In short

ISO 20000-1 certification in Brazil at a glance

One Brazilian instrument bears on ISO/IEC 20000-1. It does not name the standard. So why do buyers in Brazil keep asking for the certificate?

ISO 20000-1 has no Brazilian rule behind it, yet the idea it certifies appears all over the regulated market. Banco Central resolutions for financial institutions require incident records, continuity scenarios and due diligence on providers of processing and cloud services, and the LGPD adds incident and security duties for anyone holding personal data. A provider that can show a managed service lifecycle, change control and measured incident handling answers those questions faster. Certification comes from an accredited certification body, and each body's scope for this standard must be checked, since Cgcre, a Global ACI Full Member, accredits by scope. Sterling's New York office helps managed service providers, BPOs and internal IT groups document services, build processes and run internal audits, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.

The need

Who needs ISO 20000-1 in Brazil, and what happens without it

In Brazil the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • IT service providers and managed service firmsClients and regulators assess how services are run, changed and supported.
  • BPO and shared-service centresOverseas clients often add service management expectations to security ones.
  • SaaS and hosting providers selling to financial institutionsInstitutions must assess providers of processing and cloud services.
  • Internal IT departments of large Brazilian groupsThey run a service catalogue for the business and use the standard to structure it.
  • Telecommunications and digital infrastructure operatorsCustomer contracts specify service levels and incident handling.

Requirements

ISO 20000-1 requirements in Brazil

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 20000-1 requires a company to prove six things about how it plans and delivers IT services.

Services are defined and agreedA service catalogue and service-level agreements state what you deliver and to what standard.
Management owns the service systemTop management sets the service management policy and objectives and provides the people and tools to meet them.
Changes and releases are controlledChanges, releases and deployments are assessed, approved and tracked so live services stay stable.
Incidents and problems are resolvedIncidents and requests are handled to agreed targets, and recurring problems are traced back to their cause.
Capacity, continuity and security are plannedCapacity, availability, continuity and information security are planned so agreed service commitments can be met.
Suppliers and performance are reviewedSuppliers and internal teams are managed against agreements, performance is reported, and the system is audited and reviewed.

In Brazil these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO/IEC 20000-1 explained →

How Sterling gets a Brazilian company certified

How to get ISO 20000-1 certified in Brazil

One team from the New York office carries the work from scoping to certificate. Clients across Brazil are served from Sterling's New York office, on-site where the work needs it and remotely otherwise.

  1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.
  2. Gap assessment against ISO/IEC 20000-1 and the Brazilian requirements that apply to youControls you already run for your regulators and customers are reused, not rebuilt.
  3. Your system built with your team in EffivityRisks, controls, evidence, incidents and reviews in one live system the auditor can see.
  4. Internal audit, management review and corrective actionsYour internal auditors trained by Sterling; the evidence proven before the certification body arrives.
  5. Certification body stage 1 and stage 2, then surveillanceAn accredited body audits and decides. Sterling supports the audits and the three-year cycle.

Time

How long does ISO 20000-1 certification take in Brazil?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Brazil these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of services and customers in scope
  • Maturity of incident, change and configuration processes
  • Tooling and data quality for service records
  • Certification body availability

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 20000-1 certification cost in Brazil?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Brazil these factors move both.

  • Number of services, sites and staff in scope
  • Tooling for ticketing, configuration and reporting
  • Certification body audit fees, quoted separately from consulting
  • Supplier and customer agreement alignment

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 20000-1 consultants and certification bodies in Brazil

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 20000-1 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Brazil are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 20000-1 in Brazil (3)

    InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Resolução CMN nº 4.893 of 26 February 2021 and Resolução BCB nº 85 of 8 April 2021Expected in practice
The texts require institutions to record and analyse incidents, test continuity and assess providers of data processing and cloud services; they do not name ISO/IEC 20000-1.
Lei Geral de Proteção de Dados Pessoais (Law No. 13,709 of 14 August 2018)Related
Incident handling and security duties under the Law overlap with the incident and change processes of a service management system.
Cgcre (Inmetro) and its Global ACI recognitionContext
Cgcre is a Global ACI Full Member; check any certification body's accredited scope for ISO/IEC 20000-1 directly, as this page does not assume it.

"Expected in practice" means the instrument asks for the outcomes ISO/IEC 20000-1 covers without naming a standard, and ISO/IEC 20000-1 is what buyers and regulators commonly accept as evidence of them.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Brazil

Use a certification body accredited for ISO/IEC 20000-1 by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). Brazil's national accreditation body is the Coordenação-Geral de Acreditação (Cgcre) of Inmetro, a Global ACI Full Member, but a body's scope varies by standard, so ask each candidate for its accreditation certificate and check that it lists ISO/IEC 20000-1. The accredited certification body decides, not Sterling. Edition and transition details: ISO/IEC 20000-1 hub →

    Audit language

Portuguese is the usual language of regulators, contracts and audit records, while English is common inside multinationals; agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.

    Remote and on-site

Service management audits combine document and process review, often remote, with visits to service desks, operations centres and data centres.

ISO 20000-1 in Brazil: questions clients ask

Is ISO 20000-1 required by Brazilian regulators?

No Brazilian rule among those read here names it. Banco Central resolutions require incident analysis, continuity testing and checks on providers of data processing and cloud services, so institutions and their providers value a disciplined service process. Whether ISO 20000-1 is the evidence you present is a commercial choice. Ask the customer what it will accept.

Who benefits most from ISO 20000-1 in Brazil?

Providers whose customers depend on measured service levels: managed service firms, BPO and shared-service centres, hosting and SaaS suppliers and large internal IT groups. It makes the service catalogue, incident and change handling auditable. Firms that only develop software, with no operated service, may find ISO 9001 or ISO 27001 more relevant.

Can ISO 20000-1 be combined with ISO 27001?

Yes. The two share a management system structure, and incident, change, supplier and continuity processes appear in both. A combined programme can use one internal audit cycle and one management review. The certificates are separate, and the certification body should confirm in advance how it will plan the audits and whether it holds accreditation for both.

Does Cgcre accredit bodies for ISO 20000-1?

Cgcre is Brazil's accreditation body, and Global ACI lists it as a Full Member, but a certification body's scope must be checked standard by standard. Ask any candidate for its accreditation certificate and read whether ISO/IEC 20000-1 is listed. Inmetro advises verifying scopes in its databases because they can be cancelled.
