RBA Code of Conduct · Responsible Business Alliance

RBA Code of Conduct compliance for suppliers in electronics and the supply chains around it.

The Responsible Business Alliance publishes a Code of Conduct that its members apply to their own operations and expect their suppliers to meet, and it runs its own audit programme. Sterling's expert and experienced consultants help your sites meet the Code in practice and get ready for an RBA audit. We help our clients put it into practice and prove it.

  • Fixed scope, one proposal: consulting, Effivity software, Sterling Academy access and internal auditor training, as applicable to your standard, in one proposal
  • Expert and experienced consultants in labour, safety, environment and management systems, working across sectors since 2003
  • The Sterling Promise: 100% on-time completion, 100% success, 8,100+ client engagements. Sterling does not audit; audits run under the RBA's own programme

8,100+ client engagements in 60+ countries.

What it is

What is the RBA Code of Conduct?

The RBA Code of Conduct is published by the Responsible Business Alliance. It sets expectations for how workers are treated, how workplaces are kept safe, how environmental impacts are managed and how business is conducted ethically, backed by a management system to keep it working.

Companies that adopt the Code usually apply it to their own sites and ask their suppliers to meet it. The RBA also publishes an audit standard and a practical guide to responsible business conduct due diligence, so suppliers can see how conformance is checked.

Current version. The RBA Code of Conduct is at version 8.0, dated 2025, and the RBA's VAP audit standard is at version 8.0.2, dated April 2025. Your customer may name a specific version, so confirm it before the gap assessment starts.

Who it is for

Who needs to meet the RBA Code of Conduct?

The Code reaches most suppliers through a customer's contract. Sterling's clients usually arrive from one of four directions:

  • An electronics customer has sent the Code. It arrives with a supplier agreement or a self-assessment request. Confirm which version and which sites are in scope.
  • An RBA audit has been requested. The customer wants an audit under RBA's programme by a set date, and the site needs to be ready well before.
  • An audit raised findings. Findings on working hours, recruitment fees, safety or environmental permits need corrective action with evidence.
  • You are joining the RBA or a member's supply base. Leadership wants one management system that meets the Code across every site.

The Code is tested on the shop floor and in worker interviews, not in the policy manual. Preparation has to reach both.

Requirements

What does the RBA Code of Conduct require?

The Code itself, version 8.0, sets the requirements and is available from the RBA; its section structure is not reproduced here. The list below is what Sterling's preparation work covers.

  • Labour: freely chosen employment, recruitment fees, working hours, wages, and fair treatment, with records to show it.
  • Health and safety: hazard control, emergency preparedness, incident handling and worker training.
  • Environment: permits, emissions, waste and chemical management applicable to your site.
  • Ethics: integrity, anti-bribery, privacy and protection for people who raise concerns.
  • Management system: commitment, risk assessment, objectives, training, supplier oversight, audits and corrective action.

What does convincing RBA evidence look like?

Recruitment records showing no fees charged to workers, hours and pay that reconcile, safety and environmental permits in date, a risk assessment that drives action, and supplier expectations passed on in writing. We help your team build this and keep it in Effivity.

How Sterling implements ISO and GRC standards

Effivity · ISO and GRC software, included in every engagement

How Effivity helps you meet, track and sustain the RBA Code of Conduct.

Every Sterling RBA Code engagement includes Effivity, the ISO and GRC automation platform built by the Sterling group and used in 50+ countries. Your consultant configures the workspace within the agreed scope, so risk assessments, labour indicators, permits, incidents, supplier evaluations, training, audits and corrective actions live in one place and the auditor reviews a live system rather than a binder. Sterling consulting clients get their Effivity subscription included with the engagement, at no additional cost.

What this means at the audit

The auditor asks for recruitment and payroll records, the risk assessment, permits, the incident log and supplier follow-up, then interviews workers. In Effivity each is a screen with dates, owners and evidence attached. After the audit, Sustain™ runs in the same workspace, so the next audit finds a system that kept running.

The Sterling Promise

What our RBA Code readiness guarantee means

100%on-time completion · success · 8,100+ client engagements

We stay with you until your agreed RBA Code outcome is achieved, supporting implementation, audit preparation and the closure of findings. Included software and employee learning turn the work into lasting capability.

The engagement identifies the Code version, sites, outcome and responsibilities. Your organisation supplies accurate information and puts the agreed practices into use. Audits run under the RBA's programme and their outcomes rest with it. Our commitment concerns the agreed support, not a promise of every future contract or of an audit with no findings.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about the RBA Code of Conduct

Is the RBA Code of Conduct a certification?

No. The RBA Code of Conduct is a code that members and their suppliers commit to, checked through audits under the RBA's assessment programme; it is not an ISO-style certification. Ask your customer what outcome they need.

Where can we get the RBA Code of Conduct?

The RBA publishes the Code on its own website, with translations such as a French (Canadian) version. Work from the RBA's copy of the version your customer names.

Which RBA Code version applies to us?

The current Code is version 8.0 (2025), but the version that applies is the one your customer or audit request names. Check the request before planning.
