In short

AS9100 certification in Brazil at a glance

One Brazilian instrument bears on AS9100. It does not name the standard. So why do buyers in Brazil keep asking for the certificate?

Aerospace supply chains reward suppliers that can show a recognised quality system, and in Brazil that demand arrives through customers and prime contractors rather than through statute. The International Aerospace Quality Group owns the 9100 series, which separates design and production, maintenance and distribution. Global ACI lists IAQG 9100, 9110 and 9120 among the scopes recognised for Cgcre, Inmetro's accreditation coordination, so a Brazilian certification body can be accredited for the scheme. For machining shops, composites suppliers, repair stations and distributors, the work lies in configuration control, special processes, traceability and risk management layered on top of ISO 9001, with customers auditing the result in their own way. Sterling's New York office supports gap analysis, procedures, supplier flow-down and internal audits, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.

The need

Who needs AS9100 in Brazil, and what happens without it

In Brazil the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Machining, casting and composites suppliers to aerospace manufacturersPrime contractors flow the IAQG 9100 requirements down to their supply chain.
  • Maintenance, repair and overhaul businessesThe IAQG family includes 9110 for maintenance organisations, and customers set their own approval rules.
  • Distributors and stockholders of aerospace partsThe IAQG family includes 9120 for distributors, with traceability expectations from buyers.
  • Defence and space suppliersProgramme customers set quality system requirements through contract terms.
  • Manufacturers moving into aerospace from automotive or industrial workThey need a recognised aerospace quality system before approved supplier lists open.

AS9100 requirements in Brazil

Strip away the vocabulary and AS9100 asks a supplier to prove six things about delivering aerospace products safely and on time.

Product safety is managedRisks to product safety are identified and controlled throughout the product's life, from design to delivery.
Configuration is under controlThe approved configuration of each product is identified, changes are controlled and records match what was delivered.
Counterfeit parts are kept outPurchasing, inspection and supplier controls stop counterfeit or suspect parts from entering the product.
Operational risks are managedRisks to delivery and product conformity are assessed and controlled during planning and production.
Production is proven before it runsProduction process verification, such as first article inspection, confirms that processes can make conforming product.
Delivery and conformity are measuredOn-time delivery and product conformity are measured, and human factors are considered when nonconformities are investigated.

In Brazil these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: AS9100 explained →

How Sterling gets a Brazilian company certified

How to get AS9100 certified in Brazil

One team from the New York office carries the work from scoping to certificate. Clients across Brazil are served from Sterling's New York office, on-site where the work needs it and remotely otherwise.

    1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.
    2. Gap assessment against AS9100 and the Brazilian requirements that apply to youControls you already run for your regulators and customers are reused, not rebuilt.
    3. Your system built with your team in EffivityRisks, controls, evidence, incidents and reviews in one live system the auditor can see.
    4. Internal audit, management review and corrective actionsYour internal auditors trained by Sterling; the evidence proven before the certification body arrives.
    5. Certification body stage 1 and stage 2, then surveillanceAn accredited body audits and decides. Sterling supports the audits and the three-year cycle.

The Sterling Promise: 100% on-time completion, 100% success, 8,100+ client engagements.Sterling does not certify. Certification decisions stay with independent bodies.

      Time

How long does AS9100 certification take in Brazil?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Brazil these are the factors that set the timeline.

      • Scope across production, maintenance or distribution
      • Maturity of configuration, risk and special-process controls
      • Customer-specific approvals already held
      • Certification body auditor availability

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

      Cost

How much does AS9100 certification cost in Brazil?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Brazil these factors move both.

      • Number of sites and processes in scope
      • Special-process, inspection and traceability improvements
      • Certification body audit fees, quoted separately from consulting
      • Customer approval and first-article support

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

        Choosing a partner

AS9100 consultants and certification bodies in Brazil

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

        • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers AS9100 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
        • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Brazil are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
        • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
        • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive AS9100 in Brazil (3)

          InstrumentHow it treats the standard
Cgcre (Inmetro) and its Global ACI recognitionMarket driver
Global ACI records IAQG 9100, 9110 and 9120 among the management systems scopes recognised for Cgcre, with IAQG 9104-1 as supporting criteria; a Brazilian body can therefore be accredited for the aerospace scheme.
International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG) — scheme ownerScheme rule
The IAQG sets the 9100 series and its certification rules; aerospace customers, rather than Brazilian statute, make certification a supplier condition.
Law No. 14,133 of 2021 (public tenders)Does not name the standard
Public purchasers set technical qualification in each notice.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Brazil

Use a certification body accredited for AS9100 by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). Brazil's national accreditation body is the Coordenação-Geral de Acreditação (Cgcre) of Inmetro, which Global ACI lists as a Full Member and MRA signatory. Global ACI's entry for Cgcre lists IAQG 9100, 9110 and 9120 among its recognised scopes. Ask each body for its accreditation certificate and check that the scope covers the standard and your sector. The accredited certification body decides, not Sterling. Edition and transition details: AS9100 hub →

          Audit language

Portuguese is the usual language of regulators, contracts and audit records, while English is common inside multinationals; agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.

          Remote and on-site

Aerospace audits are performed on site to inspect production, special processes, inspection and traceability records; remote elements depend on scheme rules.

AS9100 in Brazil: questions clients ask

Is AS9100 required by Brazilian law?

No statute requires it. The demand comes from aerospace customers and prime contractors, which make the IAQG 9100 series a condition of supplying. The question for a Brazilian shop is therefore which customers' approved supplier lists you want to reach and what those lists ask for. Ask the customer's supplier quality contact for the exact standard and edition.

Can a Brazilian certification body issue AS9100 certificates?

Global ACI lists IAQG 9100, 9110 and 9120 among the scopes recognised for Cgcre, so a Brazilian certification body can be accredited for the aerospace scheme, subject to the scheme's own rules. Compare it with foreign bodies on auditor experience in your process type, and ask whether its scope names the series you need.

What do 9110 and 9120 cover compared with 9100?

The IAQG series splits by activity: 9100 for design and production organisations, 9110 for maintenance organisations and 9120 for distributors. All three are recognised scopes in Global ACI's listing for Cgcre. Choose by what your company does, and ask the certification body to confirm which standard its aerospace customers expect for your activity.

Does an automotive supplier have a head start on AS9100?

Partly. Both build on ISO 9001 and use risk and process-control tools, so a mature automotive system is a useful base. Aerospace adds configuration management, special-process control, first-article inspection and counterfeit-part prevention, and customers audit differently. Plan for a gap review against the aerospace requirements before committing to a certification date.
