In short

ISO 17025 accreditation in Egypt at a glance

In Egypt, ISO/IEC 17025 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

A test report is only as useful as the trust placed in the laboratory behind it, and in Egypt that trust is formalised by the Egyptian Accreditation Council. Global ACI shows the Council recognised for testing and calibration under ISO/IEC 17025 from 2009, for medical testing under ISO 15189 and inspection under ISO/IEC 17020 from 2014, and for proficiency testing from 2019. The Egyptian Drug Authority licenses private laboratories in its field, the National Food Safety Authority maintains a laboratories department, and manufacturers run in-house testing for customers. Accreditation is a decision by the Council, not a certificate and not something Sterling grants. Sterling's Dubai office helps laboratories prepare method validation, uncertainty budgets, quality manuals, internal audits and proficiency testing plans before applying, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.

The need

Who needs ISO 17025 in Egypt, and what happens without it

In Egypt the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Testing laboratories serving industry, construction and foodCustomers and regulators accept results more readily when the laboratory is accredited for the method used.
  • Calibration laboratoriesCalibration certificates underpin every other lab and factory, and accreditation shows the measurement chain is sound.
  • Private laboratories in the pharmaceutical and medical device sectorThe Egyptian Drug Authority licenses private laboratories in its field and analyses products, so documented competence matters.
  • Food laboratories supporting NFSA-registered plantsNFSA's site lists a laboratories department, and plants rely on competent testing for verification.
  • Manufacturers running in-house testing for customersCustomers ask whether in-house results can be relied on without retesting.

Requirements

ISO 17025 requirements in Egypt

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 17025 requires a laboratory to prove six things about its competence and the results it reports.

You are impartialCommercial, financial or other pressures do not influence results, and risks to impartiality are identified and managed.
Staff are competent and authorisedEach person who performs, reviews or reports work is qualified, trained, monitored and authorised for those tasks.
Equipment is calibrated and traceableEquipment is fit for purpose and calibrated, with measurement results traceable to recognised references.
Methods are validated or verifiedMethods suit the work, are validated where needed or verified before use, and measurement uncertainty is evaluated.
Results are checked and reported properlyQuality control and proficiency testing confirm validity, and reports state results clearly, accurately and without ambiguity.
The management system worksComplaints, nonconforming work, risks, internal audits and management review run under a documented management system.

In Egypt these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 17025 explained →

Time

How long does ISO 17025 accreditation take in Egypt?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Egypt these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of methods and the range of the scope
  • State of method validation and uncertainty budgets
  • Proficiency testing participation to arrange
  • Accreditation body assessment scheduling

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 17025 accreditation cost in Egypt?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the accreditation body’s fees, which are quoted separately. In Egypt these factors move both.

  • Number of tests and calibrations in scope
  • Reference standards, equipment calibration and environmental control
  • Accreditation body application, assessment and annual fees, quoted separately
  • Staff training and competence records

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 17025 consultants and assessors in Egypt

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; the accreditation body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 17025 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Egypt are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 17025 in Egypt (3)

    InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Egyptian Accreditation Council (EGAC) recognition entriesAccreditation
Global ACI shows EGAC recognised for testing and calibration under ISO/IEC 17025 from 10 October 2009, for medical testing under ISO 15189 and inspection under ISO/IEC 17020 from 2 April 2014 and for proficiency testing from 13 June 2019.
Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA) — Law No. 151 of 2019Regulator context
The Authority states it licenses private laboratories in its field and examines and analyses pharmaceutical products, cosmetics and medical devices against mandatory standard specifications.
EOS testing laboratories and calibration servicesContext
EOS's menu lists testing laboratories and industrial calibrations among the services it provides; a laboratory's own accreditation is a separate matter assessed by EGAC.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Egypt

Laboratory competence is recognised by accreditation, not certification. The Egyptian Accreditation Council assesses a laboratory against ISO/IEC 17025 and accredits it for a defined scope, and Global ACI shows it recognised for testing and calibration from October 2009. Neither Sterling nor a certification body accredits laboratories. Apply to the accreditation body for the scope you need and read its published requirements, fee structure and application steps first. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 17025 hub →

    Audit language

Arabic is the official language and English is common in business; agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and say early if shop-floor interviews will run in Arabic.

    Remote and on-site

Assessments examine the laboratory, equipment and records on-site; document review, method validation files and preparation for witnessing can be handled remotely.

ISO 17025 in Egypt: questions clients ask

    Who accredits laboratories in Egypt?

The Egyptian Accreditation Council, which describes itself as the national body competent to accredit conformity assessment bodies including testing and calibration laboratories. Global ACI lists it as recognised for ISO/IEC 17025 testing and calibration from October 2009. Neither Sterling nor a certification body accredits laboratories. Apply to the Council for the scope you need.

What is the difference between ISO 9001 and ISO/IEC 17025 for a laboratory?

ISO 9001 certifies a quality management system, whereas ISO/IEC 17025 accredits technical competence for specific methods, including validity of results and measurement uncertainty. A laboratory can hold both, but only accreditation demonstrates that a given test result is technically reliable. Customers and regulators asking for accredited results mean the latter.

Do medical laboratories use ISO/IEC 17025?

Medical testing laboratories are accredited against ISO 15189, which Global ACI shows the Egyptian Accreditation Council recognised for from April 2014. ISO/IEC 17025 applies to testing and calibration laboratories. Which applies depends on the laboratory's work, so confirm the right standard with the Council before applying.

What slows down a first accreditation assessment?

Method validation and measurement uncertainty, which need real data and statistical work, plus participation in proficiency testing. Equipment calibration traceability and documented staff competence also take time. Start by listing the methods you want in scope and checking which have validation evidence already, since narrowing the scope can speed a first assessment.
