In short

ISO 17025 accreditation in Italy at a glance

Ministerial decree 13 June 2017, n. 282 (as reported in Accredia's tender guide) requires ISO/IEC 17025 for the organisations it covers. Most Italian buyers ask for it anyway.

Calibration of speed-measurement equipment is a good example of why Italian laboratories accredit. A ministerial decree of 13 June 2017, reported in Accredia's tender guide, requires initial and periodic calibration by laboratories operating to ISO/IEC 17025 and accredited by Accredia or by another signatory accreditation body. Accredia is Italy's single national accreditation body, with departments for testing laboratories and calibration laboratories, and it covers the European and international mutual recognition arrangements for those activities. There is no ISO 17025 certificate: accreditation is granted for a defined scope of methods. Sterling does not accredit. Sterling's Frankfurt office helps industrial test houses, calibration providers and in-house laboratories across Italy prepare the quality manual, validation, uncertainty and proficiency-testing evidence, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included.

The need

Who needs ISO 17025 in Italy, and what happens without it

For some organisations in Italy it is a legal requirement. For most, the question comes from a buyer, a regulator or a partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Calibration laboratoriesA ministerial decree requires speed-measurement equipment to be calibrated by laboratories operating to ISO/IEC 17025 and accredited by Accredia or a signatory body.
  • Testing laboratories serving manufacturers, food and environment clientsCustomers and tender specifications ask for accredited test reports.
  • In-house laboratories of manufacturersAccreditation shows that internal results can be relied on externally.
  • Laboratories bidding for public contractsAccredited conformity assessments can feature in tender specifications and award criteria.

ISO 17025 requirements in Italy

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 17025 requires a laboratory to prove six things about its competence and the results it reports.

You are impartialCommercial, financial or other pressures do not influence results, and risks to impartiality are identified and managed.
Staff are competent and authorisedEach person who performs, reviews or reports work is qualified, trained, monitored and authorised for those tasks.
Equipment is calibrated and traceableEquipment is fit for purpose and calibrated, with measurement results traceable to recognised references.
Methods are validated or verifiedMethods suit the work, are validated where needed or verified before use, and measurement uncertainty is evaluated.
Results are checked and reported properlyQuality control and proficiency testing confirm validity, and reports state results clearly, accurately and without ambiguity.
The management system worksComplaints, nonconforming work, risks, internal audits and management review run under a documented management system.

In Italy these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 17025 explained →

Time

How long does ISO 17025 accreditation take in Italy?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Italy these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of test or calibration methods in scope
  • Method validation and measurement uncertainty records
  • Proficiency testing history
  • Assessor availability

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 17025 accreditation cost in Italy?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the accreditation body’s fees, which are quoted separately. In Italy these factors move both.

  • Number of methods and locations in scope
  • Equipment calibration and traceability
  • Accredia fees quoted separately from consulting

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 17025 consultants and assessors in Italy

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; the accreditation body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 17025 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Italy are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

ISO 17025 in Italy: questions clients ask

    Who accredits laboratories in Italy?

Accredia. It is Italy's single national accreditation body, and its testing-laboratory and calibration-laboratory departments handle accreditation against ISO/IEC 17025. Accredia's tender guide adds that an Italian laboratory accredits with the national body designated under Regulation (EC) No 765/2008. Contact Accredia early to confirm the scope you intend to apply for.

Is there an ISO 17025 certificate?

No. A laboratory is accredited, not certified, for a defined scope of tests or calibrations after assessors review its management system and witness its technical work. In Italy that is done by Accredia. Sterling prepares the quality manual, method validation and uncertainty records but accredits nothing, so treat any offer of an ISO 17025 certificate with care.

Which Italian rule requires accredited calibration of speed-measurement equipment?

Ministerial decree 13 June 2017, n. 282. As reported in Accredia's tender guide, it requires initial and periodic calibration of speed-measurement instruments by laboratories operating to ISO/IEC 17025 and accredited by Accredia or by another signatory accreditation body. Contracting authorities should check any further rules for the equipment they procure.

Is Italian laboratory accreditation recognised abroad?

Yes, within the arrangements Accredia belongs to. Its international-role page lists the European multilateral agreement and the international mutual recognition arrangement it covers for testing and calibration under ISO/IEC 17025, which is what lets accredited results travel across borders. Check the receiving market's own acceptance rules before relying on a report there.
