In short

ISO 42001 certification in Egypt at a glance

In Egypt, ISO/IEC 42001 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

Few topics have moved from curiosity to customer questionnaire as quickly as artificial intelligence. Egyptian software houses, fintechs and outsourcing firms now face enterprise buyers asking how models are governed, tested and monitored. ISO/IEC 42001 gives an auditable answer: an AI management system covering inventory, impact assessment, data governance, validation and oversight. The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology's site presents a National AI Strategy and Responsible AI material, though none of it is shown here as requiring the standard, and where AI handles personal data Law No. 151 of 2020 still applies. Global ACI's entry for the Egyptian Accreditation Council does not list this newer standard, so ask certification bodies about their accreditation. Sterling's Dubai office helps build the AI inventory, impact assessments and governance records, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.

The need

Who needs ISO 42001 in Egypt, and what happens without it

In Egypt the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Software and data companies building AI productsEnterprise customers ask how models are governed, tested and monitored before they procure.
  • Banks, fintechs and insurers using AI in decisionsScoring, fraud detection and automated decisions draw questions from supervisors and customers.
  • Outsourcing firms deploying AI in service deliveryOverseas clients want to know how AI affects quality and data handling.
  • Healthcare and diagnostics providersAI-assisted analysis calls for clear accountability and validation.
  • Organisations aligning with Egypt's national AI directionThe Ministry's site presents a national AI strategy and responsible AI material.

ISO 42001 requirements in Egypt

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 42001 requires a company to prove six things about how it governs the AI it builds or uses.

You know where AI is usedThe AI systems you develop, provide or use are identified, together with the role your organisation plays for each.
Leadership sets the rules for AITop management sets an AI policy and objectives, assigns accountability and provides resources for responsible use.
You assessed AI risks and impactsRisks from AI systems, and their impacts on individuals, groups and society, are assessed before and during use and then treated.
Each AI system is managed through its lifeDesign, data, testing, deployment, monitoring and retirement follow defined processes with records you can show.
Data and third parties are under controlThe quality and origin of data, and suppliers of models or components, are managed against your own requirements.
You monitor, audit and improveAI systems and the management system are monitored, audited internally and reviewed by management, with problems corrected.

In Egypt these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 42001 explained →

How Sterling gets an Egyptian company certified

One team from the Dubai office carries the work from scoping to certificate. Clients across Egypt are served from Sterling's Dubai office, on-site where the work needs it and remotely otherwise.

  1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.
  2. Gap assessment against ISO/IEC 42001 and the Egyptian requirements that apply to youControls you already run for your regulators and customers are reused, not rebuilt.
  3. Your system built with your team in EffivityRisks, controls, evidence, incidents and reviews in one live system the auditor can see.
  4. Internal audit, management review and corrective actionsYour internal auditors trained by Sterling; the evidence proven before the certification body arrives.
  5. Certification body stage 1 and stage 2, then surveillanceAn accredited body audits and decides. Sterling supports the audits and the three-year cycle.

Time

How long does ISO 42001 certification take in Egypt?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Egypt these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Inventory of AI systems and their purposes
  • Impact and risk assessment methods to establish
  • Data governance and model validation records
  • Certification body availability for a new standard

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 42001 certification cost in Egypt?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Egypt these factors move both.

  • Number of AI systems and business units in scope
  • Testing, monitoring and documentation tooling
  • Certification body audit fees, quoted separately from consulting
  • Combining with ISO/IEC 27001 and ISO/IEC 27701

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 42001 consultants and certification bodies in Egypt

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 42001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Egypt are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 42001 in Egypt (3)

InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Ministry of Communications and Information Technology — AI pagesContext
The Ministry's site lists a National Council for Artificial Intelligence, a National AI Strategy and Responsible AI material; these are policy pages, and none is shown here as requiring ISO/IEC 42001.
Egyptian Accreditation Council (EGAC) recognition entriesAccreditation
Global ACI's entry for EGAC does not list ISO/IEC 42001, a newer standard, among its management-system entries, so ask the certification body which accreditation backs the certificate.
Personal Data Protection Law, Law No. 151 of 2020, and the Personal Data Protection CenterRelated
Where AI processes personal data, Law No. 151 of 2020 and the Center's permit system apply; ISO/IEC 42001 is voluntary and does not replace them.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Egypt

Use a certification body accredited for ISO/IEC 42001 by the Egyptian Accreditation Council (EGAC) or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. Global ACI's entry for EGAC does not list ISO/IEC 42001, a newer standard, among its management-system entries, so ask which accreditation backs an AI management system certificate and whether the certification body is yet accredited for it. The accredited certification body decides, not Sterling. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 42001 hub →

Audit language

Arabic is the official language and English is common in business; agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and say early if shop-floor interviews will run in Arabic.

Remote and on-site

Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion; model development, data and oversight records can often be reviewed remotely, while operational sites using AI in processes are normally visited.

ISO 42001 in Egypt: questions clients ask

Does Egypt require ISO/IEC 42001?

No requirement is shown. The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology's site lists a National AI Strategy and Responsible AI material as policy, not as a certification mandate. Customers and group parents are the usual source of demand. Check the Ministry's current guidance and your contracts before treating the standard as an obligation.

Can I get an accredited ISO/IEC 42001 certificate in Egypt yet?

The Global ACI listing for the Egyptian Accreditation Council does not include this newer standard. Ask any certification body whether it is accredited for ISO/IEC 42001, by whom and for which scope. Some bodies accredited elsewhere may be ready first, and your customer's acceptance matters more than where the body sits.

What is an AI impact assessment?

A structured look at who an AI system affects, what could go wrong and how the organisation would notice and respond: bias, errors, privacy, safety and misuse. The standard expects one at planned points. Auditors test whether findings changed design or controls rather than sitting in a file.

How does ISO/IEC 42001 relate to data protection?

They overlap where AI uses personal data, but differ in purpose: the standard governs AI systems, whereas Law No. 151 of 2020 and the Personal Data Protection Center govern personal data. Certification does not replace permits or licences. Map both for any system that profiles or decides about people, and ask counsel about gaps.
