ISO 45001 certification in Austria at a glance

ArbeitnehmerInnenschutzgesetz (ASchG), BGBl. Nr. 450/1994 is the instrument itself: it applies to the organisations within its scope, and buyers and partners in Austria ask for evidence that you meet it.

Austria's workplace safety statute is the ArbeitnehmerInnenschutzgesetz, and it does not mention ISO 45001. What it does contain is the duty to identify and assess hazards and fix protective measures, the Arbeitsplatzevaluierung, which an ISO 45001 system turns into a running management process with objectives, change control, audits and review. Certification is voluntary and comes from a body accredited for the standard by Akkreditierung Austria or an equivalent accreditation body, never from Sterling. Demand comes mainly from industrial and public clients that prequalify contractors, and from groups that run quality, environment and safety systems together. Sterling's Frankfurt office builds the hazard register, controls, training records and internal audit, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement. Austrian-specific questions are answered below.

The need

Who needs ISO 45001 in Austria, and what happens without it

In Austria the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Employers carrying out the Arbeitsplatzevaluierung under the ASchGThe statutory duty to identify and assess hazards and fix measures is the backbone an ISO 45001 system organises and keeps current.
  • Manufacturers, construction and logistics firms with high-risk workThese businesses face labour-inspectorate attention and customer prequalification that ask for visible safety management.
  • Contractors to large industrial and public clientsClients often ask contractors to show independently certified safety management before site access, although each tender sets its own criteria.
  • Groups combining quality, environment and safety systemsMany Austrian groups run integrated systems and add ISO 45001 beside ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.

Requirements

ISO 45001 requirements in Austria

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 45001 requires a company to prove six things about keeping its people safe and healthy at work.

Leadership takes responsibility for safetyTop management is accountable for preventing work-related injury and ill health, and sets a policy and objectives to do so.
Workers have a real sayWorkers and their representatives are consulted and take part in decisions on hazards, controls, incidents and the system itself.
You know the hazards and the risksHazards are identified on an ongoing basis, risks are assessed, and health and safety legal requirements are known and met.
Controls follow the right orderRisks are reduced using the hierarchy of controls, from eliminating the hazard down to protective equipment, including for contractors.
You are prepared for emergenciesEmergency situations are identified, response plans are in place, people are trained and drills are carried out.
Incidents lead to learningIncidents and nonconformities are investigated, causes are corrected, and performance is monitored, audited and reviewed.

In Austria these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 45001 explained →

Time

How long does ISO 45001 certification take in Austria?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Austria these are the factors that set the timeline.

  • Number of sites, shifts and high-risk activities
  • State of the hazard assessments and incident records
  • Contractor and temporary-worker controls
  • Certification body scheduling around Austrian holiday periods

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

Cost

How much does ISO 45001 certification cost in Austria?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Austria these factors move both.

  • Scope, headcount and number of sites
  • Remediation of hazard controls and training records
  • Certification body audit fees, quoted separately from consulting
  • Integration with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

Choosing a partner

ISO 45001 consultants and certification bodies in Austria

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

  • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 45001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
  • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Austria are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
  • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
  • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive ISO 45001 in Austria (4)

InstrumentHow it treats the standard
ArbeitnehmerInnenschutzgesetz (ASchG), BGBl. Nr. 450/1994The instrument itself
It is the Austrian act on safety and health at work and contains the duty to identify and assess hazards in an Arbeitsplatzevaluierung; it does not name ISO 45001.
Akkreditierung Austria as the Austrian national accreditation bodyRegulator page
The Federal Minister for Economy set up Akkreditierung Austria as a department of the ministry; it accredits conformity assessment bodies established in Austria.
EA directory entry for Akkreditierung AustriaRecognition
EA lists Akkreditierung Austria as an MLA signatory with scopes that include management system certification, product certification, certification of persons, inspection, calibration, testing and validation and verification.
Austrian Standards as the national standards organisationScheme rule
Austrian Standards describes itself as the Austrian organisation for standardization and innovation, so it is named here only in its standards role.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Austria

Choose a certification body accredited for this standard by Akkreditierung Austria, Austria's national accreditation body, or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). Check that the body's accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here. Edition and transition details: ISO 45001 hub →

Audit language

German is the official language of Austria and English is common in international groups and technology firms. Agree the audit language and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application, and follow any language requirement in a contract or a regulator's procedure.

Remote and on-site

Audits are normally on-site because they examine workplaces, contractors and incident records; remote sampling is at the certification body's discretion.

ISO 45001 in Austria: questions clients ask

Does Austrian law require ISO 45001?

No. The ArbeitnehmerInnenschutzgesetz is the statutory framework and does not name ISO 45001. It contains the duty to identify and assess hazards and fix protective measures, called the Arbeitsplatzevaluierung. ISO 45001 is a voluntary management system that can organise that duty. Confirm your own legal obligations with the labour inspectorate or your counsel.

How does ISO 45001 relate to the Arbeitsplatzevaluierung?

The statutory evaluation is the legal minimum, while ISO 45001 wraps it in a management system with policy, objectives, change control, audits and management review. An existing evaluation is a useful input, but the standard requires more than documents. The Act itself does not mention the standard, so keep the legal duties and the certificate distinct.

Who certifies ISO 45001 in Austria?

An accredited certification body, never Sterling. Choose one accredited for ISO 45001 by Akkreditierung Austria or an equivalent body within the international recognition arrangements, and read the accreditation scope. EA lists Akkreditierung Austria as an MLA signatory with a management system certification scope. Sterling prepares the system and the internal audit.

Which Austrian buyers ask for ISO 45001 certificates?

Mostly industrial and public clients that prequalify contractors, though no statute demands it. Requirements appear in tender documents and supplier questionnaires, and under the Bundesvergabegesetz 2018 each tender sets its own criteria. Ask the client which certificates it accepts and whether equivalent evidence will do, then confirm any legal point with your counsel.
