibrations and the number of methods
- Method validation and measurement uncertainty work
- Proficiency testing and interlaboratory comparison history
- Staff competence records and equipment traceability
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 17025 accreditation cost in Norway?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the accreditation body’s fees, which are quoted separately. In Norway these factors move both.
- Number of methods and technical fields in scope
- Reference equipment and calibration costs
- Accreditation body fees quoted separately from consulting
- Integration with an existing quality system
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 17025 consultants and assessors in Norway
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; the accreditation body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 17025 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Norway are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Norway
Accreditation, not certification: ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation is granted by Norsk akkreditering, the Norwegian national accreditation body, for a defined scope of tests or calibrations. It states that it has signed the EA multilateral agreements for calibration and testing laboratories and is a member of ILAC, and EA evaluates it at intervals of at most four years. Audit language
Norwegian and English are both workable for audits; agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any language clause in a tender or customer contract.
Remote and on-site
Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion; production, office and service sites are normally visited.
ISO 17025 in Norway: questions clients ask
Who accredits laboratories to ISO/IEC 17025 in Norway?
Norsk akkreditering, the national accreditation body, a governmental body established by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries under EU Regulation 765. It accredits laboratories and several other conformity assessment bodies. Unlike management-system certification, laboratory accreditation is granted by the accreditation body itself, not by a separate certification body.
Is Norsk akkreditering recognised internationally for testing and calibration?
It says so. Norsk akkreditering states that it has signed EA's multilateral agreements covering calibration and testing laboratories, is evaluated by EA at intervals of at most four years, and is a member of ILAC and a signatory to its arrangements. That supports acceptance of Norwegian results in other EEA and international markets.
Can I see which Norwegian laboratories are accredited?
Yes. Norsk akkreditering keeps a public register of accredited laboratories, updated daily, which can be searched alphabetically or by accreditation number and filtered by technical field such as chemical analysis, microbiological analysis or dimension measurement. Check the scope against the exact test or calibration you need rather than relying on the laboratory's name alone.
Is ISO/IEC 17025 a certificate or an accreditation in Norway?
It is an accreditation. The laboratory demonstrates competence for a defined scope of tests or calibrations and Norsk akkreditering grants accreditation, which differs from a management-system certificate issued by a certification body. The scope matters more than the logo, because accreditation covers only the methods and ranges listed.
