In short

PCI DSS compliance in Maldives at a glance

One Maldivian instrument bears on PCI DSS. It does not name the standard. So why do buyers in Maldives keep asking for evidence of it?

Card payments flow through front desks, restaurants, spas and booking engines at every Maldivian resort, and through the banks and payment firms that acquire and process them. PCI DSS, maintained by the PCI Security Standards Council, sets the security requirements for anyone who stores, processes or transmits cardholder data. Compliance is validated by a Qualified Security Assessor or by a self-assessment questionnaire, as the payment brands and your acquirer require; no Maldivian body issues a certificate. The Maldives Monetary Authority oversees payment systems under the National Payment System Act, although the Act does not name PCI DSS. Scoping is the hard part: reducing the cardholder data environment through segmentation or tokenisation saves effort everywhere else. Sterling's Mumbai office maps payment flows, closes gaps and prepares evidence for validation, with Effivity tracking requirements and remediation across properties.

The need

Requirements

PCI DSS requirements in Maldives

Strip away the vocabulary and PCI DSS asks any business that stores, processes or transmits card data to comply in six areas.

You know where card data livesThe cardholder data environment is scoped, data flows are mapped and the environment is segmented where possible.
Networks are protectedNetwork security controls restrict traffic to and from systems that handle card data, and configurations are hardened.
Stored data is minimised and protectedOnly the card data you need is kept, sensitive authentication data is not retained after authorisation except under issuer rules, and the rest is protected.
Access is restricted and authenticatedAccess to card data is limited to people who need it, with unique IDs and multi-factor authentication where required.
Systems are logged and testedActivity is logged and reviewed, vulnerabilities are scanned and patched, and penetration testing is carried out.
Policies and people keep it runningSecurity policies, staff awareness, vendor management and incident response keep controls working between assessments.

In Maldives these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: PCI DSS explained →

Time

How long does PCI DSS compliance take in Maldives?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Maldives these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Scope of the cardholder data environment and network segmentation
  • Number of payment channels and outlets
  • Remediation of gaps before validation

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does PCI DSS compliance cost in Maldives?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and any external assessor’s fees, which are quoted separately. In Maldives these factors move both.

  • Size and complexity of the cardholder data environment
  • QSA or self-assessment route
  • Security tooling such as logging and scanning

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

PCI DSS consultants and assessors in Maldives

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; your regulators, customers and auditors then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers PCI DSS and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Maldives are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive PCI DSS in Maldives (2)

    InstrumentHow it treats the standard
    PCI Security Standards CouncilScheme rule
The Council maintains PCI DSS and lists qualified security assessors; the payment brands and acquirers set who must validate and how.
National Payment System Act (Law No. 8/2021)Does not name the standard
The MMA oversees payment systems under the Act; card security for participants follows the brands' programmes.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Maldives

PCI DSS compliance is validated by a Qualified Security Assessor or by a self-assessment questionnaire, as the payment brands and your acquirer require; there is no certificate from a Maldivian body. Ask your acquirer which level and validation route apply. Edition and transition details: PCI DSS hub →

    Audit language

Dhivehi is the national language and Acts are published in it, while regulator websites and many Gazette bid notices are in English; audits commonly run in English with interviews in Dhivehi where staff prefer it. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.

    Remote and on-site

Scoping and much evidence review can be remote; assessors normally visit card processing environments on-site where the validation route requires it.

PCI DSS in Maldives: questions clients ask

Do Maldivian resorts need PCI DSS?

If they accept card payments, yes, through their acquirer's requirements. The acquirer and the payment brands decide the merchant level and whether a self-assessment or an assessment by a Qualified Security Assessor applies. Ask your acquirer which route applies to your properties.

Does the MMA enforce PCI DSS?

The National Payment System Act gives the MMA oversight of payment systems but does not name PCI DSS. The standard is enforced through the card brands and acquirers that set merchant and service provider obligations. Ask the MMA about any payment security rules it applies to your licence.

What is the hardest part of PCI DSS for a resort group?

Scoping. Card data can travel through front desks, outlets, spa systems, booking engines and remote islands, so mapping and reducing the cardholder data environment through segmentation or tokenisation is where most time goes. A smaller environment means fewer requirements to evidence.

    Who validates PCI DSS compliance?

A Qualified Security Assessor listed by the PCI Security Standards Council, or the organisation itself through a self-assessment questionnaire, as the brands and acquirer require. Your acquirer tells you which of the two applies to your business. Sterling prepares the environment and evidence but does not validate compliance.
