ISO 27701 certification in Egypt at a glance
In Egypt, ISO/IEC 27701 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
Privacy teams in Egypt now work with a statute and a regulator: Law No. 151 of 2020 and the Personal Data Protection Center, whose portal issues permits and licences and certifies Data Protection Officers. The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology describes the Law as in line with international practice, especially the GDPR, which is where ISO/IEC 27701 comes in. The standard extends ISO/IEC 27001 with privacy controls for controllers and processors. It is voluntary, it does not replace Egyptian permits, and Global ACI's entry for the Egyptian Accreditation Council does not list it, so ask each certification body which accreditation backs its certificate. Outsourcing firms serving overseas clients, banks, insurers and healthcare providers are the usual candidates. Sterling's Dubai office helps build records of processing, notices, rights procedures and processor agreements, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.
Who needs ISO 27701 in Egypt, and what happens without it
In Egypt the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Organisations preparing for permits and licences under the data protection LawThe Personal Data Protection Center issues permits and licences, and a privacy information management system gives structure to records and controls behind an application.
- Outsourcing and BPO firms processing data for overseas clientsForeign clients ask processors to show privacy controls beyond security alone.
- Banks, fintechs and insurersCustomer data volumes are high and several regimes overlap.
- Healthcare and pharmaceutical firmsPatient and trial data call for documented privacy management.
- Organisations also working under the GDPRThe standard maps to the GDPR, so one system can serve two regimes.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 27701 requires a company to prove six things about how it handles personal data.
In Egypt these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 27701 explained →

How long does ISO 27701 certification take in Egypt?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Egypt these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Whether ISO/IEC 27001 is already in place
- Mapping personal data flows and processors
- Privacy notices, consent and rights procedures to build
- Certification body scheduling around the Eid periods
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 27701 certification cost in Egypt?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Egypt these factors move both.
- Number of processing activities, systems and entities in scope
- Privacy tooling and remediation
- Certification body audit fees, quoted separately from consulting
- Adding the standard to an existing ISO/IEC 27001 audit
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 27701 consultants and certification bodies in Egypt
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 27701 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Egypt are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.
Laws and regulations that drive ISO 27701 in Egypt (3)
| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|
| Personal Data Protection Law, Law No. 151 of 2020, and the Personal Data Protection Center | Related Law No. 151 of 2020 and the Center's permit and licence system govern personal data; ISO/IEC 27701 is voluntary and does not replace them, and the portal lists no organisation-wide certificate. |
| Egyptian Accreditation Council (EGAC) recognition entries | Accreditation Global ACI's entry for EGAC does not list ISO/IEC 27701 among its management-system entries, so ask the certification body which accreditation backs the certificate. |
| Ministry of Communications and Information Technology — alignment with international practice | Context The Ministry describes the Law as in line with international practice, especially the GDPR, which is the regime ISO/IEC 27701 is most often mapped against. |
Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Egypt
Use a certification body accredited for ISO/IEC 27701 by the Egyptian Accreditation Council (EGAC) or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. Global ACI's entry for EGAC does not list ISO/IEC 27701 among its management-system entries, so ask the certification body which accreditation backs an ISO/IEC 27701 certificate and whether the Center, your customer or your regulator accepts it. The accredited certification body decides, not Sterling. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 27701 hub →
Audit language
Arabic is the official language and English is common in business; agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and say early if shop-floor interviews will run in Arabic.
Remote and on-site
Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion; processing sites and data centres in scope are normally visited, while records of processing, notices and consent can be reviewed remotely.
ISO 27701 in Egypt: questions clients ask
Does ISO/IEC 27701 give Egyptian legal compliance?
No. Law No. 151 of 2020 and the Personal Data Protection Center's permits and licences are separate regulatory requirements, and the portal lists no organisation-wide compliance certificate. ISO/IEC 27701 certification is voluntary evidence of a privacy management system. Confirm what the Center expects of your organisation with counsel.
Is an Egyptian-accredited ISO/IEC 27701 certificate available?
Not on the listing, as far as the Global ACI page for the Egyptian Accreditation Council shows. That means the certificate may be backed by an accreditation from outside Egypt. Ask each certification body whose accreditation it holds for ISO/IEC 27701, and check whether the Center, your customer or your regulator will accept it.
Do I need ISO/IEC 27001 before ISO/IEC 27701?
The standard extends ISO/IEC 27001, so an existing certified information security system is the natural base and certification bodies commonly audit both together. Without it, you would build the security core and the privacy extension at the same time, which lengthens the project. Check which your customers actually require first.
How does ISO/IEC 27701 relate to the GDPR?
It is built to support GDPR-style controller and processor duties, which is why organisations working under the GDPR adopt it. The Ministry describes Egypt's Law as in line with international practice, especially the GDPR, though the Egyptian licence and permit system is distinct. Use the standard as a shared framework, then map Egyptian specifics.
