ISO 42001 certification in Brazil at a glance
In Brazil, ISO/IEC 42001 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
AI governance in Brazil is being shaped by supervision rather than by a certification rule. The Lei Geral de Proteção de Dados gives people the right to request review of decisions taken solely on automated processing of their personal data, and the Agência Nacional de Proteção de Dados reports a regulatory sandbox on artificial intelligence on its site. No text read for this page makes an AI management system certificate mandatory or names ISO/IEC 42001. The standard still helps software firms, lenders, health technology providers and public suppliers explain how their models are governed, tested and monitored. Certification comes from an accredited body whose scope for this standard needs checking. Sterling's New York office supports AI inventories, impact assessments, controls and internal audits, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.
Who needs ISO 42001 in Brazil, and what happens without it
In Brazil the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Software and data companies building AI productsCustomers ask how models are governed, tested and monitored.
- Banks, insurers and credit providers using automated decisionsThe LGPD gives people the right to ask for review of decisions made solely by automated processing.
- Health and education technology firmsSensitive data and vulnerable users raise governance expectations.
- Public-sector suppliers using AIBuyers increasingly ask for AI governance evidence.
- Multinationals deploying group AI tools in BrazilGroup governance has to cover local legal bases and rights.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 42001 requires a company to prove six things about how it governs the AI it builds or uses.
In Brazil these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 42001 explained →

The Sterling Promise: 100% on-time completion, 100% success, 8,100+ client engagements.Sterling does not certify. Certification decisions stay with independent bodies.
How long does ISO 42001 certification take in Brazil?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Brazil these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number of AI systems and their risk levels
- Maturity of data governance, testing and monitoring
- Supplier and model dependency
- Certification body availability
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 42001 certification cost in Brazil?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Brazil these factors move both.
- Number of AI systems and data sources in scope
- Monitoring, testing and documentation tooling
- Certification body audit fees, quoted separately from consulting
- Independent testing or review of high-risk systems
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 42001 consultants and certification bodies in Brazil
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 42001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Brazil are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.
Laws and regulations that drive ISO 42001 in Brazil (3)
| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|
| Lei Geral de Proteção de Dados Pessoais (Law No. 13,709 of 14 August 2018) | Related Gives data subjects the right to request review of decisions taken solely on automated processing of personal data; it does not name ISO/IEC 42001. |
| ANPD regulatory sandbox on artificial intelligence | Regulator context The ANPD's site reports a regulatory sandbox on AI and publishes monitoring reports; it does not make an AI management system certificate mandatory. |
| Agência Nacional de Proteção de Dados (ANPD) — Digital Statute of the Child and Adolescent | Related The ANPD publishes material on Law No. 15,211 of 2025, which applies to digital products and services likely to be accessed by children and adolescents. |
Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Brazil
Use a certification body accredited for ISO/IEC 42001 by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). Brazil's national accreditation body is the Coordenação-Geral de Acreditação (Cgcre) of Inmetro, a Global ACI Full Member, but scopes differ by standard, so ask each candidate for its accreditation certificate and check that it lists ISO/IEC 42001. The accredited certification body decides, not Sterling. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 42001 hub →
Audit language
Portuguese is the usual language of regulators, contracts and audit records, while English is common inside multinationals; agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.
Remote and on-site
AI governance audits review policies, impact assessments, testing and monitoring records, largely remote, with walkthroughs of the teams that build and operate the systems.
ISO 42001 in Brazil: questions clients ask
Is there a Brazilian law that requires ISO 42001?
None of the texts read here makes it mandatory. The LGPD already gives people the right to ask for review of decisions taken solely by automated processing, and the ANPD runs a regulatory sandbox on artificial intelligence. Whether a future AI law will refer to the standard is not something to assume. Follow the ANPD and legislative sources.
What does the ANPD do about artificial intelligence?
Its site reports a regulatory sandbox on artificial intelligence and publishes partial monitoring reports of that sandbox. It also lists AI and biometrics among themes in its regulatory agenda consultation. These are supervision and guidance activities. Read the ANPD's current publications for anything that binds your products.
Can ISO 42001 help with LGPD automated decision rights?
Indirectly. The standard requires AI system impact assessment, oversight, documentation and monitoring, which makes it easier to explain how an automated decision was reached and to arrange human review. It does not decide the legal basis or the rights process, so combine it with privacy work and ask counsel about particular decisions.
Which body certifies ISO 42001 in Brazil?
An accredited certification body, and the standard is new enough that you must check each candidate's accreditation scope. Cgcre is Brazil's accreditation body and a Global ACI Full Member, but its listing is not assumed to cover this standard. Request the accreditation certificate and ask how the body qualifies its AI auditors.
