ISO 13485 certification in Indonesia at a glance
In Indonesia, ISO 13485 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
Indonesia's Ministry of Health is the first authority a medical device maker answers to. Its Directorate General of Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices certifies the quality management systems of producers under Cara Pembuatan Alat Kesehatan yang Baik (CPAKB) and of distributors under Cara Distribusi Alat Kesehatan yang Baik (CDAKB), as part of pre-market and post-market control. The ministry's own description of those programmes does not name ISO 13485, yet manufacturers who export, or who supply multinational customers, are usually asked for the international standard as well. Building one system that meets both saves duplicated procedures: design and risk management, supplier control, validation, traceability, complaint handling and corrective action are common ground. ISO 13485 certification is issued by a certification body accredited for the standard, while CPAKB and CDAKB remain with the ministry. Sterling's Jakarta office prepares manufacturers and distributors for both assessments, with Effivity software and Sterling Academy training included. Indonesian questions are answered below.
Who needs ISO 13485 in Indonesia, and what happens without it
In Indonesia the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Medical device manufacturersThe Ministry of Health certifies producers' quality management systems under CPAKB.
- Medical device distributorsDistributors are certified under CDAKB.
- Manufacturers exporting devicesExport markets and overseas customers commonly expect ISO 13485.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 13485 requires a company to prove six things about making medical devices that are safe and work as intended.
In Indonesia these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 13485 explained →

How long does ISO 13485 certification take in Indonesia?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Indonesia these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Device classification and whether design is in scope
- Risk management and technical documentation available
- Supplier and sterilisation controls
- Alignment with CPAKB or CDAKB inspection
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 13485 certification cost in Indonesia?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Indonesia these factors move both.
- Number of sites and device families
- Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
- Validation work (process, software, sterilisation)
- Aligning CPAKB/CDAKB and ISO 13485 documentation
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 13485 consultants and certification bodies in Indonesia
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 13485 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Indonesia are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Indonesia
Use a certification body accredited for this standard by Komite Akreditasi Nasional (KAN) or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its accreditation for Indonesia has been verified. Edition and transition details: ISO 13485 hub →
Audit language
Audits are conducted in Bahasa Indonesia or English; agree the audit and document language with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; operational sites are normally visited on-site.
ISO 13485 in Indonesia: questions clients ask
Is ISO 13485 the same as CPAKB?
No. CPAKB is the Ministry of Health's quality management system certification for medical device producers, whereas ISO 13485 is the international standard, certified by an accredited body. The ministry's page does not name ISO 13485, so treat them as related but separate routes.
Do distributors need ISO 13485?
Distributors are certified under CDAKB, the Ministry of Health's distribution scheme, so ISO 13485 is optional for them unless their customers ask for it. Check the buyer's contract before adding a second certification alongside the one the ministry expects. The ministry scheme remains the baseline for a distributor, and any extra certification should answer a real customer need.
Who issues the ISO 13485 certificate?
A certification body issues it, and you should pick one accredited by Komite Akreditasi Nasional (KAN) or by another body within the IAF MLA. Check that the accreditation scope covers ISO 13485 and your device sector, since no body is recommended here without verified Indonesian accreditation.
