What it is

What is amfori BSCI?

amfori BSCI, the Business Social Compliance Initiative, is amfori's programme for monitoring and improving social performance in global supply chains. Companies that source from factories, farms and workshops use it to understand working conditions at their producers and to push for improvement over time.

amfori publishes the programme documents itself, including the amfori BSCI System Manual 2023 and its Part 1, which sets out the amfori BSCI due diligence approach. Producers are assessed across 13 performance areas, the results are rated under amfori's audit rating guide, and amfori's Guide 6 explains how a producer prepares for monitoring.

Current documents. amfori's site offers an updated version of the amfori BSCI System Manual for download. Confirm with the buyer that requested the audit which documents and audit type apply to your site before preparation starts.

Who it is for

Who asks for an amfori BSCI audit?

The request nearly always comes from a buyer, not a regulator. Producers usually contact Sterling at one of three moments:

  • A buyer has asked for your first audit. You need to understand the performance areas, fix the obvious gaps and brief your managers before the auditor arrives.
  • A previous rating needs to improve. Findings keep returning, and a follow-up visit is due.
  • Several buyers audit the same site. You want one set of social compliance records that serves every programme you are monitored under.

The aim is working conditions that hold up every day, not only on audit day.

Requirements

What does an amfori BSCI audit look at?

amfori groups its expectations of producers into 13 performance areas. The area titles were not confirmed from an amfori source for this page, so the list below shows what Sterling's preparation work covers instead.

  • Site gap assessment: each production site reviewed against the amfori BSCI performance areas before the audit
  • Management and responsibilities: who owns social compliance on site, and how it is reviewed
  • Workers' voice: worker involvement, communication and grievance channels that people actually use
  • Hours, wages and records: working time, pay and personnel records checked for consistency
  • Health and safety: workplace risks, controls and the evidence that they work
  • Remediation: corrective action plans with owners and dates, closed before the next visit

What does useful amfori BSCI evidence look like?

Time and attendance records that match payroll, signed employment documents, a grievance log with responses, safety inspection and training records, and minutes showing management reviewed the findings. We help you keep these as working records, not as a file built for one visit.

Your engagement

What your amfori BSCI engagement includes

Your agreed scope covers every site the buyer has named, from the first gap assessment to follow-up after the audit. The amfori BSCI audit itself is carried out by an independent auditing company within amfori's system; Sterling does not audit or rate your site.

  • Scope, gap assessment and remediation plan

Site by site, with owners, dates and decision makers agreed before work starts.

  • Policies, procedures and records

Written with your managers, in the language your workers read.

  • Effivity ISO & GRC software

Findings, actions and records in one workspace, included with the engagement at no additional cost.

  • Training for everyone

Briefings for managers and supervisors, and preferential Sterling Academy access, including complimentary awareness training for your people as part of the engagement.

  • Internal review

A pre-audit walk-through and worker interviews, with gaps closed before the auditor arrives.

  • Audit readiness and follow-up

Preparation for the audit and support with the corrective action plan afterwards.

Audit findings and ratings remain with the independent auditing company and amfori's system.

How Sterling implements ISO and GRC standards

Effivity · ISO and GRC software, included in every engagement

How Effivity helps you fulfil, automate and simplify amfori BSCI social compliance work.

Every Sterling amfori BSCI engagement includes Effivity, the ISO and GRC automation platform built by the Sterling group and used in 50+ countries. Your consultant configures the workspace within the agreed scope, so documents, risks, audits, nonconformities, complaints, supplier evaluations, training records and management review live in one place, the system runs in daily work and the auditor reviews a live system rather than a binder. Sterling consulting clients get their Effivity subscription included with the engagement, at no additional cost.

Effivity QMS: Context of the Organisation dashboard with issues, interested parties and scope
Effivity QMS · Context of the Organisation dashboard
Context

Context, scope and interested parties

The scope statement, the internal and external issues and the interested parties are kept in one register and reviewed on a schedule, so the context stays current as the business changes instead of being rewritten before each audit.

Leadership

Quality policy, roles and objectives

The policy, the responsibilities and the quality objectives with their measures, owners and dates live where the people who own them work; progress is reported from the system, not from a separate spreadsheet.

Planning

Risks and opportunities

A risk and opportunity register with owners, actions and review dates; treatments tracked to closure and brought to management review automatically.

Support

Competence, awareness and documented information

Training and competence records for every person, linked to Sterling Academy; documents with versions, approvals and distribution, so the current version is the only one in use.

Operation

Customer requirements, design, suppliers and delivery

Requirement reviews, design controls where they apply, supplier evaluation, production or service delivery, inspection, release, calibration and maintenance, each with its record created as the work is done.

Performance evaluation

Monitoring, internal audit and management review

Audit programmes, findings and follow-up; customer satisfaction and KPIs on live dashboards; a management review that records its inputs, decisions and actions.

Improvement

Nonconformity, complaints and corrective action

Raised, investigated and closed with root cause and the evidence that the action worked; recurring issues visible to management before they become a finding.

Across the system

Your own processes, forms and reports

Forms, fields, workflows and reports adapted to how you work, without code; legal and customer requirements tracked to the processes they affect.

What this means on audit day

The auditor asks for working-time records, wage evidence, the grievance log, safety checks and the corrective actions from the last visit. In Effivity each of those is a screen, with dates, owners and evidence attached, not a folder assembled the night before. Between audits, Sustain™ keeps the same workspace running.

In your engagement

  • Subscription included with the engagement, at no additional cost
  • Configured by your Sterling consultant within the agreed scope
  • Your documents, records and registers migrated, not retyped
  • Admin and user training for your team
  • Modules for EMS, OHSMS, ISMS, FSMS and more when you integrate other standards

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about amfori BSCI

Is amfori BSCI a certification?

The outcome of an amfori BSCI audit is a rating, which amfori explains in its audit rating guide. Ask the buyer that requested the audit how it will review the result and when a follow-up is expected.

How do we prepare for an amfori BSCI audit?

Start with a real gap assessment of each site against the amfori BSCI performance areas. Then fix the records and practices that fall short, brief managers and workers, and walk through the site as an auditor would before the visit.

Is amfori BSCI the same as SA8000?

No. They are separate programmes with different owners: SA8000 is a certifiable standard, while amfori BSCI is amfori's monitoring programme for buyers' supply chains. Where their requirements overlap, one set of well-kept records can support both.
